One of the richest cities in the country? Bwahahahaha! According to Census Quick Facts, all of the following have a higher median household income than Falls Church City...

Ashburn, Brambleton, Cascades, Dranesville, Dunn Loring, Fairfax Station, Floris, Fort Hunt, Franklin Farms, Gainesville, Great Falls, Kings Park West, Kingstowne, Lake Barcroft, Linton Hall, Lowes Island, Mantua, McLean, Montclair, Mount Vernon, Newington, Oakton, Purcellville, South Riding, Vienna, and Wolf Trap.

Clearly a joke. Falls Church is a dump. There's nothing there. Who would want to live there when Ballston, Tysons, Merrifield, Idylwood, McLean, Vienna, and Oakton are all just around the corner? So are 7 Corners, Culmore, and Bailey's of course. Yuck on that part!

Schools, nice homes, community activities and gatherings, walkable city, two Metro stations steps outside the city limits, highly educated and successful residents, parks and recreation activities, the list goes on... You just can't afford it.

Many people do as evidenced by the housing prices and days on the market of listings week after week for years now.

LOL, Falls Church is horrible. Well, unless you like listening to highway noise all day, breathing in exhaust fumes non-stop, being surrounded by concrete, and sitting in traffic (or worse, taking the metro -- LOL).

What highway noise would you hear? The highest speed limit is 30 MPH in the city of Falls Church.

Surrounded by concrete? It's the oldest "tree city" in Virginia and maintains that status today.

More than 80% white in the City of Falls Church. Care to guess what it is in Fairfax? 62%. Town of Vienna? 76%

Given that you're the loser who lives there, I'd expect you to be familiar with the nearby roadways such as 7, 29, and nearby 66. The fact that the speed limit through the city itself is lowered is really meaningless in terms of noise - the constant traffic on those roads equates to constant noise. And the sound from major highways like 66 easily propagates for a mile or more (depending on terrain).

LOL. Falls Church is a perfect example of how trees don't necessarily equate to not being surrounded by concrete.

Sorry I offended you though! :-) It's not your fault you're a born loser living in a noisy town full of other losers. I bet you even cram into the metro every day to get to some horrible government job in DC. LOL.

More than familiar with them which is why I question if you've ever been there.

Wrong. Noise is affected significantly by vehicle speeds, since sound energy roughly doubles for each increment of ten miles an hour in vehicle velocity.

Depending on terrain? You mean like having a bunch of trees around to block the sound of noise. You're batting .000.

"Suss" as a noun -- perhaps a usage that you are unfamiliar with -- is a period of quandary-induced pecking and rummaging about in hopes of discovering an avenue of escape from the latest bout with cognitive dissonance or other such perplexing mental state. Should you ever find such an avenue, you can claim to have sussed your problem out.

> You see, your idiotic contention holds as much

LOL! You all are poor! Falls Church City has one of the lower median household incomes in the area. Throw a dart at a map of Northern Virginia and the odds are quite good that you'll hit a place with a higher one.

> Clearly people who pay those prices can live just about

And they please to live elsewhere in HUGE numbers. Falls Church is a decaying dump. It's a lump of coal in your Christmas stocking. Never mind living there, no one even GOES there for anything unless they somehow have to.

Right. Things sure are tough outside the Beltway. Why, I have to go outside and walk down the road every time I want to see my neighbors trash cans.

It's simple Census fact. They are the ones who place dreary old Falls Church City behind so many other local areas in terms of median household income. It is a simple fact that the well-to-do in these parts shun Falls Church City in favor of the literally and figuratively greener pastures that they can find almost everywhere else.

> Well, the Little City isn't big enough for everyone, but

Oh, at one-seventh the size of Poquoson, it's a little city alright. Even more so in terms of being so very, very short on so very many things that people would actually want or value. The best you can really say for the place these days is that at least it's not a long drive or Metro ride to get to places that actually are worthwhile.

LOL. That only shows that if you actually collect & look at the data, you can find many places with higher per capita income! Sorry but if you insist on using facts to back up your arguments, you're going to have a difficult time around here. :-)

Actually it's the same loser responding under multiple names defending his boring concrete-filled life in lovely Falls Church. He squeezes on the metro each morning to go to his horribly boring government job in DC, where he literally does nothing other than post here all day. Life just ain't good for this chap. :-(

But give him some credit - he loves his Falls Church, and he'll defend it to the death. As long as born losers like him live in places like Falls Church, it's all the better for the rest of us. :-)

As an FYI, "Major Barbara" was a one-time poster at City-Data who apparently made our resident Falls Church failtard look very bad over there as well. Grudges are being held. Butthurt is at the helm. But it isn't just Major Barbara who's to blame here. Also reported as being on the list of those having kicked the living shit out of our local lame-boy over at C-D are such notable names as Reynard32, Oaktonite, and worst of all, the merciless Verdordud. Ouch! Of course, none of those is a current C-D poster either. It all just goes to show how severe the scarring has been. LOL!

At some levels, the distinction is important -- as in whether you pay City taxes or whether your kids attend City schools. When it comes to large-scale economic measures however, the distinction is simply perverse. In such terms, the 14,000 people and tiny two square miles of Falls Church City are not at all comparable to the 1.13 million people and four hundred square miles of Fairfax County. This is why most compilers of such data simply disregard the peculiarities of Virginia law and lump cities in with their local counties.

At granular scales of course, treatment of Falls Church City alongside its CDP peers is quite sensible. Dunn Loring for example is also just two square miles, but because it is an SFH-based suburb rather than some sardine-like slum, it has about 5,000 fewer people. Still the fact that median household income is about 23% higher in Dunn Loring than in Falls Church City is a useful and valid piece of information.

Similarly, Fort Hunt has a comparable though slightly larger population than Falls Church City, but it is spread out across nearly three times the land area. The fact that the median household income in Fort Hunt is 38% higher than in Falls Church City is also quite a telling and relevant thing.

Nothing in the Census data indicates Falls Church is "poor." You either don't have the facts or you don't know the definition of poor.

Sheesh, good point on population. ~14k people in 2 square miles. LOL. I didn't even realize how bad it was. Talk about horrible living conditions (for a "suburb"). The amount of ambient noise must be part of the reason this guy is so miserable. (Noise is highly correlated to stress levels.)

And he also posts on other forums about Falls Church? Now that's some funny shit. Not surprising though - when you have as much free time during the workday as he does, I guess one forum isn't enough!

And yet housing prices are higher in Falls Church City than in Vienna. Man, Vienna must suck.

On a scale of 1 to 10 of suckiness, Falls Church is a 10 and Vienna is a 9.9.

True.

This thread is like two Asians comparing dick sizes.

Vienna sucks for mostly the same reasons. Traffic noise as far as the ear can hear!

They do have the advantage of roughly half the population density though.

As is widely known, Vienna is one of many nearby areas where one can find a more modern home on a much larger lot with far better amenities for less money than in Falls Church City. No wonder those who are not stupid stay so consistently away
from FCC. Compared to its competition, the place is just an over-priced dump.

"Poorer" implies that the others are poor. Are you claiming you list of nondescript cherry picked CDPs consists of poor places? You really aren't too good with this whole vocabulary thing.

You can actually find many modern homes in Falls Church with far superior amenities than you'd find in most Vienna homes. The difference is, as you correctly pointed out, is that they are more expensive. As such, many home buyers settle for Vienna because they can't afford Falls Church.

Wrong. Unless being 6 inches away from your neighbor on a busy street with endless noise and ambulances and screaming kids and crime is an 'amenity'.

You really need to get out and about more. There are plenty of decent sized lots with very nice homes on quiet tree lined streets.

That is the verdict of downscale imbeciles who can't afford it. Or, it is the single verdict of one poster posting under multiple names. Take your pick.

It is a wonder that they bother with chairs at Caffe Amouri. There is so much butthurt in Vienna that it is surprising that anyone wants to sit down.

You might want to watch out if you are in Fairfax County because, you know, that's where the murders discussed in the article actually took place. The dead give away was the part where the sentence started "In Fairfax County...."

You wouldn't per chance be a product of the FCPS, would you?

Yes, Vienna residents attend FCPS schools, if they go public. City of Falls Church residents attend the superior City of Falls Church schools.

Well, sometimes you have to look to a person's childhood to truly understand their adult behavior. In the case of our FC Fanboi, he grew up in this neighborhood:

article-0-12EF340A000005DC-165_964x736.j

So you can perhaps understand why, to him, Falls Church seems like a paradise. :-)

BTW, you know you're in bad shape as a city when the best you can compare yourself against is Vienna. LOL.

I've lived in Lorton, Vienna and Falls Church. Vienna and Falls Church are very similar in the types of people that live there. Both are well educated and successful professionals. I'd give a slight edge to Vienna for overall livability, but not much of one. We moved to Falls Church two years ago for the schools.

As for Lorton, it's truly the arm pit of Northern Virginia. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I made the mistake when we first moved here 10 years ago of thinking it would be OK. They can call the areas by all the new fancy names they want, but it is still Lorton. I don't care how much cheaper it is to live there in price per square foot, it isn't worth it. There is little to nothing redeeming about living in that area. It might as well be part of Prince William County.

Ruh roh! If the metro is closing, how will FC Fanboi get to work??? Guess he'll have to work from home (i.e., post to FFU from home) all day. :-)

Chalk up another win for Falls Church. It boasts one of the most popular places in the region to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Even in a place so desperate for attention as Falls Church, a plague of locusts is not a win.

Aww, no need to be a whiney little bitch. No need to be a wet blanket. Throw back a pint and lighten up, Francis.

People go to places like Falls Church for the restaurants, sure. But living there?? Another story entirely.

Oh dear. The Falls Church Fanboi is getting pretty desperate. That's what happens though when a person gets frustrated! I love the restaurant claim:

"Hey man we have a nice Irish restaurant check out this article I bet you're jealous how about you suck on that Falls Church rules baby!!!"

Totally agree with the poster above about restaurants. Falls Church is the kind of place you go to for food. Then you get the hell out of there as quickly as you can, lest you be overcome by noise, concrete, pollution, and metro riders. :-)

Why are Falls Church City people posting on Fairfax Underground? Are they geography challenged?

Sweriously, nobody goes to Falls Church City to shop or to eat. There's simply nothing there.

That seems to be contrary to popular opinion here.

It's one loser (Fanboi) posting under multiple names. He gets ultra butthurt whenever Falls Church is criticized. Word on the street is that he trolls other forums as well, rabidly defending Falls Church's honor. LOL.

Oh, and he's challenged in many areas. :-)

Simple fact -- Falls Church is an outdated and over-priced dump. There is almost literally nothing there. Everywhere nearby is nicer. Except for 7 Corners and Culmore. Yuck!

"Overpriced" is a simple code word for "I can't afford it."

This happens with lots of areas. It seems a number of those who complain or "talk shit" do not live in said area....

LOL! "Dump" is a code word for "dump" and "overpriced" is a code word for "overpriced," each of those being a prime reason why so many people pack up their higher than FCC median household incomes and head off to live somewhere else a lot nicer -- often somewhere else with on the order of half the population density of Falls Church, somewhere else with more and better local options for shopping and dining, and somewhere else with newer, nicer homes on lots large enough for kids to throw or kick a ball around without having to use the neighbor's house as second base. Let's face it -- as an SFH-based, family-friendly suburb, Falls Church City peaked 50 years ago and has been in stark decline ever since. There are no signs of a reversal in that trend. Rather the city is now off on a campaign to become a late-bloomer Ballston wannabe. But they are so far behind in that endeavor. The place has missed that boat as well and now finds itself boxed in, unable to compete in either direction.
