Does anyone know if the 5A and 6A state championship games will be on cable TV again this year? If so, what channel?

I assume at the very least they will be available via Gameday and/or NHFS Network streaming. Although I haven't actually seen anything on that yet.

Gameday is also streaming (the same feed, I believe). They have a link/article on how to get the games on their website.

There is nothing on their website about the state final games.

As a Westfield football alum, I can tell you that this is NOT the case. We have hosted plenty of college coaches and recruiters including Joe Paterno (he stayed out of the locker rooms), Ralph Friedgen, Bud Foster, and a long string of D2/D3 coaches. If the WF coaches know a player has a goal of playing football at the college level they will honestly assess their talent and do everything they can to get you in front of college coaches. From there, it's up to the student to make a name for themselves through transcripts and film.

I would agree, when my son played coach Simmons reached out to the colleges my son had interest in attending/playing for. He was more than helpful in putting my son in front of coaches from some pretty high profile schools. But in the end, it's the player/parent responsibility to follow up and through. Remember, there are only 6.7% of high school football players that make it to play in college, 2.6% at the D1 level. So in a program like Westfield that's an average of 2-3 players on a team of 100. I think those statistics alone speak volumes of how well the Westfield coaching staff does with the kids they have play in the program. To be as consistently successful as the Bulldogs have been, year in and year out, especially under Simmons, that's amazing. If you then take into consideration the few D1 players that have come out of the program it backs up what most of us know, they do it right at Westfield. Just in Simmons tenure I think maybe there have been only 5-6 prior to this year. Anderson, Thrasher-Walker, Gray, Gibson, & Clancy all attended/ing D1 programs. Can anyone think of any others?

Georgetown is a D1 school. He committed quite early in August and probably could've received better offers if he waited. Eckerts also committed early but West Point is on the rise football wise.

Interesting comment about the Georgetown commit. I believe that high school athletes that are not pro-prospects should play their sport at the best possible school. You can't do much than Georgetown.

You're correct there, only better would be an academy school. They receive an Ivy league level education, best possible leadership training, have everything paid for, get paid in addition, and a full-time career upon graduation. Only catch is if the student/athlete can stick it out for the duration.....

Wow, touchy-touchy are we, what's the matter, didn't get the school you wanted for you or your kid.

Definitely not either, my kid played a little farther back in time, unfortunately didn't take the academy path, but he was happy so that's all that mattered.

My kid is a year from dealing with college choices but I'll let you know. An academy education is excellent. no argument. Just very biased to say it is the best. If you don't have kids at an academy then you are military yourself. Thank you for your service.

There are many fine choices when it comes to colleges and universities. I was just agreeing with the original poster that there wasn't a much better option than Georgetown. But the academy lifestyle is definitely not for everyone, nor is the commitment afterward. Good luck to you and your son/daughter, regardless it will be a memorable moment, unfortunately a bittersweet one as well.

And you are most welcome by the way..................

I was wondering if anyone knew why the 5A & 6A state championship games were moved to Hampton? It would seem that playing them in Charlottesville, or even Richmond at Spider Stadium would be the logical choice. University of Richmond would be perfect, beautiful stadium, seats 9-10K, state capital, etc. I guess either way one team would still have the potential of playing close to home depending on where the game was and who the contestants were. I was just wondering why Hampton, seems odd.....

It was mostly about money I think. The venues are awarded through competitive bids. And VHSL hasn't been doing so well.

I believe they selected Hampton U as part of a tribute to the high schools which have won 24 state titles between Hampton (17) & Pheobus (7). No other city has come close to the dominance. So I think it's a fitting tribute.

BTW is there even a stadium in Northern Virginia that could host the State Championships? Bazaar that there's no college football in NORVA.

They should put the game in Centreville cause CVHS and WHS have been the two most dominant programs in 6A since 2001.

1-6 in title games. And yeah, they basically do recruit. In fact, if you listen to that interview with Coach Thompson sitting on Gameday he pretty much admits it.

Top 5 NR 6A for next year

1. Westfield
2. South Lakes
3. Lake Braddock
4. SOCO
5. Centreville

The gap between 1 and 2 will be a lot bigger than it has been the past 3 seasons.

With OS graduating a lot, and the South weakening, I have Westfield taking the region.

Number of State Championship wins by starting QB

Sean Glennon - 1
Mike Glennon - 1
Rehman Johnson - 2

If someone told me this after the Westfield South Lakes game week 12 last year, I woulda laughed. Westfield is gonna miss Johnson. Noah Kim has big shoes to fill.

Wow. What an epic game. Again. Props to Oscar Smith - they would not quit. Again. I honestly felt bad for the OS QB and seniors - it's got to be tough to lose back-to-back in such heartbreaking fashion.

I repeat what I said earlier - Coach Simmons has actually exceeded Coach Verbanic's success @ Westfield. Look at the stats in his 6 seasons as head coach:

Regular Season Record: 54-6
Playoff Record: 20-4
Overall: 74-10

State Championships: 2
Northern Region Championships: 2
Northern Region Championship Appearances: 6
Concorde District/Conference 5 Championships: 5

Westfield won the states BECAUSE they are lucky enough not to have played Stone Bridge in final. SB would have rolled them again if they played.

Hell, if Westfield was in Conference 14, they might have gone winless!

Stupidity. Westfield never shows their full hand under Coach Simmons in the regular season. It's all about setting oneself up for the playoffs. Westfield does not necessarily play their best players in on both both sides of the ball or put together their best game plans for the regular season. I would not have bet against Westfield in a rematch with Stone Bridge.

And to be realistic they had a number of key starters out with injuries for the Stone Bridge and Briar Woods games. Like I said... enjoy those regular season wins while Fairfax County gets it done in the playoffs.

Kyle Simmons is a joke. His assistants carry him. Their offense would be sooo much better if he would only let his assistants do what they know.
He knows nothing about offense so he just continues on this tired path. He refuses to learn anything new in the past 20 years.
Defensively, he has great coaches as well but he knows defense so he lets them go. If he would let the offensive coaches do what they do Westfield would destroy everyone.
IN the end, hats off to them, as they have won yet again.

While I understand your sentiment regarding his conservative play calling I think you do not understand how things work at Westfield. He does let the coaches coach.

Westfield's success under his leadership is not accidental. I recall his detractors claiming Everett actually ran the team and they would fall apart this season after his departure.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is by far the most idiotic statement I've ever read. So, I guess that no team has ever had a bad game? No team has ever lost to an opponent in the regular season but still was able to put it behind them and improve? Yes, Stone Bridge did beat up on Westfield this year, just like Westfield did to Stone Bridge last season. It was one game, one game does not define a season. Last year Westfield lost to South County in the regular season then thrashed them in the playoffs. The year before Westfield lost to Lake Braddock in the regular season but then destroyed them in the playoffs. Don't define both teams season's off of one game because it was just that, ONE game. Westfield knows how to put bad games behind them and move on. Westfield knows how to get better as the season goes on. Westfield knows how to perform come playoff, and obviously Westfield knows how to win State Championships. Maybe Stone Bridge should take notes since they seem to not understand it only matters if you win the LAST GAME!!

Westfield is by far the best program in the State. When is the last time they had an off year? Year after year they post impressive records with a very few big time players. It's all about the coaching at Westfield. They have great coaches, who produce consistent winners. One can argue that Simmons first two teams, in 2011 and 2012 that lost in the Region finals, were better than the State Champ teams, but they weren't able to seal the deal. Simmons and staff have produced consistent winners and figured out how to win the big games.

Congratulations and Kudos to the Bulldogs!

Ok, congrats on the state championship. I don't like Stone Bridge one bit, but think before writing.

Stone Bridge SLAUGHTERED Westfield.

Briar Woods (last place in their conference) beat Westfield.

Say what you want, but Robinson outplayed and should have beat Westfield.

Point is, yes, they got better as season progressed, but 6A was weak this year.

Westfield doesn't beat Highland Springs if they happened to play. Truth.

Nor could they defeat Stone Bridge if they played yesterday.

What happened earlier in the season is IRRELEVANT to what would happen in the playoffs. The fact that you have to keep going back to that is proof you don't get it.

Westfield played Stone Bridge, Briar Woods and Robinson without a number of their best starters. They also did not play Jewell, Petrillo (injured anyway) and Cockrill both ways like they would start to work with later in the season and then rely on both ways in the playoffs.

I have a ton of respect for Stone Bridge and was rooting for them to take down the Springers. But cannot agree with you that Westfield could not or would not have beaten either of those teams in the finals. Strange how every time Westfield or Centreville win states it is a "down" year.

Funny, Westfield would lose, that's the same thing Oscar Smith had said the past two seasons, how'd that work for them?

Regular season doesn’t mean a thing other than seeding, once again, Westfield has been beaten by teams over the previous two season only to come back when it mattered and paste them in the game that counted.

Bottom line, Stone Bridge has won ONE title in 6 trips, Westfield is 4-4, the last two against a quality 757 team.

You really want to stick by your prognostication in a game that counts, my money is on the team that's PROVEN it won't choke.

But keep telling yourself that Stone Bridge is superior, it might take that rotten taste out of your mouth.........

Says you about a team that completed 1-8 passes for 2 yards and 2 interceptions in a clutch game. Says you about a team that let a D1 recruit QB beat them with the game on the line. Westfield's defense got the stop in crunch time against a D1 QB for the second year in a row. By the talk afterward it was obvious Stone Bridge won their state title in week 4. It was just another game for Westfield.

My question is where's Mr. 757? you know the guy who was all over this thread all season long. Boasting about Oscar Smith this and Oscar Smith that. About how whether it was Westfield or anyone else from the 703 area code they were going to be beaten up by the mighty Oscar Smith.

Please get this straight, once and for all, don't give me that 757 crap, we know how to play football in Northern Virginia. We have just as many quality athletes, just twice as many schools so they're spread amongst all the teams. Not just on one or two as is the case with OS & Ocean Lakes or whomever it is that is currently recruiting better than the next program.

The difference is the Northern Virginia player tends to be less boastful, they prefer to let their play do the talking. They also tend to be a little more disciplined, hence they are easier to coach and play together as a TEAM instead of a group of superstars.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not lumping everyone from the 757 in this category, but there are quite a few. After witnessing both recent 6A championships I've witnessed this in person. The 757 fans also seem to display the same swagger, trash talking and running their mouths off.

Yesterday I was amazed at how many Oscar Smith fans were sitting in the Westfield stands. Since there was plenty of available seats in the end zone and on the Oscar Smith side I assume they were in place to try and disrupt or intimidate the Westfield faithful. Most of them were running their mouths for the entirety of the game, like trash talking was going to be the difference between winner and loser.

In overtime coach Simmons from Westfield had his team switch ends of the field because of the numerous Smith fans in and behind the end zone area. When the teams moved to the other end amazingly there were a ton of Smith fans, all wearing jerseys so I assume parents, that were on the track along the edge of the turf. WTF, why were they there and how the hell did they get on the field? I thought that was for players, coaches, and officials, not fans.

But, as luck would have it, it was all for naught. Once again, the best of the 757 was beaten by the best of the 703. Good luck next year!

Let us be honest shall we. Only Westfield can beat the nigger-ball they play in the 757. Smith would have shoved the rock down Stone Bridge's pasty throats all day long. Westfield steps up when they have to - Stone Bridge just doesn't have the talent or coaching to run with the big dog nigs from the South. They are mean, fast and big and SB is small, slow and bit too any homos on the team.

Setting aside Honesty’s regrettable commentary, why CAN’T 5A North ever win states? 5A North has won only 3 of the last 31 championships and have lost 9 consecutive. I find it hard to accept Richmond and Beach *always* have the better teams. 6A North has won 14 of the last 31 championships and 3 of the last 4.

I think it is apparent that the better football in Richmond in particular is played at the 5A level. I thought Highland Springs was the best team in the State last year and would love to see a Westfield/Highland Springs game this year. L.C. Byrd is also a powerhouse year in and year out. Before the State split into these ridiculous 6 classifications I watched L.C. Byrd dismantle a pretty good Oakton team several years back. I also think the fact that there are only three regions and the Beach and Richmond essentially eliminate each other before they play the Northern Region champ is a factor. Match ups are a big part of football and some teams may match up better than others. Maybe the new format will help in that regard.

Did anyone else think the officiating was a little one-sided in 6A State Championship? Two calls I thought really impacted the game. (The kids should decide the game not the officials) The first was the pass interference that was not called when the Oscar Smith player clearly tripped #2 Eckert. The defender may not have intentionally tripped the WR, however he still tripped him. That interception gave Oscar Smith some momentum. The 2nd call, which had a HUGE impact on the game, was the “Horse Collar” 15 yard penalty on the last Oscar Smith drive. I guess because the play was right in front of the OS bench, they felt compelled to throw the flag and help continue the OS drive.

If Westfield had lost, those two plays would have been a huge topic.

Why did they switched ends in OT, was it because there were a ton of OS fans on the fence line?

oscar smtih - shon mithcell is baller. #4 and #8 were everywhere.

Did ayone see that run by WF Nolan Cockrill in the 4th? he was a freight train! lol. Is this dude a junior or sophmore?

Also the WRs frimpong and eckert had much more height than the cbs.Oscar Smith just didn't seem that many big guys.

I was confused on why they didn't try to go a field goal in the 4th quarter to ice the game.

With Johnson, Frimpong, and Eckert leaving, I just don't know how WF will repeat next year. Did the new QB even get any snaps in game this year?

anyone know where to get a full download of the game?

Did not think the “horse-collar” had to be called but it was not a “bad" call. Did not think the trip necessarily had to be called so I would not characterize that as a “bad” no call either. But they both did go OS way.

The thing that upset me was the flagrant holding by the OS offensive line that was allowed. #97 was clearly held right in front of the ref on the 2 point conversion. No call. And on OS 3rd down in the second OT there was another flagrant hold during Mitchell’s scramble. Laughably obvious. Right in front of the ref. Again no call.

#97 Cockrill is a junior so he will be back.

Either #15 or #10 will likely QB for Westfield next year. They both did get some varsity snaps but neither will have any meaningful varsity experience.

Westfield didn't go for a FG in the 4th quarter because it would have been close to if not over 50 yards, if they miss Oscar Smith would have had great field position. Anyone who has watched Westfield football knows Delaney is a tremendous kicker, the only weakness he has is accuracy. Last year in the championship game he missed 2 FG's if I'm not mistaken, they both very makeable. Also, the goalposts in college are narrower than high school so that doesn't help. Look, I love Delaney, he's the best kicker I've ever seen at the high school level. But he's going to UVA because he can kick the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs and he's a tremendous punter. I don't think they have any plans for him to be a FG kicker.

I agree with the poster above, the trip can't be called pass interference because the defender and received got their feet inadvertently tangled. The horse collar I'm not so sure about but body slamming a player to the ground usually gets the flag thrown. I though the biggest non-call was the left tackle who had ahold of Cockrill(#97) on the 2 point conversion. Cockrill had his arms outstretched and you could see the handful of jersey the Smith kid had in his hands. The worst part was the official was right there just yards away, amazing. That would have sucked if Westfield would have lost because the game should have been over at the conclusion of the failed 2 point conversion. No way does Cockrill miss that tackle, and that RB was not going to run through #97 like he did the defender draped around him going into the end zone.

Simmons switched ends of the field in OT because that one end zone was filled with Smith fans. It was just a little better at the other end but as I stated above how in the hell did all those Smith fans get onto the track at the other end. If you look at the film you'll see there are quite a few adults, all wearing Smith jerseys, standing on the track along the edge of the field. Some obnoxious photographer who was a Smith fan. clad in blue, directly under the goal posts. Where the hell was the crowd control, and what about all the Smith fans sitting on the Westfield side of the field, ridiculous.

I was impressed with the way the Westfield players and coaches handled themselves throughout. They were basically playing a road game, in a hostile environment, and with a few missed obvious calls possible some hometown refs. But the Bulldogs withstood it and persevered even under those less than envious conditions. That's a Simmons coached team for you, they don't ever seem to fall apart in the face of adversity.

In regard to the comment who does Westfield have coming back next year. They'll basically be like they are every year. They lose some really good players but have some really good ones coming up. As far as starters go on offense Cockrill, St. Germain, Cirillo, & Jewell off the top of my head. Asante, Burns, Kiley, Winesette, and Pickett who all got playing time will be returning. The coaches seem to be in love with Kim as the QB but Kiley is certainly capable of playing that position. The defensive side of the ball Steinhilber, Hinton, Divecchia, Morin, & McClain all started will be back. Sweigert, Clancy, Newborn & Menard all got playing time. Pretty solid group to build a team around, the biggest loss might be Delaney, field position is always key.

Frimpongs best game was when he destroyed the Robinson secondary, easily one of the most dominant performances this year by any NR player.

Westfield could've been as dominant as 2013 Centreville if they didn't have suspensions and had Johnson at QB the whole year. Just imagine Pearson behind that O-Line and Cockrill. Scanlon along with Frimpong and Eckert. Petrillo coming in every once in a while. They could've won every game by 5 TDs, Oscar Smith included.

I'm not so sure about that, the 2013-2014 team wound up having 7-8 D1/FBS scholar football players on it. Last year 1 player went D1/FBS, this year, Eckert for sure, Frimpong & Johnson maybe. Jewell could've possibly gone FBS but Georgetown is a great school. Next year I see only Cockrill as an FBS player. That's being a total realist at the two separate teams over a two plus year period.

I meant the 2013-2014 Centreville team compared to the 2015-2016 Westfield team.

But everyone who could've went D1 for Centreville did end up going D1. Westfield on the other hand... not so much. Players that could've went D1 for football on 2015 Westfield Football: Scanlon (basketball), Frimpong, Eckert, Pearson (suspended), Johnson, Cockrill, Petrillo (lacrosse), Jewell, Aiello (wrestling). And Westfield is definitely better coached than Centreville. The point I'm trying to make is, just because Westfield didn't have as many players to actually go D1 doesn't mean that they didn't have the same level of talent. Hypothetically, last years Westfield team, with Johnson at QB, Pearson at RB, and Scanlon at WR, would definetly match the talent of the Centreville team, because the Westfield group last year was much deeper than most teams, perhaps even the '03 and '07 teams. Not more talented but deeper. So I do think it's fair to compare 2013 CVille to 2015 Westfield in terms of what could've been at Westfield, not what actually ended up happening. I'm just saying that the Westfield team that fits all these hypothetical scenarios (no suspensions and Johnson at QB) could've enjoyed the same level of domination.

Holding sequence where lazy #78 tries to pull the jersey off of #93 on 3rd and goal at the 12. Ref doesn't call it and Mitchell ends up running for 9 yards. That's just crap. Everyone in the entire stadium saw that one.

The missed holding calls were bad, but one photo you should see occurs on the 2XP conversion with 7 seconds left to tie the game. I can't figure out how to post it, but if you want to see it Google "Virginian Pilot Smith versus Westfield" and look at the photos with the article.

The game should have been over in regulation with Westfield winning 21-19. On the 2XP, the Smith player's knee is fractions of an inch from the ground while dragging the Westfield tackler and the ball is at least a foot from the goal line. His knee would be down before he could extend his arms. With an official placed on that side on the goal line about 10 feet away and not one player to obstruct his view I don't know how he misses that. But with no instant replay it is what it is. If Westfield went on and lost the game on that missed call, that would have been horrible.

No. The Virginian Pilot has it from the other side of the field. You cannot tell in the Post photo.

Not to mention the Frimpong TD catch that was overturned by the ref that didn't have the best look at it. That was an awesome grab by Frimpong and the ref standing 5 yards away immediately signaled TD. Then another ref 15 yards away waves it off. Fortunately they scored on the next play anyway.
