Johns Place on top of the hill. Great view from the roof top, and nothing says "classy" like canned beer.

I am curious about Jon's Place off Lee Highway. It looks like they have made a recent attempt at sprucing up the rooftop for the summer? I know from past posts they have vintage pinball machines which is cool enough

is this a regulars only spot? Or are they friendly and inviting to new patrons? No liquor, correct?

I've been there a few time, most recently about 2 years ago while in college. My impression was Jon will take any business he can get. The people I ran into were overall freindly "good ol'e boys", which says a lot considering I was just some uppity college kid. They had good deals on pitchers of beast to boot. I kind of prefer dive bars anyways.

For what its worth, i liked it better then Patriots.

I was at John's Place about two weeks ago for Friday happy hour. Yes, the place is a dive. I was in there with a preppy type shirt on. At first I felt out of place, but after a beer or two I got talking to the good ole boys(in their 50's) at the bar and they were very cool.

I wouldn't take a date there, but if your looking for a bar where you can drink beer and not have to worry about a dress code, this is the place. Perfect place for a bunch of plumbers after work.

John's place was actually up for sale back in 2005-2006. I wonder if he did sell it and the new owner kept the "ambiance", because it's nothing but class.

What about Kate's Irish Pub? I've never been there, I just know a person who works there.

see bridges has been around forever, but it is definately not ghetto like it used to be.. i go there on saturdays all the time, and there main bouncer guy is very strict on dress code.. lol its easier to get in a club than bridges sometimes.. they have a really good crowd, and its worth a second chance.. plus what other bars out here, have over ten pool tables, a wrap around bar, a dance floor, tvs all over the place and hookahs~!! bridges is the bar to be, especially on saturdays!

I wouldn't worry too much -- read the bolded names again and tell me that they aren't gay bars.

Watch out at Kilroys. Baby daddies have been known to get stabbed there.

Just came from John's Place (my 2nd and last time visiting). The food was gross, the bar was dirty, the kitchen from what I could see looked like it wouldn't meet code in any third world country. There was tons of cigar smoke in the air, so your clothes will be ruined. The bartenders expect huge tips from people and all they do is serve beer (no liquor). So what are you supposed to tip for? This is not a good place for families, college crowd, 30 y/o's or anyone normal. Basically, the crowd was a couple of old overweight guys smoking cigars mixed with some guys who looked like serious drug users/dealers. I will never go back here. Oh, there were some hispanic gang members playing pool and there friends were looking in my car window when I left. Think it can't get worse? It can, my tab was huge. Beers are the most expensive in Fairfax. Domestic beers are $4.00 and I'd assume that imports are at least $6.00. The upstairs is crappy. A lot of ants on the bar and obnoxious patrons who try and meddle in your business. Just a bunch of low lifes, no good looking women either. I'd pick patriots any day of the week over this dump and I like dives. What ever happened to Thursday's? That place was cool.

Kate's is a dive - not much of a vibe there at all. Mostly old guys who are regulars. I stopped in once and sat at the bar. The chick bartending acted like I was bothering her for asking for a beer yet she was yucking it up with the regulars. Definately went out if her way to make it unfreindly which I found weird since its a public bar where you would think they'd want new business,

Also, Kilroys is good. Big late afternoon crowd and every bartender is ugly but they all have huge cans and lots of cleavage showing. The food is below average but the beer is cold and the place is freindly.
