A homeless man has been arrested after police discovered a 15-foot-deep tunnel they say he has been living in.

Fairfax City police spokeswoman Sgt. Natalie Hinesley says 25-year-old Yosue Joel Rios was arrested Sunday on a charge of property destruction after digging the tunnel in Van Dyck Park.

Hinesley says Rios made the tunnel his home and camouflaged it by covering it with a large piece of plywood. She says officers discovered a pillow, hand-held gardening tools and other personal items inside.

Hinesley says employees from the city’s Department of Public Works filled in the tunnel Monday morning.

She told NBC Washington that “I haven’t seen anything like it. … He was studying several topics,” including the English language.

Rios, who was wanted for failure to appear on a traffic charge in Arlington County, was held without bond. It isn’t clear whether he has an attorney.

This right by a police station. Why would he choose this location?

(giving him benefit of doubt) he wanted to make sure he wasn't tempted to smoke/do drugs/drink...was probably a problem in other parks....and wanted to be sure he was left alone (from other homeless)

When I was a kid we used to dig forts like that in Roundtree Park. We usually dug a big pit then covered it with small fallen trees then a tarp or dropcloth then dirt, and then leaves to hide it. after a while the park police or a rival group of kids would find them and destroy them and we'd make another.

We found one someone else had made that was a tunnel dug into the side of a hill. We stuck a bunch of wood in it along with a couple gasoline cans from a neighbor's shed. Buh bye fort. Ah, the good old days...

And some dug a cave in a sand bank when I was a kid, it collapsed on them 2 died. And the Hombre is lucky the same did not happen but it does look like clay.

As far as a piece of plywood covering the hole .. What if Kilton the Fat Gun Show Hot Dog Lover stepped on it!! Hi-Speed ride baby!

DAJAX

Now I get to sue all you gringo's for defamation of character. Rest assured, you will be contacted by The Hispanic Caucus via permanently retained attorney.
I have MY RIGHTS! And my Diplomatic Immunity here! I can and will dig a home hole anywhere I please in this country! I am an illegal immigrant! If you don't like it, PAY HIGHER TAXES to stop me!
Besides, me and my brother amigo's ate being fed, clothed and given all sorts of help at The L@mb Center! Sometimes, they even rent me a hotel room for me and my 16 amigo's from el Salvadore and Honduras!
I needed to dig my hole home so when I do get illegal work, drug dealing, buying booze for the local school children with one of my 13 fake bought license I.D.'s that I got in 13 different state DMV's across this country, and get paid, I must send it all, every spare dime, to my private LARGE family estates. THAT ARE NOT TAXED AT ALL LIKE ALL YOU SUCKER GRINGO'S' PROPERTY! HAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

And those sucker gringo give me $cash$ and rentcme more hotel room for week or two!!!
HAHA!HAHAHAHA!HAHAHA!
VIVA el Slavadore!
La Casa de Maryland give me all the information I need to make sure I know how to get all help I need to raise plenty $cash$ to send to familia estates! See?

Back in the seventies and eighties there was a killer underground fort on the Annandale side of 495, dug into the hill side by the highway, just north of where the pedestrian bridge from Wakefield park crossed over the highway. Had a couple of rooms and some furniture in it. Got filled in/collapsed back I think in the late eighties. I only went in once to check it out, true stoner palace underground!
