A new Virginia ABC store is set to open in University Mall, Fairfax (Store 393), according to Kathleen Shaw, Virginia ABC public relations manager. The lease is fully executed and it is expected to open sometime in January 2016.
Headquartered in Richmond, VA, Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) currently has more than 350 store locations throughout Virginia.
The new ABC store is strategically located directly across the street from the main GMU campus, next to restaurants and shops frequented by GMU students.
"We know that alcohol is a major part of the college experience for many students, and this new store will serve them well," said one. "We expect this store will significantly reduce the number of students who are forced to go all the way to old town Fairfax and beyond to imbibe. Bringing their purchases back to campus provides alternative options." He also said he hoped the new ABC store would reduce the number of drunk driving citations as the store was only a short walk from the GMU dorms.
Neighbors to GMU were unavailable for comment. One county staff member noted that decisions by the state are not subject to Fairfax County or City of Fairfax review and that no hearings would be held. "This is a state decision based on market analysis." GMU has been steadily growing in population over the past decade, including the building of many new dorm spaces.
