New Liquor Store to Serve GMU Community
Posted by: VA ABC Board ()

A new Virginia ABC store is set to open in University Mall, Fairfax (Store 393), according to Kathleen Shaw, Virginia ABC public relations manager. The lease is fully executed and it is expected to open sometime in January 2016.

Headquartered in Richmond, VA, Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) currently has more than 350 store locations throughout Virginia.

The new ABC store is strategically located directly across the street from the main GMU campus, next to restaurants and shops frequented by GMU students.

"We know that alcohol is a major part of the college experience for many students, and this new store will serve them well," said one. "We expect this store will significantly reduce the number of students who are forced to go all the way to old town Fairfax and beyond to imbibe. Bringing their purchases back to campus provides alternative options." He also said he hoped the new ABC store would reduce the number of drunk driving citations as the store was only a short walk from the GMU dorms.

Neighbors to GMU were unavailable for comment. One county staff member noted that decisions by the state are not subject to Fairfax County or City of Fairfax review and that no hearings would be held. "This is a state decision based on market analysis." GMU has been steadily growing in population over the past decade, including the building of many new dorm spaces.

You need an id to shop there, and Virginia ids after 9/11 are not easy to fake.

How long before the ABC goon squad beats the shit out of some kid? You KNOW they'll have this store staked out.

I can feel my tax dollars being pissed away to pay judgements against the goon squad already.

No controversy here.

But try to stick a gun store in University Mall and see what happens.

I wish someone would post an ad on Fairfax Underground for a place where I could buy a fake id.

Such a non-issue.

A Giant has been in University Mall since inception and there used to be a High's/Asian Convenience store in the same spot as the ABC before that for buying beer/wine. Any 'goon squads' would already have been there.
And like the article says there has already been one about 1/2 mile down University Drive.

Your precious tax dollars aren't being wasted any more than usual.

Yo, chicken-scratcher! Is that the same as or different from...

"ABC's got to serve all the 18, 19 and 20 year old GMU students plus neigboring Robinson High school students."

Can't buy the hard stuff at Giant or a convenience store.

No shit, Sherlock.
That's why I said, "There has already been one about 1/2 mile down University Drive."

Yeah we only had to pay Elizabeth Daly 212 grand. That's a steal for what the goon squad did to her.

And if you think the goons learned anything their lesson, you're even dumber than you appear.

So you think they shouldn't open up a new ABC store because 'we only had to pay Elizabeth Daly 212 grand.' from 'goon squads'? This happened in Charlottesville, not Fairfax.

ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement (or as you say 'Goon Squads') has 9 regional offices. So are you so paranoid to think they ALL collude to wrongfully arrest college students?

Keep on derpin' in free world! Watch out for those 'goon squads', Cletus.
