Those of us that work at real jobs leave about 6:30am EVERY day. We start work at 8am and work until 5pm. We get home around 7pm, maybe later depending on traffic. We don't get snow days and 2 weeks vacations a year.

On many occasions we also work weekends to meet deadlines.

But teachers only get paid to work their contract hours of 8 hours a day. When they work beyond that it's for free. Lots of teachers work at home after they leave school for the day and on weekends. Also they don't get paid over the summer so I don't think you can consider that a paid vacation.

Why do people hate teachers so much on this site?

WmTeachers actually got an education. You smoked weed and just passed high school. No wonder you have a shitty job. If you don't like your job get a different one. The FCPS teachers don't have to change jobs to get paid a lot more, they just switch counties. Now only shitty career switcher teachers get hired in FCPS. We can't even hire all the teachers we need because we pay hundreds of thousands less than neighboring counties.

Yes, that's the same in the professional business world. The difference is we work all month and every month of the year. We don't 3 months off during the Summer and a week off every month during the Winter.

We also don't get full gov pensions when we retire. We have to pay for our pensions.

Ok so what's your solution? Year round school and no student or teacher holidays? Is that what it would take for teachers to have value in your eyes?
Also, when I was in the professional business world I was paid overtime when I worked beyond my contract hours...
I'm not saying people in other fields don't work hard too. Just because their work structure may look different doesn't mean that teachers don't work their asses off for little pay. Why does it have to be mutually exclusive? Teachers work hard, engineers work hard, doctors work hard, accountants work hard..... Etc.

I would shoot myself in the face if I had that kind of commute.

They do not get paid three month vacations. THey are not paid for the summer time off. Their contracts are for 10 month/190 days. The full time staff which is mostly the admin staff are 12 month/260 day contracts. Please get your facts straight before bitching

Here is one way to look at it-

Full time work is about 2000 hours a year divided by 190 days=about 10.5 hours a day or 52.6 hours a week. They just cram all their full time hours into "190 days".

^^^They also spread those 52.6 hours a week over 7 days, since they do a lot of planning and grading outside of school hours (yes, evenings and weekends).

I know teachers who grade papers at Happy Hour sipping an adult beverage.

i do not know where you come from but every single full time job i have had whether it is working for FCPS or some Pizza Resteraunt a Full time work week is considered 40 hours. Every hour over 40 is overtime, NO most teachers do not get overtime pay as they are considered Salary and are exempt, only hourly employees get the overtime pay.

No, they are paid a flat fee divided by 10 (months). Forty hours a week does not factor in anywhere. Their contracts also require them to do certain things outside of regular school hours as determined by their superiors. They are on salary.

And yes, they do work very, very hard.
But, they are on salary. I have worked both on salary and also been paid by the hour. They are two very different things.

I recall sending a e-mail question right before the last big storm we had, must have been 2010 or so, when school was out for a week. Teacher did not respond until well after school was back in session.

However, when you see no indication of activity after school hours (grading, assignments posted, e-mails answered, etc) it makes the assertion that teachers are working 50 or 60 hours a week hard to believe.

i am also paid a flat fee but once my 8 hours are up i go home. The only difference is when situations require me to work longer hours i do not get paid overtime for it like most non salary personnel would be. You are basically putting extra hours of work in for free. Lucky for me this rarely happens in my case!

The Teachers are the same they are only required to be at the school officially during business hours unless they volunteer for an after school activitity which yes they are encouraged to do so but is not a requirement.

Most teachers will stay afterwards on their free will to give extra help to certain kids and or plan for the next day/week whatever and some may take their paperwork home and spend all night grading assignments. Their work is never done.

School isn't open 8 hours a day in a lot of schools. The high schools aren't open eight hours.

I'm not a teacher but i still work for FCPS and i certainly read my email while i'm off but unless it is an emergency situation i do not respond until the next day.

High School office hours are 7:15 am to 3:45pm (kids are 8:10 to 2:30)

Middle School Office hours are 7:00 am to 4:00pm (kids are 7:30 to 3:00)

Elementary School office hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm. (kids are 8:15 or 9am to 3:15 or 4pm)

The office hours are when teachers and staff are supposed to show and then leave.

you are correct, but at the same time the cost of living in fairfax is so high that most of FCPS employees actually live in the surrounding counties. They may not necessarily want to leave, some may stay for that reason but others while they don't want too still will not only for the higher pay but less travel time too.

you wouldn't have to tell your boss that if you actually complete it on time. Secondly if your boss was competent enough he would already know you are failing to complete it in the proper time allotted. The more time it takes you to complete a job the less time you are spending on another job to make the company even more money. Your company is losing out twice, not only do they have to pay you extra hours to complete a job you can't complete in the time originally planned and they also lose out on those hours you could be spending another another job.

Poor teacher leaving at 8am and just getting home (to a 3 day weekend no less with tomorrow being a FCPS holiday). I don't think people hate teachers -- I just think the rest of us work day in and day out with 2 wks vacation (50 wks/yr) on salary very similar to what these part time workers receive. What's not similar are the benefits of premier health insurance and pensions. And not every teacher has kids in class - many have adults in vocational classes. (Check out Cosmetology Instructor faculty ---- crazy!).

Taxpayers are tired of paying your way for a part time job...while we don't have anything even similar to what you're getting.

So your basis on determining whether or not teachers work over 40 hours is whether or not they responded to your email or posted something on blackboard? Makes sense...

They couldn't POSSIBLY be doing other things that don't require an online presence like...grading papers, writing an IEP, creating lesson plans, filling out progress reports, completing paperwork, making copies, sitting in a meeting, etc.

They lump a year of work into 9 or 10 months and spread the checks over 10 months.

it is a student holiday. All FCPS staff including teachers are required to show.
Yes that do and have already show, just drive by any school and you will see the staff parking mostly full. A high school may look empty but remember 2 thirds of their parking are for seniors and juniors not staff.

i'm not even a teacher but i bitch for them as i completely understand what they go through every day. Whether you believe it or not does not make the FACT of what they do to not be true.

Face it, the job of "teacher" includes much, much more than simply the hours spent in the classroom. There's a whole other side of the moon than the one you see when you look up in the sky at night as well.

The whiners here are completely unqualified to become a teacher. This is first because there is not a subject under the sun about which they know enough to be able to teach it. And it is second because they wouldn't know the first thing about how to teach a group of young people how to do so much as tie their own shoes. No talent as a teacher and no subject matter to teach. This is how and why they got stuck off in some dead-end job and dead-end life.

My daughter has always wanted to be a teacher, and now that she is almost out of high school she still wants to be one and i try to explain to her how hard the job may be and how alot of people disrespect them as a proffession. YET she still wants to teach kids. Most people don't decide to teach for a job but because they have a passion for it.

If you are working the 50+ hour weeks that many claim, one would expect some evidence would show up in what has become an increasing online job. A grade posted, an email sent, assignments uploaded. If I had a white-collar employee claiming to work 50 hours a week yet only saw activity between 8 and 5, I'd be very suspect.

The claims of 50 hour work weeks are just not credible.

This is such a shell game. Do you get 3 mos vacation? No. Are you paid an annual salary? Yes.

The average teacher salary in FCPS is $66,782 for 194 days at 7.50 hours per day. That's $45/hr. It's also only 1455 hours per year, leaving a solid 300 - 400 hours available for other work and income. Now 66K may not be a great salary, but it is clearly designed to be an annual salary, something that someone can live on for the entire year. Call the summer time whatever you want, but you are paid a living annual wage that would allow you to not work in the summer, or supplement your income if you wish.

see that is where the issue comes in, you base your math on the official business hours, but yet do not factor in all the hours they have to use on their personnal time to do their job properly. Most Teachers just don't put in their 8 hours and that is it for the day. you may not believe so but does not negate the FACT is true.

People who say teachers work 7.5 hours a day obviously don't know a single teacher. My wife stays most days 1-2 hours AFTER the end of the day. Then I can expect her to put in AT LEAST an hour per night. Then on the weekend, it isn't uncommon for her to spend 3-4 hours working. All told that's a conservative 45 hours that will most certainly grow by SEVERAL HOURS at certain points of the year.

The formula works out to 52 hours per week during the school year in order to
get 2000 hours in for the entire year, which is full time.

The real issue is Real Estate taxes have sky rocketed the last 15 years. I for one pay well over $500 a year to live in my own house. FCPS suck up most of the money. Teachers are an easy target to vent frustrations on.

Most teachers do get disrespected but usually from people sitting behind a computer and on the occasion that it is to their face by a parent, then you go into the grade book and slowly start to lower their child's grade until it is impossible for them to get the grade that they want. :-D Any other questions?
