Posted by: landlord ()
Date: June 30, 2009 01:08PM

I need help with this day labor thing. Someone told me to just pull up and shout the skill you need, and how many men. so if I need my kitchen retiled, do I just say "Kitchen tile" and "2" and how should I pay them? do i provide tools? material?

Most day laborers do not have tools with them in the pick up lots around Home Depots, Culmore, etc. For a job like tiling kitchens, you will obviously need to provide tools to day laborers. You will also need to buy materials. I have never seen a day laborer standing around with boxes of tiles, spacers, mastic, and grout. You should pay them in cash. A fair rate in this economy depends on the skill level of the laborer. For two people you might end up paying $15-20/hr for someone who has experience and $8-10/hr for someone to help out the experienced guy. Tiling, while not overly difficult, does require a certain amount of skill and experience. Also, it would help if the laborer knows how to use a wet saw. The earlier you go in the mornings the more skill sets you will find. Many of these people are desperate for work, so they may tell you they are good at tiling when in fact they are actually quite bad. Small mistakes can make a tile job look like shit.

Given all that, I probably wouldn't use a day laborer to do tile in my kitchen. To many what-ifs involved. Unless you know for certain what skill sets a laborer possesses, you should only use them for demolition, yard work, less skilled jobs.

If you know a contractor that can vouch for a laborers work, that might be an exception.

If I were you, I would pay at least $13 an hour. Then, I would estimate how long the job would take (depending on size/complexity of tiled area), and offer one fixed price. This will save you the hassle of them taking their sweet-ass time to get paid more.

Watch this guy end up hiring demolition specialists for tile work and having his bathroom look like total ass.

I'll say this - for work done inside a house, most day laborers can do demolition, sheetrock, painting and basic carpentry. Things of a more detailed nature such as electrical, plumbing, tile, HVAC, etc. you really should hire a contractor or find somebody reputable who can point you to somebody. Or as harry homeowner said, you may end up getting a guy who can only mow lawns tell you that he knows tile work b/c he needs money and it'll look like shit or fall apart in 3 months. But that's the dice you have to roll if you want to use undocumented/unlicensed workers.

If they were really skilled at laying kitchen tile, they wouldn't be standing outside Home Depot ready to jump in the back of the first pick-up that slows down and so much as looks at them.

Can they work hard all day? Yes.

Do they have the experience to lay kitchen tile the right way, all day? No.

You'll get what you pay for. Good luck trying to sell your house with it's fucked-up kitchen floor.

We got a guy in the neighborhood my brother picked up years ago for a small painting job. He now does fencing, tiling, brick laying, all sorts of sh*t... he's almost too good to be doing lawn work and crap like that and now does work for all the neighboring homes because of word of mouth. He lives pretty comfortable, not the best but a lot better than most of them dudes. That said, unless you need some simple painting or yard work done I'd be careful. To have them do tile is probably familiar to most of em' however something tells me it's probably not a great idea.

$20 /hr

So would it be wrong to hire one of them to pull weeds, mow grass and do general landscaping labor around our garden? What would be a decent offer for labor like that? How about help with putting up a fence? It's basic labor, no real skill required.....and we would provide the tools and materials for the job.

My husband does this type of work for a living. If you want the job done right, don't hire a day laborer at all. Frequently homeowners hire day laborers who totally mess the job up. The homeowners in turn have to call my husband (or someone who is a professional) to clean it up. This costs waaaay more money than if they hadn't been cheapskates and had it done right in the first place.

For caucasian laborers the rate should be honest and competitive; between $14-$16$an hour. For the lowlife illegals, maybe $6.50 an hour and provide lunch. Make sure to get their names and turn them into immigration when your project is finished though.

A day laborer will come back and kill you or break in your house. The sooner you stop hiring them the sooner they will go home.

Hiring illegals is like feeding bears.

Get a licensed contractor.

Probably like 4-5 million a year, more if they are talented. Some really good ones though (Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, etc.) can make over 20 million a year in salary alone!

The bottom line is day laborers will do the job for much cheaper then any one else. I have used them to tile my kitchen bathroom paint my house and put down hardwood floors. Most of these guys are skilled workers who are either not licensed or are illegal. I am ok with hiring an illegal to do work for me they also have to feed their families. If it wasn't for illegal immigrants I wouldn't be here. Most of the crimes and human waste that's draining our economy out of life is good old useless Americans at least these guys are trying to work. A good number of these contract companies hire them anyway you're just cutting out the middle man. If anyone want photos i think i have some photos of one the apartments an "illegal" did. After the savages that were living there moved out the whole apartment had to be gutted to make it livable again. He took it down to the bare and rebuilt it. He only charged me $7k when other general contractors were giving me quotes of over 20k. The bottom line is ask to see their prior work.

Funny we should be talking about tile work. The previous owners of our house, a group of hispanics named "Rivera", got foreclosed on. While they were living here, they tiled the kitchen and the bathrooms. Apparently, accessories such as floor leveler and tile spacers were deemed unnecessary. When the grout ran out, they found some that was a "similar" color. And when they got to door frames or heat registers, they just cut or broke tiles to sort of fit, and made up the difference in the grout. In the upstairs bathroom, they changed the layout of the tiles to avoid cutting for the door frame of the closet.

The moral of this story? Hire a tile guy.

NEVER let day people into your house that you dont know or that you could never find again.

you think they wont notice that 65 inch big screen? Or the china they could sell? Or anything else that is worth more than $5 to steal?

Day laborers should be used for outdoor work. Protecting your home means not letting everyone know what you have to steal.

At the risk of sounding stupid (I know almost nothing about hiring contractors for home renovation) - Is this a troll post? $15 an hour seems ridiculously low. I want to have my bathroom tiled, but assumed the labor would be much, much, more. Or is the difference between using an individual and using a company with a guarantee?

I think $15 is low, I would think that a business would pay somebody like that around $25/hr - however, that is not what the company would charge you (the client). My experiences have been that a company charges the client at least 2-3 times the employees hourly wage.

Don't be fooled: tiling isn't hard, but until you get the hang of it, it's easy to mess up. There's nothing wrong with hiring an individual who has experience as opposed to a larger company, but get references from his last 3 jobs of similar work. Not "give me 3 references", but "give me your most recent 3 references from similar projects". That way you're not letting him cherry pick his best references. If he gives you something from 2006, that may be a red flag.

Also, with the collapse of the new construction market, there are many persons out there who have the skill and ability, but are unemployed and just need to make any kind of money they can, or are looking to start their own little business. And since those types of people would need good word of mouth to keep themselves going, so they'd do a good job (in theory).

Also don't forget there is labor involved in ripping our the old tile and preparing the sub-surfaces for new installation.

It is also illegal to hire anyone without documenting that they are in the country legally. This applies to hiring the neighbor's kid to babysit or to mow the lawn. You also have to pay unemployment and other payroll taxes on these individuals. So, many Americans are hiring people illegally!

Everytime some dumbass neighbor of mine used day laborers for a major project, people would find things stolen (One guy had his entire SUV cleaned out of high-end power tools, and a TV).

Id rather go to craig list. At least the person speaks english and had a computer with internet conection. I can tell you about 3 or 4 uggly day laborer experience. I hired one mexican to just help me hand me the tooks. Not to really do the work. I had a framing nail gun and I was finished doing the task. He picked it up and shut a nail through his hand. Everything was off and disconected. I asked him why did you do that?
He was like; I doo noo. I though it was off. Shit; my wife was like. I took him to the hospital, they wanted to transfer him somewhere else. Some dude came with a pair of Leatherman Pliers. This exchange intern doctor from africa took the nail out as allo this other trauma doctors were taking pictures with their phone. This Mexican dessapear for 5 months. Then I got a letter from his lawyer in Falls Church. He claim disability and wages with medical fees. I spent about 200 hrs fucking around with this case. Another time another Mexican worker came all the way to my house asking for more work. I told him that I didnt need anything. Then I said I don't have money. e said that if I could put gas in my car I had money.
I went to craigs list and I get the average american dude. Honest dude that would tell me. Give me 80 for the rest of the day. Some times they are like, Give me 100 for all day. I'l do anything for 100.00 day plus food.
I have a great time talking all day and working on the yard or anything with this guys.

Wow it is complete ignorant asses like you that are just part of the problem. Tried hiring a couple of "americans" to work in our yard service. Yeah right, and these 'hard working' illegals also STEAL from their employers, loiter in public places panhandling, rape women when they get off work, drive around our neighborhoods while drunk, killing our children with their illegal cars. Just to come 'home' to a housefull of anchor baby 'americans' with 50 cars parked all up and down the street and a housefull of sponges on our emergency services, schools and welfare. The same houses that put AMPLIFIED DJ speakers in the garage and blast redundant beat carnival music that all sounds the same.

So yeah 'Txgal161', WE are the problem, NOT Un-American PIECES OF SHIT like you!
I hope one of your illegal workers leaves your body in a ditch one day when he is done using your dumb bitch ass.

I made the mistake of hiring a laborer and his brother to rake my leaves after I bought my house. It hadnt been done in over a year, and was about 6" deep around the whole yard. I gave them $50 and said I would buy them any beer they wanted. They requested Miller Lite, so I got them a case. They did an okay job that ended with 45 garbage bags of leaves on my curb, but the one guy came by every couple weeks for almost a year asking if we needed anything else done. Pretty obnoxious. Last time I saw him, about a year ago now, he said he couldn't find work because he "didn't have papers" and didnt know what to do. Haven't seen him since.

Because of people like you that enable the day laborers to stand around this area is all jacked up. Thanks for bringing everyone's property values down and increasing all the other costs like health care, school, public safety. I hope your project gets all screwed up. Maybe, if I get lucky, they will return to your house at a later date and burglarize it.

I tried to hire someone to help me in my yard for a year and a half. No luck. I was offering $10.00 per hour, I'd pay for lunch, and a paid lunch half-hour. I do not like the illegal immigrant situation, but finally I went and hired a day laborer. I can only assume he was illegal. He worked hard and was worth every penney I paid him (eight hours--from the time I picked him up till the time I took him home). The teen-age and unemployed Americans did not seem to want the money, so...

Our problem is not day laborers but out-sourcing jobs overseas to places like Bangalore India..That's where jobs are going now. Hence the high unemployment rate in this country. Day lababores are just trying to get enough money to eat and get then next Corona. They pose no threat. However, those indians want our jobs and can do it real cheap..

Does Sony sit around and complain about Sanyo stealing all of their TV customers?

No, they make a better product.

The reason so many "real americans" don't have jobs is that so many of them are pansy-ass whiny slack-asses that do a half-assed job and want double time pay for it and then try to file for unemployment when they get fired underperforming.

There are millions of unfilled jobs in this country, even in the middle of this shitty economy. The problem is the average american doesn't think about how to make themselves a contender for any of those jobs anymore. They expect to half-ass their way through school, they expect to have little more than partying stories to show for college, they expect jobs to come to them, they expect to like their job, they expect to get raises for their half-assed performance and they expect to retire to some fucking paradise when they are 50.

Meanwhile, somebody else is willing to go stand out in the fucking heat and get into cars with strangers every day of their life and go work in the sun pulling weeds just to make a buck.

Before you start calling immigrants stupid, just realize, they've managed to grasp and profit from our capitalist system without even speaking the fucking language, meanwhile people who've lived here their whole lives are completely oblivious and want to sit on their fat asses and complain.

wow, you really got this thing down huh.. piece of shit - that's not the reason why "real" Americans are unemployed dickwad..

It's a lot more easier to give an illegal a job due to "cash only" pay versus full benefits and perks.. etc
I dont give a shit about med benefits when looking for a job.

It's also because some employers rather see what money they can save with doing more with less. Some companies are making record profits versus overhead costs and the economy.

This makes no sense. None.

If we are talking competition at the level of a day laborer/illegal immigrant, most jobs do not offer full benefits & perks and the fact that those would even come to mind are examples of exactly what I am talking about. Entitlement & ridiculous expectations.

Illegal immigrants aren't the only people in the world to get paid cash.

More importantly, if you find yourself at a dead end because the only job offers you get are for cash under the table & no benefits, you need to accept that you didn't put forth any effort in your adolescent years and this is the result. Its your fault, you can either sit on your ass and complain about how nothing is going your way (the american approach) or you can take the fucking job, bust your ass and try to find a way to move up from there (the immigrant approach).

One option works, the other doesn't.

loly Wrote:

Holy over head costs Captain Obvious!

Tha fuck you think companies are SUPPOSED to do? Strive to go under?

This is EXACTLY the mindset I'm talking about. Americans have gotten so lazy that they hold this idea that companies are here specifically to give them jobs and benefits and if companies don't do it, or make "record profits" they are somehow wrong.

Sense of entitlement.

If you see a company turning record profits in the middle of economic collapse, the first thing in your mind should be "how can I get a job there?" not "holding them in contempt for being successful.

Somewhere along the way, the mentality in this country has gotten fucked completely up. We hold success in disdain.

How do you maintain a capitalist society when the only successful capitalists are scorned?

If companies are so insistent on doing more with less, that means they need more productive employees who generate consistent results.

Become one of those.

If you do, someone will give you a job. Guaranteed.

Some people bust their asses and do whatever they have to do to earn a buck. Some don't. Right now, immigrants in American are by & large the ones doing whatever they have too, which is why they are the ones with the jobs.

For all these millions of Americans that are out of work and losing their homes and can't feed their kids or pay their bills, why haven't day laborer hang outs become overrun with middle aged white men?

There are thousands of people just in the NOVA area that are out there every single day putting money in their pockets being a day laborer but you don't ever see a bunch of middle aged white dudes doing that... you know why? Because it's "beneath" them.

The "do whatever it takes" ideology has been lost on multiple generations of Americans who have had it really, really fucking easy.

You can complain about fairness allllll day long but no one ever said life was fair.

a lot of people treat contractors like its a disposable job, you should always use contractors who are licenced and bonded, legal contractors work for years profecting there trade (just like collage) and when you hire a day laborer to do there job its a slap in the face. i dont want to have a underground economy or slave labor in my back yard and im sure you wouldn't want someone taking your job, ive been a contractor for 20 years and when i bid against a contractor who uses (day laborers ) its hard to compete. they pay no income tax , no overhead , and most importantly no workmans comp insurance. if a day laborer gets hurt on your property they can sue you and lien your property and you will have no defence. the people we are talking about use 10 times more social programs, school, hospitals, jail, parks and walefare and pay nothing into it and thats why are taxes, and healthcare cost so much . so next time spend a few extra bucks and hire an american contractor

Wow, I was looking to hire a day laborer from a local day labor center to pull the sticky willy growing rampant in my yard (a no skills needed task), and I could not believe the disgusting racism & nationalism.

It doesn't matter where someone is born. I'm willing to pay well over minimum wage, but I would have to pay SEVERAL TIMES MORE to hire a lawn service to do the same work. The fact that 'Americans' will not work hard for $10 an hour is the problem, not people willing to work hard, but too poor to spend all the money needed or wait the years it takes to become a citizen.

I bet most of you are Christian. Your Jesus would be disgusted by you.

+1. I've always tried to hire kids in the neighborhood to mow the lawn. I had one that was really conscientious for about 5 years, but other than that, despite a neighborhood full of HS age kids, no one wants the work, or if they accept it, they don't show up. Ended up hiring a service and actually found out I was paying more to the kid in the neighborhood than I could hire a service for.

I had a major kitchen and bathroom renovation recently, and I paid 10 day laborers 45 dollars an hour. They worked for 4 days/8 hours a day, which came to 14,400.00. I gave them 15,000.00 since they did such a great job. Materials were around 5,000.00. Altogether, I spent 20k. I had a similar project for another house i own and it cost me 30k because I used a "reputable general contracting company". They dicked around...took for ever to complete. The trick is to pay top dollar, but get the work done fast. 4 days for two fully rehabbed rooms was great.

$10/hour, feed them lunch, and give them a bit extra at the end of the day. thas it. If you need work that justifies more than that, you shouldn't be picking up a couple of amigos at the Home Depot.

I hired a few amigos recently to help me spread mulch, move my firewood, do spring cleaning, build a swing set, detail my car, put together my new grill, and stuff like that that. I end up paying about $100/day/laboror.

But I wouldn't hire these guys to do the backsplash in my kitchen.

The newest trend is for them to try and negotiate a 'per job' price. They will tell you they will work extra super hard and that they want a cost for the entire job.

I did this last time we did mulch at the house and it worked out okay but I already had a good idea of how long it would take. They did bust their asses for sure.

As a past contractor I can tell you, the smartest thing you can do as a good "Citizen", and savvy home owner is HOMEWORK!!!!! I know you don't want to find out you paid some ridiculous amount of money more than you had to, especially when you hired an "official contractor", licensed, insured, etc...and you ended up with a mediocre job that a laborer (illegal or not) could have probably done just as well. So now all you can think about is all that money your out of and the sinking, feeling that you have been taken advantage of. It really can feel like an insulting slap in the face. So much so, that the next time you have a job you have to hire out to someone, your gonna damn well end up being the one who's smiling at the end of the job. All you have to do is shop around, make calls, get estimates from numerous contractors, actually check their references and actually go look at some jobs they've actually done. Don't be a sucker. If you really want a good job, at a fair price, then do your homework and I promise you, you will find a reputable contractor that will do a good job that he and you will be proud of. The problem with most home owners is that they want to be assured of getting their moneys worth from a contractor but they really don't want to do any leg work to make sure they do. Then you get taken advantage of and become bitter, swearing your gonna get over on somebody the next time. Remember, as my Mother always told me, "son, you get what you pay for". So don't be lazy, if you don't want to be taken to the cleaners, whether it's because you paid less but got a shitty job, or because you paid way to much and got a shitty job, then just do your homework. DUE DILIGENCE

Offer 'em $10 an hour. Upfront them $20 and say the rest will be paid at the end of the day. At that time, tell them you'll head to the ATM to get their money and they should all hop in the truck bed for the ride over.

Then head to the Immigration Office and pull into the lot with horn blaring!

They'll scatter like roaches when the light comes on! ;)

Alternatively, drive into the Blue Ridge and force them out of the truck at gunpoint. This is the 'catch-and-release' method.

Aside from that, if these men and women want to earn an honest day's pay for an honest day's work and expect nothing from the state, and are not Cartel, let them be. When I see college kids standing in front of a store to work for whatever you will pay them, I will complain about about the non-leeches trying to feed their families.

You can't just hire somebody off the street without a general contractor, building contractor, etc. running the show.

Then, while they're working on the lawn, I like to go up to the second story of my house, and randomly point my Mannlicher-Schoenauer out the window at them, just like Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List.
