Why not ask him instead of posting here where nobody has a clue?

Probably a volunteer. Lots of people working in FCPS libraries are unpaid volunteers.

He seems like a clean freak, the Hispanic that was next to me in the computer area left some soda behind and he threw it away and push in his chair.

Libraries are now more or less "community centers", thus attract all kinds of visitors from the street beyond the "readers" type. The cop is there to maintain security...

Fairfax County Police have been at the Chantilly Library for years. They are there to ensure the public's safety and keep homeless people from camping out in the Library. It has got to be boring as hell and I am sure he shelves books and cleans up after ass-hats who cannot do it for themselves just to keep himself busy rather than just standing there. My daughter used to get tutored there and he would give me the hairy eyeball the first few times I went to pick her up as I would walk in and just stand there waiting for my daughter. I am sure I looked totally out of place. Once he saw me a couple of times and figured out what I was doing he never paid a bit of attention to me again. I appreciate the service they provide to the patrons of the Chantilly Library. Beats the hell out of the shithole that is the Reston Regional Library.

Actually I've wondered the same thing. I see a full uniformed cop in here every visit to this library. I asked a staffer the other day and she said it was for the high school students who come in here from across the street (Chantilly HS), as the cop arrives around the same time they arrive. There are also plain clothes officers in here, too! I think there's more to the story. There must be (suspected) gang activity. Weird. Has NOTHING to do with "homeless" for the clueless poster; if it were, cops should be at the Fairfax Regional Library in FFX City--ions of noticeable homeless and mental illness in there.
