waste, fraud, and abuse in local government

What does Ed Long, the County Executive for Fairfax County, do that's worth $300,000 a year to the homeowners who pay his salary?

Isn't that more than President Ovomit is paid? Like or loathe Ovomit, he does have a bit more responsibility than any county executive. So how is our County Executive better qualified or more productive than the President of the United States?

$400,000
Since 2001, the president has earned a $400,000 annual salary, along with a $50,000 annual expense account, a $100,000 nontaxable travel account, and $19,000 for entertainment.

It's called Google. Try it sometime.

This reflects salaries from a couple of years ago, but it still may give you an idea of what other area jurisdictions pay.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/salaries-for-top-local-government-officials-vary-with-size-of-jurisdiction/2014/05/25/e3a3b91c-e12c-11e3-9743-bb9b59cde7b9_story.html

Whether they actually bring enough value to justify those salaries is another matter.

Running an operation as big as Fairfax County is actually a pain in the ass. You're not going get anybody to do it for minimum wage.

Plus, if Fairfax County was a corporation, $300 grand wouldn't cover the fuel for the CEO's private jet.

The previous County Executive, Anthony Griffin, left under a cloud. He landed at a nice job at Fairfax Water.

Ed Long is an egotistical hack. He doesn't reply to emails and he won't take calls from the members of the public.

People need to press the Board of Supervisors for increased use of the referendum process-especially on fiscal issues such as tax rates. The County would dearly love to pass a restaurant tax, but they know it would provoke outrage, so they talked about putting it up for a vote. Then they learned it would be roundly defeated, and they decided not to.

The two members of the school board, Patty Reed and Ted Velkoff, who pushed for special taxation authority for the schools were voted out of office. That's a good sign.

Exactly!

These 'tards who complain about every dime that the county government spends have absolutely no idea what it takes to manage a large, diverse organization or run a municipality.

Is there waste, fraud, and abuse in Fairfax County government? Of course! There is waste, fraud, and abuse in every sizable organization.

Can waste, fraud, and abuse be eliminated from Fairfax County government? Nope. It can, however, be monitored, controlled and minimized.

Conserva-tards!

LoLz!

You mean with a BOS form of Govt where No ones in Charge?? Because there's no Mayor?? No One in Charge that can hire and fire??

The heads of the county agencies run Fairfax govt. and they all have their different supporters on the BOS . The Co Exec and all the other deputies all are a puppet show. Yes men and women..

The John Geer case underscores that No One is In Charge in FXCO.

Don't worry bout all the taxes Cities in Va keep.. Or the money Fairfax sends down Richmond for them to give out to The Rest Of The State..Shell out some more bucks for those schools now suckers.

There is a huge difference between how large private sector companies conduct themselves and large government....one develops its budgets based on income and profitability and one develops its budgets based on expenses only.

Government management never has to worry about the income part of the balance sheet...they just raise taxes at will and the people have to buy the product no matter what.

Off topic, moron.

The topic is: Is $300 grand an excessive amount to pay the County Executive?

Hint: A Corporation of a similar size pays their Executive tens of millions of dollars a year.

And that pisses me off as a shareholder.

Really? What are these difference?

All budgeting considers revenues and expenses, idiot.

Right, because tax increases don't require approval by elected officials or voters. Oh, and tax increases are effective instantly.

Wow! You are far dumber than even I thought! lol.

It might be more that he doesn't reply to or take calls from ranting assholes. I know I wouldn't.

Direct democracy is pretty much the worst form of government possible. That's why we don't have it. Anywhere.

Perfect example. Virtually every other jurisdiction in the region has a meals tax. A meals tax in Fairfax County would allow those who don't live here to pick up part of the tax burden from those who do. Absent a meals tax, the Board will be under increasing pressure to raise real estate taxes. The woeful stupid shits are just too dumb to have figured this out.

Patty Reed was a Republican. She was crushed by a TJ graduate Democrat born in Argentina. Brave new world.

Clearly, city and county management is a growing field.

The smaller jurisdictions are now in the game as well, some shelling out $100K+ benefits and parachutes to their managers. $100K is a not a bad salary to live on in downstate Virginia. If you check out these folks credentials some just have BA's when they are hired with little experience. Others have a long track record.
