Fairfaxians and "Keeping up with the Joneses"

Ok, so last year I got a great deal on a BMW 320i xdrive sedan. PAID ALL CASH, about $34k out the door. I got a nice bonus at work and decided to spoil myself- and my clients. It was getting tough shuttling them in my old (1999!) honda accord. I still have said accord too and tend to drive it more than the BMW, which is for work! Plus I can write off the mileage on my taxes- so it made sense for me. I could have gotten a 7, but decided to put that money to pad my Roth IRA and all that jazz.

So of course, my neighbor, trying to upstage me (probably because his wife said I was "cute" and loved my car, smiling when I pulled up in it and he happened to overhear, I am in my late 20's they are in their late 40's early 50's?)..

.... went out and a month later he had a brand new BMW M3 alpine white and all that in his driveway (we are about 3 townhouses apart in a solid middle-class community here in Ffx).

Guess who got repo'd an hour ago? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

WHY do people feel they have to keep up with everyone else? She had a nice 2011ish camry, he had a paid-off F150 which looked pretty nice, had the monster tires and all that. I know they were paid off because he mentioned it to me one day while going to get the mail.

So he traded his paid-off truck to go into debt $65,000 just to try to upstage me??? I hadn't said two words to him past hello and the "respect" head nod!!

He will be PISSED when he gets home, I know his wife has already called him screaming why did they take your car honey? She ran outside in a tshirt and sweatpants when the tow man started to drag the car out of the driveway (her camry was parked inside and his was on the outside, room for 2 cars in a line here). She ran outside to scream @ the tow man but he had the car hooked up in like 5 seconds and was GONE....lucky tow man!!!

I am glad I heard her yelling and looked out the window- mad i didn't have my phone so i could record it...it was too wild the way she was screaming!!!

TL;DR Keeping up with the Joneses is FAIL. Why go into debt for a depreciating asset just to "look" better than someone else? He knew damn well he couldn't afford to keep up with the townhouse (they run about 500k here) AND a 65k car on his one salary of probably < $100,000 a year!!!

Ironic I was reading on a news site about how repo's have gone up in the past year and more and more people are late on their payments...and to see it happen IRL!!!!

Another look at me! look at me! me too loser giving a shit what other people think of him...who cares about your stupid vanity car. It's not a M series anyway (at least you can respect it for its performance capabilities).

You are just another borish bmw driving nobody, in a town of borish bmw driving nobodys, who sounds like a loser whining about what people think about him.

I don’t buy the story for one minute, but for the sake of argument, who the hell is so caught up with status that they notice shit like this and actually feel they are better than their neighbors because they drive a more expensive car? And then take the time to write a story about it?

I drive a 2011 Camry myself and I don’t give a damn what my friends, neighbors or relatives think about it. It’s my business not theirs. And I feel the same way about their vehicles. I mean really - do people honestly keep track of such crap for the purposes of assessing their status?

I know a multi-millionaire (my brother) who drives a 10 year old Ford pick-up truck and a $13/hr warehouse worker (employee) who drives a BMW X4 Sport. I don’t know how or why but each to their own…

I think the OP might have a mild form of narcissism if this is legitimate. Nobody pays attention to this.

Lots of people. Those who don't want the hassle of researching financing options, hate the annoyance of paying monthly bills, and many other reasons. I've paid cash for every car I ever owned.

Then you're doing it wrong since in recent years it costs you nothing to virtually nothing to use somebody else's money to finance your car. You can put your own money to better productive use.

Oh, and the OP is full of shit.

BMW 320i? Why not just ride a scooter? The 328i is already pretty weak. Getting the 320i is something parents probably do for a teenage high school girl. It's something people who don't know better enjoy.

I bet OP is a teenage girl in high school.

My time is worth something and I prefer to own it outright if only for my own emotional reasons. The difference between the loan rate and the rate of return for $30-$60k isn't enough to change my mind.

+1

It's not really worth the trouble.

What are you going to do with that money, put it into a CD getting next to nothing or in to a stock market that's entering a bear market?

Now when it comes to financing a home, that's a different story.

Cool story, bro. A 320i isn't impressive at all and is marketed to poor people who want to appear rich but can't afford an actual BMW (5-series and above). But whatever. Enjoy your low-tier "luxury" car.

I don't think OP bought his car to impress others.

Anyways, a 335 or m3 cost more than an "actual" 5 series 528, 520.

Well, at least you understand that you're making an emotional vs a good financial decision.

I don't much like debt myself and never take on any if I can avoid it as a general principle either. Nor would I buy a car or anything else just because the financing was cheap. But if somebody's going to give me free use of money for something that I'm buying otherwise, then I'm more than happy to take it.

I don't buy new cars due to the depreciation and VA property tax. However I'm curious about the price difference of paying cash vs. financing. Would you get a lower purchase price by paying cash, or would the dealer jack up the price because he won't be making anything on financing?

I know some places like Ford will have incentives associated with using their in-house financing. I saw this on the commercials for a while.. not sure if it's limited time or always offered. You could get $500/$1000 off the purchase price of a new car if you financed it through Ford Credit or FMC Credit.. whatever it's called. Typically there is no payoff penalty, so the smart thing to do is finance whatever the minimum is and then pay it off or immediately have that loan refinanced/picked up by a place of your choice.

It's all about how much cash you have on hand and how liquid you want to be. Overall you will likely save a bit to pay cash.. but then you don't have it on hand for immediate use. Unless you think you can invest your money and get a rate better than your loan % of course.

The new car dealership racket exists in infinite complexity. If you can manage to pit one dealer against another over the exact same car, you might be able to get somewhere. Otherwise, you are going to end up paying more than the lowest amount the dealer would have sold it to you for. Nobody ever got a great deal on a new car. Some were just screwed a little less than others.
