i did not forget, but apparently my va state taxes got lost in the mail one year and a couple of years later i they sent me a court letter saying i missed taxes etc. I sent them the same information i had sent originally because i had the forms saved but still ended up have to pay over 1000 in penalties. I was supposed to get a refund of 120 dollars and had to pay a little over 1200 when all was done to clear it.

what makes you think you have the right to see his returns? Tax returns are private even for public officials.

You could have sent your returns via certified mail.

yeah i'm not smart enough to do that :P always used normal snail mail. Ever since though i simply e-file, that year i could not because VA does not accept e-file returns for split residency years. I moved from MD to VA that year. MD got my papers but VA somehow did not.

Virtually all of this tax fraud is perpetrated by small business owners who simply misclassify their expenses and earnings. These crooks are the major reason why the IRS only receives about 85% of the taxes that are actually owed in a given year. PPACA originally included expanded 1099 reporting that would have cracked down on this sort of fraud, but outraged Republicans managed to get all that repealed.

The IRS are the biggest crooks of them all though.

Create a simple flat tax and abolish the IRS.

You mean like "The Fair Tax?" LOL! Just another scheme to shift tax burden off of rich people and dump it onto everybody else. That would be YOU. The slop that stooges and numbskulls will fall for!

no they make minimums because places are charged a percentage of each transaction. If you use your card to buy a 25 cent peice of bubblegum the store is likely to lose money on that transaction. It was until 2010 against the law to set minimums though now it is legal to set it up 10 dollars i believe

how is it shifting tax burden, everyone would be paying the exact same percentage.

you make less, you pay less. you make more you pay more even if you both are only paying 10 percent.

10% flat tax, you make 100 thousand you will pay 10 thousand in taxes. if you make 100 million you will pay 10 million in taxes. I do not see where the burden is shifted rich will still pay more and there will not be loop holes to get out of it.

We have to mail in all of our returns for an odd reason but even when we don't owe I send them certified with return receipt.

Well, at the moment we have a progressive income tax structure which has the rich pay more and the poor pay less. Under a flat tax, the tax that the rich pay goes down and the tax that the poor pay goes up. It's really very simple math.

> you make less, you pay less. you make more you pay

Brilliant. But you've completely missed the point. It's also the case that 10% would be an inadequate rate, resulting in huge federal deficits. The average 1040 effective tax rate in 2012 was 13.1% For the top 5% by the way, it was 21.0%. For the bottom 50%, it was 3.3%.

All those greedy pigs making over $5 million a year should be paying at least 75% in taxes. Anyone making over $250,000 should pay no less than 50% in federal taxes.

you do realize spending will need to be cut too, but either way if we set a low flat tax rate more jobs would be created, more companies would form and or move their HQ back, companies would not feel the need to no longer keep their money in foreign banks to avoid being taxed at the highest rate in the world. why do you think companies are leaving in droves at the moment or you have companies such as Apple who keeps billions and billions in over seas bank?

Raise taxes economy will bust, lower taxes and the economy booms. Sure in the short term taxes would not be adequate and deficits will rise but in the long term where it really matters the tax base will have risen and deficits will start to fall. The problem in todays world is the government only thinks about what is best for the short term when they should be thinking about what is best long term.

10% is only an example anyways, it could be 15 percent etc. Regardless the tax system needs to become much more simple and lower all around.

No, that's wrong also. There is no necessary or practical link between federal receipts and outlays. The fact that we have regular federal deficits should have been enough to tell you that.

Sheesh! Learn the difference between personal and corporate taxes. And while you're at it, learn the difference between nominal and effective tax rates. Effective US corporate taxes vary widely by size and type of business, but overall are moderate in comparison to say, OECD countries.

LOL! Everyone realizes that there is a "national income effect" that partially offsets the loss in tax revenues that a tax cut entails. Under the best of circumstances, that offset will be less than 30% for income taxes, and less than 50% for capital gains taxes. You are simply advertising your ignorance by mouthing a foolish right-wing meme here.

It doesn't happen because -- so far at least -- the county isn't run by stupid people. A 10% tax hit on a poor person does big-time damage. A rich person would barely notice it. Try coming up with a tax that works to even out the BURDEN of taxation.

So no one has skipped a few $$$ from the tax man? I know a small business owner, not a restaurant who for 8 or 9 years did not declare tax on half the jobs he did. He got audited up the ass but nothing really came of it. Lucky I guess, that or he is broke but not telling anyone. Would they take your house? What would the penalty be for saying you earned say 60k income vs actually earning 200k?

Why do you the most skilled worker only work 1 hour a day.. I tell them . why should I work more.. I get no more money for my work.. They thought about it .. Then they got Pee Pee'd off because I was right and the Berlin Wall and Communism Fell .Now these Commies have been raised from the grave and want to start over in the USA .. And when you didn't receive the refund, didn't a little light bulb go on? Ahhh, where the heck is my refund? I better call to find out. Then they would have told you that they hadn't received your return.Could have been resolved before the next tax year and the penalty and interest would have been minimal. What you paid, ouch!

+1000

Even though I owe well over $10k every year, I always make it so I'm due a small "refund" on both State and Federal.

That way I know the bastards received and processed my returns.

You are lying. There are no penalties on late returns if you are getting a refund. The only "penalty" is that you have a limited number of years to file before you are not eligible for the refund.

Even that doesn't work. A couple of years ago we sent our return certified mail return receipt, and with a check for the balance due. We received the stamped receipt back indicating the IRS had received the return. They cashed the check. Yet they still insisted we had not filed the return and tried to impose penalties. We ultimately had to get the Congressman involved. The problem is there isn't an individual with your file who you can provide the necessary documents to and then can resolve the matter. Instead, if you can reach a human, all you get is "our computers show...". It is hard to argue with incorrect information fed into a computer unless there is a human who can correct it.

Sadly, I believe this. Bureaucracy and logic aren't friends, or even acquaintances.

On year I mailed mine certified/return receipt. It came back to the house a few days later, marked "Insufficient postage", even though there clearly was. I took it back to the Post Office, where the local Postmaster looked at it, agreed, and then TOOK MONEY OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET and bought the new stamp. He sadly explained to me that there was NO procedure for him to report this error. I felt badly for him, as it sure wasn't HIS fault. I assume that if anyone found out about it, he'd've been fired for doing the right thing.

$125,000. Got completely away with it.

The reason that we libs always favor higher taxes is that we never have any intention of paying them ourselves.
