Best Semi-Auto Rifle for the price ($700-$1200)
Posted by: Gun Show Feb 11-12-13-14 ()
Date: February 05, 2016 12:56AM

Went to my first gun show last year and am looking to buy a semi-auto rifle this year before the prices go up again because of Obamao's executive orders.

I'm interested in getting a rifle that is:

a) Semi-auto
b) Has reasonably priced ammo that is also effective
c) Isn't more expensive than $1500
d) Is durable
e) Has parts pretty readily available for upgrades and replacements if necessary

I've done some research online and it sounds like the Cmet is good but you might have to do some adjustments. Also have seen Saiga listed a lot as being a good buy. Also have seen the FN FAL listed frequently as a good bang for your buck. Not sure if the AR-10/15 is that good for the price or people mainly like it because it looks similar to a full-auto military grade rifle.

I'm still relatively new to all of this stuff and a lot of it is a foreign language to me. Any information is greatly appreciated. I'd like to get something I can take to the range and shoot off 100-200 rounds and it won't be THAT expensive. Seriously, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Also will likely get a shotgun too and am looking at Mossbergs and they seem to be pretty badass. Thanks again for any help.

If you're looking for home protection, then the Mossberg 500 Tactical with the pistol grip might be the one. I wanted to go for the Mossberg when purchasing, but picked the Remington 870 Tactical due to availability. Similar concept.

A few weeks back, Tactical Sh!t had a picture of a 12-gauge round that had these copper tentacles that would open after being fired and create a 2.5" hole in your "ahem" target. I need to check into those more - better than any buckshot when it absolutely, positively needs to be done correctly.

Don't waste your money. Use it to install a decent home security system instead.

You're kidding right? Home security systems are worthless and provide a false sense of security. They also can be disabled and need electricity to work. Lots of pitfalls to that kind of system. Only niggers are dumb enough to not know how to disable it. They also might just rob you anyway even with the alarm going off. Whenever I see an ADT sign, I think how stupid these people are to think that it's going to stop anyone.

No shit. Most of the homes in my neighborhood have security systems with prominently displayed signs advising criminals of that fact. I prefer to leave my doors unlocked--and open when weather permits whenever I am home. The setup of my house is such that I am immediately aware of anyone entering, and I do have closed-circuit cameras. I have a fairly substantial arsenal and it's my hope that one day I will get bag an intruding negro or two (white trash criminals are acceptable targets as well). Nothing beats watching a would-be burglar bleed out on a highly waxed hardwood floor.

This is a little extreme for me... but I can't say I don't agree! :D

Only some low grade burglar would honestly be deterred by a stupid sign and alarm system. The only people buying this shit are retarded government employees and liberals.

I am a Supporter of the 2nd amendment as much as anyone on FXU,and enjoy shooting sports, but I must say, you cant just shoot someone in your home, even if they broke in. You better know the law. If you tell them to stop and they back away at gunpoint and get out, that's it, leave um be. You cant shoot at anyone that's leaving or trying to leave. If they charge you that's different, you have to do what you have to do. Now pointing a gun at someone outside your home is a different story, You can't do that unless they display a weapon, you will be charged with brandishing if you do and they don't have a weapon, If there outside call the law and let them handle it. Stay inside. Don't be stupid.

That said the last thing I ever would want to have to do is shoot anyone.

As far as the gun question goes, Any AR 15 platform rifle will be just fine in .223. You can do all kinds of things with it and 1300 dollars buys a lot of horns and whistles to go with it. My preference is a Colt. The original GI maker other then Armalite , the late Eugene Stoner's Company who developed the rifle. .308 rifles have much more power and penetration, If you shoot one in a house it can go completely thru the house.. A .223 can do that too, but with less penetration so yes or no. The .223 is very easy to handle and shoot and small women can handle them with ease. Its the US military's battle caliber now for way over 45 years for good reasons. And much cheaper to shoot as well.

Be careful of the "Tactical Shotguns", they often do not allow for interchangeable barrels, they are often purpose build units.

I would prefer to get a more flexible shotgun that I can configure as a "Tactical" or "Sporting" gun. Better option would be to purchase a more flexible platform that will allow to many configurations as well would likely have a larger resale market.

Thank you for your advice. So what would you recommend then for shotguns? No Mossberg or Remmington? I'm still new to this so the more information the better.

How about shotguns? What kind would you recommend?

If someone is in your house and you can establish that you have reason to fear for your life, you can blast the fool.

I don't think it would be a good idea to just start firing (people have killed their teenage kids sneaking back into the house this way), but as soon as you see a weapon, or any attempt at aggression toward you, or even an attempt to reach in pockets or not put hands where they are visible when you ask them to do.so, blast away. Legally, you are pretty safe in VA with this approach. Other states, not so much. Google the Castle Doctrine. Intesting stuff.

Make sure your kids know that sneaking into the house quietly is not a good idea. Better to turn on lights and make some noise. Mine know that, and I'm not mad for being awakened like that. They know that anyone moving about quietly in the dark is going to catch a round or two in the chest.

I'd buy an American-made AR, preferably from a big name company. Some places on line were clearing out the first generation S&W AR's for $550. That's a heck of a lot of gun with the Smith name and their excellent customer service to fix any problem you might have.

The new S&W AR's are about $150 more, but that gets you a dust cover and a forward assist. If you're dragging the thing through the mud and dust and not cleaning it for a week at a time, both are nice things to have. If you're actually maintaining the rifle, one could argue that neither are really necessary.

Colt, Ruger, Smith, Armalite, Bushmaster, DPMS--if it's a big American manufacturer that's 10 years old or older, you really can't go wrong.

I guess if you never served with the military but wasted money on a military style carbine and have nothing to shoot, you then shoot your mouth off and brag about your gun.
Why buy one when you can have two for twice the price?

I'll second the recommendation on the Ruger AR 556. Good gun.

For a shotgun, go find a used Remington 870 Wingmaster (3" chamber). You should be able to find one for $2-400 on one of the gun sites or at a show. Likely the only shotgun you will ever need.

For a semi auto rifle- the winner hands down would be a basic AR15 in .223/5.56. You can pick up a good basic model for around $500 to $700. I would suggest a S&W or Bushmaster as a starting point. There are others as well but these will be the two cheapest priced ones you will find at the gun show.

Another option would be get a 9mm AR15. Plenty of cheap ammo everywhere for it.

Stay away from .308/7.62 rifles like the FAL. The ammo cost a lot more and there really is no where around here cheap and easy to shoot them at.

I am not a big fan of Ruger made ARs.

For a shotgun, remington 870.

Ain't it about big guns and big bullets? I mean that's what you see in the movies. Why else would you buy a gun if it ain't the biggest on the block?
