Stringfellow Road

Any idea what the hell is going on Stringellow road. Media says its a water main break. I dont think it takes 3 days to fix a leak. Last evening they even had hazmat crews out there which in my memory would be the first for any county to emply hazmat crews to clean up a broken pipe.

Just got another alert that it is going to be closed for an extended period of time again due to fire department activity.

What the hell is going on???

From VDOT website:

Emergency Repairs Shut Down Section of Stringfellow Road
All lanes on Stringfellow Road between Point Pleasant Drive and Melville Lane are closed for emergency work. The two-lane, 1/4-mile section is closed while Fairfax County Water Authority repairs a ruptured water line and Plantation Pipeline repairs a gas line.

Motorists are being detoured around the work areas.

Fire dept./hazmat would be there b/c of the gas line.

How the hell do both lines get broken though?

Force from water-line rupture breaks gas line?

Are you on the EAN/CEAN paging network? I thought that this was kind of strange, too, but I guess that there could have been two lines involved. A ruptured gas line might require FD on scene, but I don't get why there would be HAZMAT crews (440?) standing by. Sounds fishy to me. Too bad that I can't access CAD from home anymore.

There are petroleum pipelines around here too. Some neighborhoods have GASOLINE running through pipes just under the grass where folks take their dogs to crap.

Wait 'til one of those suckers springs a leak and results in an explosion. It happened out in Wsahington State....gasoline leaked into a creek and when it ignited blew the the hell out of a town.

Ever wonder what that clear-cut strip of land is on either side of 28 between Braddock Road and Westfields Road is? It's a right of way for petroleum pipelines.

I did not live here then, but I heard stories from friends in the fire department about a petroleum line being struck in the late 1980s around Centreville. A lot pressure created a geyser effect and left a huge, highly flammable vapor cloud. I think that this was during the early stage of the building boom in that area.

I remember that, Lester, though not any of the details. I remember being shocked at the time to learn that gasoline is transported via pipeline. I thought petroleum pipelines just carried crude oil to refineries. Crude oil is nasty stuff, but not particularly dangerous (from a flammability standpoint).

Ever seen pics of burning oil wells in Iraq?

Of course I've seen burning oil wells in Iraq. They were ignited by explosives When oil comes out of the GROUND....so does natural gas. The crude oil in a pipeline contains no natural gas. It's like the tar they smear on roofs of buildings. Try to ignite that a spark with a spark or a flicked cigarette butt!

Crude oil on fire. I don't even know why we're arguing about this.

Because it is the internet and that's what we do!!!

I forget whether it is the flash point, combustible limit or someother factor, but every flammable liquid will burn at some point when the correct amount of heat is applied. My strongest memory from fire school, apart from watching someone fall 30' wearing full turnout gear, is seeing how hard it was to light a pot of diesel fuel with a road flare. While you would not even go near a small container of gasoline with such a prop, the diesel took a good long time to get burning.

Remember though that it's actually not the liquid that burns, but the gas given off by it.

see here for some information, very interesting

Crude oil does burn. Motor Oil does not easily (with a match/lighter). It shouldn't or you would have to change your oil every 5 miles. Diesel and Jet fuel do not easily (with match/lighter). Gasoline does. Example on link I put above:

"Diesel has a Flash Point of [120 F], [gasoline] [-40 F]. If you throw a lit match into a bucket of diesel at room temperature you get a wet match but if you throw a lit match into a bucket of [gasoline] at room temperature you would get a major fire."

There are loads of oil pipelines through our area. The orange signs are crude oil or something barely refined that go from Louisiana to New York. Yellow signs (stringfellow road) are more refined, maybe gasoline. And then there's natrual gas all over the place.

Oh yeah, Colonial Oil or something like that is going to build a jet fuel pipeline sometime soon. That would carry Jet A/JP-8.

I've heard of used motor oil being mixed with diesel fuel for burning in diesel engines.

This is a very common practice....a diesel engine (once running) will burn almost anything, including cooking oil from McDonalds. My boat is powered by two 8V-71 Detroit Diesels and when I first got it, I was reading the shop manual, and was amazed to read: "disposing of used crankcase oil in your Detroit Diesel's fuel tank is not recommended". I would have never thought of doing such a thing! But I have since found that a lot of people do it with no ill effects. BTW, larger diesel engines hold a lot of motor oil....8 GALLONS in each of mine. Compared to the 4-6 quarts in a typical cars' gasoline engine.

I think we were talking about crude oil burning because of the hazmat team presence on Stringfellow Rd....and the pipelines nearby. Suffice it to say that most petroleum products are very hard to ignite....gasoline being the obvious exception.
