Fairfax City police on Tuesday arrested and charged the owner of an auto customization shop with defrauding a customer out of thousands of dollars.

Thomas Lloyd, 54, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., faces one count of obtaining money by false pretense, the police said. Lloyd owns Bubbas East Coast Rods & Customs at 3180 Draper Drive, off Fairfax Boulevard (Route 50) a few blocks west of Fairfax Circle.

The police arrested Lloyd after an investigation "into events that began on July 5, 2013," they said in a statement. The alleged victim told police he paid $55,000 for services on a vehicle that were never performed.

The police said they served Lloyd with the arrest warrant Tuesday at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. Bond was set at $5,000.

Police detectives are trying to learn if any other person experienced a similar situation at Bubbas East Coast Rods & Customs. Contact the police department at (703) 385-7924 with any information.

This was about a 1967 Pontiac GTO that a customer wanted to get restored, but Bubba took the money and ran. Somehow he "lost" the chassis to the car. This story was on TV a few months ago - Bubba said he was going to make it right.

As a general rule, I avoid doing business with anyone named "Bubba"...

Especially if they have a history of lubricating their cigars on the interns.

Too bad. We really need a good honest hot rod shop in NOVA. I checked out Bubba's and was not comfortable leaving my car... wrong vibe and I'm glad I went with my instincts. Sterling hot rods is more legit but the price is high, time to complete work slow and they use the cheapest paint made. Come on guys,,, you can't really be in this business and screw around and expect others to recommend your shop. There is money to be made for the honest shop... screwing people over lands you in jail or out of business... being honest and doing what you say lands you profit!! Get it? Not hard to figure out.

These investigations may lead to nothing conclusive other than some eager overselling by Tom and the unrealistic expectations for customers that are impossible to please thinking that Old cars can be exhumed and magically become Factory Fresh turn key after forty years.

The authorities most likely will discover no fraud or criminal activity was the case here with Tom and Bub. Unhappy customers will have to pursue civil cases to recoup any monetary loses or just let it go and put it behind them.

Bottom line is that Bubba and Tom will continue to Prosper at their Hot Rod Shops in both Lucrative Jupiter and with their daughter/sister here at the Fairfax Shop.

Tom and Bub will go on to their Reality TV Careers which seems to be taking off right now.

Sometimes bad people get jealous and green with envy of other folks successes and just cannot see and accept their good deeds and hard work rewarded.

I take both of my cars(69 velle and 70 charger) to Hardcore Hotrods in Sterling since 2012 since I got burned by Bubba. They are a serious shop and fair pricing. Awesome group of seasoned techs. They have some questionable and weird reviews online that seem fake and not by actual customers . I personally visited their shop before I cut them lose on my cars and I am very pleased to say the least. I've developed a great relationship with them. The owner is a vet I might ad.

As of now I'm having Hardcore Hotrods do all my work. They painted my Cuda last year and hey did a fantastic job. A little more than what I wanted to pay but it turned out awesome. I can only things good things about them. Most of their staff is prior military including the boss. Night and day between Blubba's house of rip-off and Hardcore. Truth is there are not many qualified shops in the area so be careful where you spend your money. Bubba's taught me a huge lesson.

I feel for the poor woman that got taken by Tom. I'm wondering how many more people will start coming out of the wood work and go after them......

I have heard some stories about crappy work at Bubba's.

Subpar work and high prices. Not really much of a good balance.

Cameras make things look easy, lots of editing can make it appear someone can do major work overnight, it does not work this way. Very labor intensive and difficult to perform restoration type of work.

Very easy to add some bling and wheels to a newer model vehicle.

Very different activities.

Leave the kid out of this - From what I could see Tom not Bub was the one inflating the repair prices and taking the big deposits for his luxury cars and Motorcycles. Bubba just labored away in good faith always putting forth his best effort on the repairs and restorations because this is his calling and what he loved to do. Tom even went so far to blame me for their questionable actions and then they fired me all together as the scapegoat. Whatever the case it looks like they reestablished themselves with some success down there in Jupiter Florida making friends with Ted Vernon and Bucky Dent and no doubt want to leave all these bad stories behind them here in Fairfax.

Let's see what Tom and Bubba will post next as Mot Sabbub or MotBubs. They have really dug themselves in deep this time and their only hope is that all this awful situation and illegal activities here in Fairfax will not trickle down to their unsuspecting customers in Jupiter Florida. We shall see if they can somehow survive and limp along down there. I would appear their Business is headed off a cliff and down the toilet.

What I never understood was how the Fairfax Circle shop had no or limited secure area for the customer cars. I would cruise by every now and then and see all sorts of interesting stuff just parked out in the open that I would be surprised if nobody harvested parts from.

I truly appreciate what Rob, has done for me. The only worked accomplished on the car while at Bubba's was done by Rob. When he left, my car sat for months and they asked me for additional $$. I gave them a small amount. After nothing was done for over three months, I put in a dispute with the CC company. I then retrieved my car my car and pushed it to Rob's. He has done more in one month than they did in four. He communicates with his customers. He is awesome. Any one hurt by Bubba's may want to think about contacting Rob at the number in his post (703-489-1088) if they want their car restored, upgraded, or just running again.

Fast forward to 14.25. Bubba says: People are Going Down, You have been Warned"!

They have an explanation for everything! It is all just Gossip and lies and trash talking! The Rumors were started by Haters that want to make Them look Bad! They Claim only one out of fifty customers have been upset! Focus on the Cars as that is the only thing that matters. No crimes were committed!

NO!

If Tom and Bubs are actually spending any time on FFU, they clearly need to move on.

They have bailed out to FL for many reasons, partially because in the Fairfax/DC area the weather, roads and traffic is so crappy at times many people do not have many decent cars.

Also although there can be "stupid" money here in the area, the folks with stupid money are not typically car people. They spend their "stupid" money on art, wine, houses and other things.

Just be glad these guys have moved on. They will be legends in their own minds. Reality TV likes the family dynamics, good or bad, just look at all the other shows. Without dysfunctional families there will be no interest in these programs.

Tom is just doing everything he can to brag, extort the truth and get Bubs name out there. It would be interest to see how many hours Tom or Bubs actually are hands on with vehicles. They seem more like "personalities" and a lot less like any hard core restoration folks. Restorations take a LOT of time and it is REALLY hard to make any money do Restorations.

The sponsors, shows, PR events, photo Ops and radio shows is what these guys are really about.

Someone has to be back at the shop dealing with rust, cutting and welding and banging on dents.

Question remains if "Law Enforcement" has anything tangible that may really be an illegal activity and most importantly lead to any kind of conviction by their Fairfax Shop or more likely just a "He Said She Said" and let it go at that. No smoking gun especially the way Robin cooked the books with all her creative accounting. Good luck with that and perhaps to just let it go now that they have been finally evicted here in Fairfax. These guys are award winning Builders and they had a pretty good run here in Fairfax with a whole lot of ups and downs until they were overcome by too many mistakes and perhaps some border line illegal activities.

Remarkably they survived long enough to transplant their whole Hot Rod and Custom Operations down in Lucrative Jupiter Florida and are now busy like gang busters. Looks like they have ultimately found their niche in the Sunshine State and continue with their Reality TV Shows, radio shows and rubbing elbows with the VIP and celebrities down there in the VIP Lounge. A COURT OF LAW (Fairfax Criminal Court) RECENTLY FOUND TOM LLOYD OF BUBBAS GUILTY OF TAKING MONEY FROM CLIENTS YET NEVER INTENDING TO REPAIR THEIR CARS. The charges are all for "obtaining money under false pretense". FIVE SEPARATE CHARGES, GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS.
These won't be the last, just the tip of the iceberg for criminal charges, civil charges likely to follow soon.
