Washington-Baltimore Newscast

So what's the deal with WTTG starting a Washington-Baltimore newscast? You mean to tell me there isn't enough going on in a city of 5+ million to cover a 30-minute newscast? Does anyone here really give a rat's ass what is happening in Baltimore? Does anyone living in Baltimore really give a rat's ass about what is happening in Fairfax County?

Seems like Fox 5 is showing total disdain for the viewing public in order to save a few bucks on its newscasts.

washington DC's population is less than 600,000. Look it up. Washington Post just did an article about how Mayor Williams had to fight to get the official number THAT high...

I should have said metro area. The DMA for the DC media market includes all of the surrounding counties.

One could argue that with less than 1/8 of the population of the area living in the city, that the newscasts in our area are already "Suburban News, also featuring some DC news". So what differnce does it make if they throw in some Bltimore news? Plus, does channel five's signal not reach baltimore? I would watch a very snowy channel 5 when I was in college there..

Yeah, but B-more news stations broadcast alot of "suburban news" too, so we'd end getting more than just news from Baltimore city, we'd be seeing stories about stuff that happened in places like Cockeysville or Reisterstown.

I think this is a dumb idea.

Why don't we just add coverage of Delmarva and Richmond while we are at it. Sheesh.

I think the people of Pocomoke City, MD are yearning for news of car thefts and domestic violence in Herndon, VA, this is a good idea. I always wanted to see ads for a car dealership in Midlothian.

TheMeeper-

I think you make a good point. The natural tendency will be for the news coverage to focus on DC and Baltimore proper, with some coverage of the counties in-between DC and Baltimore. If this is the case, viewers in the suburbs outside of the DC-Baltimore I-95/295 corridor will really have no reason to watch Fox news. Seems like any cost savings will be offset by the smaller audience size for the two Fox stations in Baltimore and DC.

I can tell ya that. Not very much. In the winter, the population shrinks to 7,000.

With HDTV, snowy TV pictures are a thing of the past. Now, you either get the picture, or you don't.
