hello everyone had a question how do the VA police know that our cars have actual insurance on them or do they not.

Patriot Act.

Also, the cops are omnipotent and infallible.

I paid cash for my car. I can't remember, one way or the other, if the dealership needed any sort of insurance info. I know the dealer had to file an "8300 form" but I really can't remember whether or not they needed insurance info.

I think VA is one of the few states that doesn't ask for proof of insurance along with license and registration when you get pulled over. I know Maryland cops usually ask for it, but often don't if you have VA plates. Other states might not be so lenient.

A car parked on public roads without plates can be ticketed or towed (or with out of date registration, inspection, etc.)

If you are concerned, buy a car cover, and keep it covered, and if you see cops meddling around, just walk up to them and ask them what they are doing.

Otherwise, park it on private property and there is nothing anyone can do. There are three cars (a jeep and two other pieces of shit) parked in J Gilbert's parking lot with no plates that have been there for over 6 years. Obviously abandoned, and nobody seems to know what to do about it.

I seem to remember you having a falling out with someone on this site and accusing them of having a trust fund and whatever else.

To be able to meet the $250,000 liability minimum, you must have some hefty trust fund.

I myself am independently destitute. I can't imagine being able to show a bank statement to the DMV that would preclude me from having auto insurance.

Maybe I don't understand the DMV rules? I know about the $500 uninsured motorist fee that used to exist, but to be able to prove that you have enough money to pay for wrongful death, you must have a lot of money laying around.

Call brandywine, they'll give you $150 for each car. I have 2 dead cars.

Anybody have any idea why car insurance is so damn expensive around here? I got one hell of a deal on a new car today, and then got an insurance quote for $400 a month...what the hell? Looking around it wont get much better than that. I have friends that live in Winchester, VA that have more expensive cars, and even worse driving records and they pay half for full coverage...it just doesn't make sense.

Just look at the accident and theft statistics for each area.

Your insurance rates will change up or down if you move from one zip code to another. It all has to do with actuarial tables.

Your friends in Winchester don't drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic, or have high auto-theft rates. Even if they drive all the way into DC, their rates are based on Winchester's statistics and actuarials.

If more cars are stolen or wrecked in Oakton than in McLean, the rates are going to be higher in Oakton.

There are some tactics you can use to lower your insurance. If your primary car is really expensive, or on the list of frequently stolen vehicles, you can buy a junker and tell your insurance company that it is your work/business vehicle, and the more expensive car is your "pleasure" vehicle. Sometimes, having two vehicles insured can actually lower your rates. I noticed this a few times when I had bought a new car and had not yet sold my previous car. My rates went up once I took the old car off my plan. Granted, it was only about $50 - 100 a year, but that is still significant.

Also, don't call any 800 number to get your insurance coverage. Deal with a local agent. They are not working for a particular corporation, they are independent insurance agents, often licensed by several different insurance corporations. They work on commissions, so they want to make you happy, not the corporate insurers.

Laban Sadtler, in Vienna, is really cool. He will plug everything into his computer, your address, your car(s) and your driving record, and whatever else, and he'll find you the best rates he has available from whatever insurance companies he represents. And if he finds a better rate down the road, he'll call you up and let you know. Independent agents are the best way to go. If you call the corporate number, you'll get the retail rates.

Laban's phone number, on my proof of insurance, is, 938-0500. His office is above Marco Polo.

If you're being quoted 400 a month, you have one hell of a shitty driving record. Or, maybe you're Asian...
What kind of car? A Ferrari?

I think part of the reason that insurance is high, in general, is because VA doesn't require people to carry liability. If you're some shithead, illegal bean-person, or other degenerate driving a beater, you can skip insurance altogether for a $500/year fee. Then, you can drive like a mama-san ramming anything in your path and your innocent victims have to cover their damages with their Uninsured Motorist coverage. That's just a theory, though.

$400 a month???? I agree with the Capn.

We have two recent vintage cars....they're $440 for 6 months - combined.

I'm not sure why you'd be willing to take that type of risk. Like i said earlier, my fam as coverage on both cars for $900 a year. Yes, its double what you paid, but I dont feel like I'm on pins and needles every time I start the ignition.

As long as you are a good driver, dont crash, and can avoid people who are trying to run into you, you don't need insurance

I found him by accident years ago. I was looking for the number for Allstate and somehow got his number. When I called and said I wanted a policy with allstate, he came back with three alternatives, nationwide, geico and some other company. I liked nationwide's reputation over the others, so I chose that one.

Besides, I think it's always better to work with a local small business than with some offshore or out of state corporation.
