Spectacular Meteor Shower Tonight 120 Meteors An Hour!

One of the most flamboyant meteor showers will rain shooting stars Sunday night, lighting up the night sky for up to 2 seconds at a time.

And lucky for everyone, the Geminid meteor shower will be visible in both the northern and southern hemispheres, NASA said. Many of the bright arcs can be seen for 1-2 seconds each.

"The Geminids started out as a relatively weak meteor shower when first discovered in the early 19th century," NASA said. "Over time, it has grown into the strongest annual shower, with theoretical rates above 120 meteors per hour."

Weather from NBC Storm Team 4 — Updated 12 p.m Dec. 13, 2015

More unseasonable warmth for Sunday and tomorrow as the strong ridge of high pressure maintains control of the eastern seaboard. Not only will it be warm, but there’s more moisture in the atmosphere than average for this time of the year and it will feel a bit humid. The record high for Washington today is 71 set in 1889 (obviously pre-dating the Washington Reagan National airport) but being so close to the cool waters of the Potomac, we officially may not break that record today, but many locations away from the rivers and the Bar will be quite warm. All this moisture will lead to more clouds and fog and drizzle tonight through tomorrow morning. A cold front will approach tomorrow afternoon and send a line of showers our way through tomorrow night. The cooler air will lag behind the front a bit and we won’t really start cooling down until Wednesday. Much cooler air will really return for the weekend, but that’s just by comparison; temperatures will just finally be closer to average for this time of year.

Abingdon. It was the estate of the heirs of John Alexander, for whom Alexandria is named.

Cloud cover all night so doesn't look like anybody in mid-east or east coast will see anything the next three days. Bummer!

Saw a bunch after it cleared up late tonight.

Probably the most that I've ever seen around here in that amount of time. About a dozen within a 5 minute period. Several before and after that.

Look to the North. Most were from overhead moving toward that general direction.
