Document Shredding Drop Off and Watch Places
Posted by: Clean Up ()

I need to shred about 10 files boxes of old papers. Does anyone know of a place that I can take the documents to and watch them get shredded?

Most of the places I googled have a van that will come to you and shred on site or pick up and take back to their office to shred later.

I am looking for a place that I can drive to this afternoon and unload these ten boxes and watch it all get shredded.

I don’t think I want to keep and longer my credit card statements from 1991 or my stock trade conformation slips from 1999.

Buy a shredder. Feed stuff into it. Watch what happens.

That's what libs would call "personal responsibility".

OP isn't nuts -- household-quality shredders overheat after a few pounds of paper. I guess the good news is that it's winter: do it in the garage and it'll overheat a bit slower and cool off faster. But it will still take hours.

I learned that at these free paper shredding events, they do not have to provide you with any written verification, that your papers were actually shredded.

Watch out.

Buy a cheap charcoal grill and burn them.

1-Throw them in your fireplace and burn them.
2-Shred a few a day using your own shredder.

Have you ever used the Fairfax monthly shred? They have two mobile shredding trucks and are shredding everything you drop off right there. The lines are usually so long you cannot wait and watch, but if you brought a second person to get out and watch til your particular bin is fed into the shredder, I don't think anyone would notice. Except maybe to point out your tinfoil hat.

If you've had the stuff that long, you might as well wait for a shredding day. You might not be able to sit and watch, but its free.

Or if you have a credit union, check the website and see if they do it. I had my stuff shredded at a credit union event, and they threw the stuff into the shredder while I was standing there.

Does your workplace have a shedding service? If it is one of those that has the locked bins, why don't you just take some to work a little at a time?

Hey Clean up,

Did you ever find a place? I was doing a search in the Reston area, and it seems like there's a ProShred in Sterling (Just north of Dulles). There are LOTS of drop off services that just hold your documents in a "Secure Container" while they wait for the pick-up that will take them somewhere else to shred.

The mobile shred trucks will come to your house to shred your stuff there, but that's a bit more $$ (quite a bit)

I'm still looking. May end up waiting for the local event in Vienna in June.

If you found something acceptable...please post the name of the place. Thanks
