The Myth of the Good Guy With the Gun
Posted by: Annonomeister ()
Date: December 04, 2015 05:29PM

"It’s an intuitive and appealing idea—that a good guy with a gun will stop a bad guy with a gun. We can imagine it. We see it in movies. At least 80 million Americans have gone into the gun store, laid money on the counter, and purchased that fantasy. And yet it rarely plays out as envisioned. Is it because there aren’t enough guns? Is it because the guns aren’t allowed where they are needed? Or is there something else wrong with our aspirations to heroism?

Speaking Friday on CNN Newsroom with Carol Costello, perennial gun rights advocate John Lott said, “My solution for these mass shootings is to look at the fact that every single time, these attacks occur where guns are banned. Every single time.”
That’s neither true in general nor true in this instance. The FBI tells us that active-shooter scenarios occur in all sorts of environments where guns are allowed—homes, businesses, outdoor spaces. (In fact, there was another mass shooting the same day as the Oregon massacre, leaving three dead and one severely wounded in a home in North Florida.) And Umpqua Community College itself wasn’t a gun-free zone. Oregon is one of seven states that allow guns on college campuses—the consequence of a 2011 court decision that overturned a longstanding ban. In 2012, the state board of education introduced several limitations on campus carry, but those were not widely enforced.

School policy at UCC does ban students from carrying guns into buildings except as “authorized by law,” but at least one student interpreted his concealed handgun license as legal authorization.

John Parker Jr., an Umpqua student and Air Force veteran, told multiple media outlets that he was armed and on campus at the time of the attack last week. Parker and other student veterans (perhaps also armed) thought about intervening. “Luckily we made the choice not to get involved,” Parker told MSNBC. “We were quite a distance away from the actual building where it was happening, which could have opened us up to being potential targets ourselves.”

Parker’s story changed when he spoke to Fox News' Sean Hannity. Instead of saying he “made the choice” not to get involved, Parker said school staff prevented him from helping. Breitbart and other right-wing outlets are making the case that, if only there had been more armed students on campus, one of them might have been able to make a difference. Ideally, there would be so many guns on campus (one in every classroom? one for every student?) that gunmen wouldn’t even attempt a school shooting."

The Politico writer, like most of the press, selects only the facts that support their viewpoint. Thus, the terrorist attack in Garland, Texas on May 4. Press reports state that an armed citizen fired at and hit the terrorists.

The score ended up terrorists: 0 victims. Good guys: 2 terrorists.

Compare that to France, that has strict gun control laws. None of the victims could defend themselves.

Gun control only takes guns from the good guys, making them an easy target for the terrorist.

We are supposed to rely on racist cops for protection? They shoot black babies for fun and then high five each other and laugh.

Me and my fellow anti-racist Americans will defend ourselves, thank you very much.

Racism is bad. Cops are all racist. Therefore all cops are bad. Therefore average Americans must be armed to protect ourselves from criminals and cops.

Do You think "The Liberal Left Wing Media" will report any Positive stories on legal firearms use.. All they want to print is negative Propaganda the gist of which is Bullshit. and Lies..

PKB, son -- the Garland charlies were shot by an off-duty cop. That's not a "citizen", it's a LEO, on-duty or not.

If you want real protection keep a rolled up copy of the Brady Bill in
your pocket. If threatened, hit them over the head with it. It really
works.

On another note, the main stream media doesn't focus on the viral black "nigga" music that glorifies demeaning women and promoting violence within their communities. Bunch of fucking savages. Then whenever there is a shooting amongst the blacks, Obummer and the rest of the libtards start jumping up and down calling for more gun control to stop the violence. And you wonder why whites want to remain armed?

............ 99.65% of gun owners are cowards. The mere fact that they own and carry guns proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are in fact cowards. If by chance one of these so called "good guys" winds up in a active shooter situation they will simply piss their pants and try to hide or run away pushing women, children and elderly people out of the way as they go. That's just the way it is.

Typically, they RUN AWAY by claiming the shooter had a "mental illness" all along, and then they blame "liberals" for not having noticed. The day before the shooting of course, the gun-fucks were all up in arms, defending the guy's right to purchase as many guns and as much ammo as he wanted. This is how totally fucking stupid these hopeless in-bred losers actually are.

No. Pictures of either guns or Godzilla are not a threat. Actual guns or Godzilla would be a serious threat. All living persons would be well advised to run away from either one if they had a desire to remain a living person.

Sounds like something "True the Vote!" would say. In other words, that's incomparably stupid! What upsets ALL rational people is the staggering and totally needless toll of death and mayhem that guns are responsible for in this country every year, as well as the meathead-in-the-sand, who-cares attitude of gun-owners -- so-called "people" who, out of simple fear and stupidity such as that betrayed in your own feeble post -- are willing to do EXACTLY NOTHING to see the awful price that society pays for their little toys reduced.

Sez The $$ Talking Heads.. The RETREADS .. FORMER This ..FORMER That.. TERRORIST EXPERTS... But they are not telling us the Real NEW WORLD problem Right Here In The USA!

And Here It IS!

These Terrorists have for many years used bombs and other chicken methods to kill people, look at all the buses bombed , all the things blown up in the Middle East like in Israel , or Irag. And here at home the Boston Bombers, the chicken shits used a bomb too.. Sneaky and Chicken.

But that's changing.. With the Armed gunman attack at Charlie in Paris and Now this latest attack. They are now are attacking.. With weapons.

And these attacks all were at "Soft Targets" and there's millions of them here.
And they don't need full auto guns or anything special. F gun controls, they are strict as hell in Europe but look what they did.. They can smuggle anything over here.

I LOL...look to Democrats to "Keep Us Safe" More "Gun Free Zones" AKA "False Hope Zones". too bad the French did not have a "No Guns Allowed" sign on the concert area. That would have stopped them in their tracks .. at least that's what Democrats will tell you..

I predict that NO Attacks will occur in some parts of TEXAS.. those terrorists are not that stupid..They would be turned into Mince Meat really quick..

In NOVA however. You spin the wheel and you takes your chances. There's only but so many TEXANS to go around..They cant be everywhere!

Now Can every one think of a "Soft Target" ?? A Place where you can be a "Sitting Duck" .. Round this area?? Even some of the French said the attack in Paris was like "Shooting Fish In A Barrel"

I can think of many .. And Im not going to tipster them out and let them know. And neither should Anyone Else! In WW2 "Loose Lips" Sank Ships.. Today Loose Lips could unleash an attack. Keep it Cool..And If SHTF I just hope there's some one round with a CCW that can keep em at least down or stopped. And if SHTF remember we are all Americans.. despite our political differences or in the case of some Democrats and most Liberals , their hate..

Be Safe out there.. And we will..but be wise and aware of what's going on around you. See something Odd let the cops know..

I pity those who may have to "Shelter in Place" .. Lord!!

Typical liberal answer to everything: take away individual liberty and rights in order to address any problem. The government will take care of us and, hey it they don't, you'll be dead so don't worry about it.

This goes for libs in both parties. Fat Christie's desire to spy on everyone and violate the 4th Amendment is no different than the OP's desire to take away everyone's guns and violate the 2nd. Enemies of the Constitution reside in both parties.

There is no such thing as an unfettered right. They all come with responsibilities, limits, and restrictions, as anyone with an actually functioning brain would have figured out a long time ago. You're a total menace here. You should go surrender to authorities and ask to be placed in protective custody for the well-being of yourself and who knows how many others.

I think it's odd that some refer to the "myth" of the good guy with a gun yet fail to recognize that the vast majority of these shootings are stopped by police.

Are police not the most effective example of a "good guy with the gun?"

Snark about police shootings aside, none of the cops who have apprehended or killed any of these mass murderers did so unarmed. And the mass murderers who have committed suicide didn't do so because someone yelled loudly at them.

It's hard to have a rational debate about these issues when folks on both sides are so committed to spinning every fact to their benefit.

There is nothing at all odd about it. These are low-grade NRA-programmed stooges we are talking about after all. They have no independent critical thinking skills of any sort. These are the same morons who were told that tax cuts for the rich were a good idea and that Saddam had tons of WMD and was just months away from developing a nuclear weapon. They bought that crap as well. This is just how terminally dumb they are.

Al capone gave turkeys to poor families at the holidays, and you can't actually HAVE this discussion after putting "police shootings" aside. It's like starting off a discussion of the Nazis with the sentence "Snark about the holocaust aside...".

> It's hard to have a rational debate about these

From our unspun facts department: There are more than 30,000 gun-related deaths in this country every year. There are on the order of 200,000 gun-related injuries serious enough to require treatment at an ER. Because of the way bullets tumble and ricochet after entering the body, GSWs are among the most damaging and hence expensive of all injuries to repair. While we gain nothing good from guns, we all pay through the nose to fund this colossal waste of valuable medical training and resources. See how you can spin that back.

Your stats are way off. Even using an anti-gun website's data, there have been around 12,000 deaths and 24,000 injuries in 2015, and that data is as of today. I doubt there will be 18,000 more deaths and 170,000 more injuries in the next 26 days to justify your stats.

http://www.gunviolencearchive.org

Even last year, the numbers were about the same. Gun homicide rates have been going down, with the raw number down 6% and the rate down 16% over the last twelve years and the rate down 49% from it's peak in 1993.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2014/jun/16/facebook-posts/viral-meme-says-gun-homicides-are-down-49-percent-/

As for the cops killing people issue, like I said, snark aside, if you are unwilling to defend yourself, having a cop with a gun is necessary, isn't it?

There were no ISSUED weapons carried on base other than those of on-duty military police.

You're an idiot who obviously never served in the military. You can't even carry your weapon TO work. Dyess AFB is the first base to allow weapons to be transported to and from work in POVs.

So the 2009 shooter killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in Texas and in a place crawling with armed military police. Then -- less than five years later -- another shooter killed 3 others and wounded 12 in the same backward state and in the midst of the same swarm of armed military police. Supposed "good guys with guns" seem to INFLICT a lot more damage than they manage to PREVENT.

I didn't read a single post above.

I just read OP's whimsical Subject Line.

Anyway, my house is safe. OP's house, on the other hand, is not safe.

You see, when a criminal attacks OP, he'll get on his cell phone (or try, if he's not already beaten down), and then the police will arrive about 5-30 minutes later.

By that time, what's left of OP will be settling to room temperature.

I will not stand for that. Not only do I not rely on the police, I don't trust them.

Look at all the videos, from here in Fairfax County, to Chicago, to Los Angelse, to Oakland, etc. Police are liars. They lie to keep their jobs, and their pensions.

So, Myth Guy, I'll just do what I gotta do. And, I pray for the safe being of anybody who is with you who you should be protecting, instead of being the weak liberal progressive that you are.

The base isn't crawling with military police. There are few on duty at any given time under normal circumstance and it's a big place.

That would be a bad guy with a gun inflicting the damage in yet another area where carrying weapons is restricted. Which is a big part of why they select such places.

No, he hasn't been. There were no such findings. Carrying personal weapons on base was at the time and is prohibited.

I would want one. While the "gun-nut" is shitting all over himself and getting shot at, I would help a few innocents and myself escape. Survival of the fittest.

Both shooters were on-base military personnel. AKA, heroes fighting for our freedoms. They killed people where they happened to be. All this despite the transparently lame-ass lies and feeble excuses that you are trying throw at the situation.

And if you had actually read the post-slaughter army inquiries, you would have known that out-of-control carry of personal weapons was found. You really don't have to play dumb here, you know. It's just readily apparent, no matter what you do.

A certain type actually believes that guns will turn them into somebody. Just like having ink injected under one's skin. But for all their phony Hollywood bravado, your typical gun-nut is just a dirty little coward still trying to make up for having always been picked last for kickball in grade school. The fact that they were always first in the cafeteria line when hot dogs were on the lunch menu doesn't seem to console them any. I don't know, but the odds that I'll be threatened or killed by a terrorist, or an armed robber/killer, are pretty fucking low. I think I'm more threatened by morons with guns, bunch of would be heroes, shooting up the restaurant or movie theater that I'm in.

Friday after thanksgiving, a gun moron was getting out of his car outside my office building in Old Town Alexandria and shot himself in the leg. Look it up if you don't believe me. He could have shot a passerby just as easily as himself. I feel really protected by morons like that.

Thanks, gunlover-tard. I'll be thinking about those around you, too, (what's the point of praying to that which does not exist?) and how your being armed endangers them. Did you know:

- Gun-owning families risk suicide, murder, and accidental death rates far higher than those who do not own guns?

- There are four accidental shootings, eleven suicide attempts, and seven murders/assaults for every use of a gun for in-home self-defense?

- There is at least one unsecured gun in nearly half of all homes with kids and guns?

- In an experiment, of the eight to twelve year-old boys who found a gun, 1 in 3 pulled the trigger.

Fact: Gun sales are up while gun ownership is shrinking.

- Slightly more than 1/3 of Americans own a firearm.

- Four out of five gun owners are men, who each own about eight guns.

It's like knowing CPR and first aid. It's like having a set of jumper cables or a fire extinguisher. It's like wearing your seat belt or like looking both ways before crossing the street. It's a tool and a skill set that would come in handy in an emergency. It's common sense and accepting that there is a personal responsibility for my own safety, and that actions I take can directly influence my own safety.
It's because I don't want to rely on a call box, or a police officer happening by. It's because a police officer will catch the person after the crime has been committed, but won't prevent it. It's because my life, and the lives of the people I love isn't something I want to trust to random fate.

We're all more than well-accustomed to the need and resulting ease with which gun-tards resort to lying through their teeth in desperate defense of their precious little toys. The simple facts however are that official inquiries into the Fort Hood shootings cited the fact that soldiers were roaming about the base with personal weapons. Neither they nor mobs of armed MP's were able to protect anyone from anything of course. Guns, after all, increase your personal risk. They do not reduce it.

Myth #6: Carrying a gun for self-defense makes you safer.

Fact-check: In 2011, nearly 10 times more people were shot and killed in arguments than by civilians trying to stop a crime.

- In one survey, nearly 1% of Americans reported using guns to defend themselves or their property. However, a closer look at their claims found that more than 50% involved using guns in an aggressive manner, such as escalating an argument.

- A Philadelphia study found that the odds of an assault victim being shot were 4.5 times greater if he carried a gun. His odds of being killed were 4.2 times greater.

Myth #7: Guns make women safer.

Fact-check: In 2010, nearly 6 times more women were shot by husbands, boyfriends, and ex-partners than murdered by male strangers.

- A woman's chances of being killed by her abuser increase more than 5 times if he has access to a gun.

- One study found that women in states with higher gun ownership rates were 4.9 times more likely to be murdered by a gun than women in states with lower gun ownership rates.

Keeping guns in the home does not protect your loved ones. It puts them at additional risk. If you want to protect them, invest the money you waste on guns in a decent home security system. Active and passive systems that introduce delay are very effective at prevention, whether they are sophisticated enough to call police or not. And remember that one of the things that thieves most like to steal is guns. Guns to thieves are like sugar to sugar-ants. And do you know what percentage of these home break-ins you fear so much is committed by persons known to the occupants? Maybe forget about the guns and just do a better job of choosing your friends and neighbors. Gun-nuts for instance would be a poor choice.

Myth #1: They're coming for your guns.

Fact-check: No one knows the exact number of guns in America, but it's clear there's no practical way to round them all up (never mind that no one in Washington is proposing this). Yet if you fantasize about rifle-toting citizens facing down the government, you'll rest easy knowing that America's roughly 80 million gun owners already have the feds and cops outgunned by a factor of around 79 to 1.

Misleading. Gun ownership has expanded greatly. There are 100s of millions of more guns and 10s of millions of new gun owners since the 70s.

What your (as usual) deceptive stat is based on is the crappiest of survey data regarding whether people have a gun in the home. The reason for the difference in *percentage* isn't because there are fewer homes with guns. On an absolute basis there are millions more. It is because there has been a large increase in the numbers of *households* with more single- and female-headed households than there were in the 70s.

Also, you appear not to recognize that 20% of gun owners being women is a significant increase. It's now getting closer to 25% with women representing the largest increase in ownership and carry permits. Minority women in particular. They're also much more likely to buy a gun for personal protection (vs men more for sporting purposes) and to carry their weapons.

Politico is about as far left as The Economist. These are proponents of MOR, pro-establishment views, eschewing the notions of either extreme.

Does it hurt to be so stupid? It must be frightening for you to live in world that you don't understand. I pity you and, if there were a god, I would pray for you.

Hey, he spelled passivism correctly! Though, it's a bit unclear if he was actually going for that or pacifism.

I would guess his fear hurts more than the stupidity. BOO!!! THE GOVERNMENT IS COMING FOR YOUR HOME!

That's Only because Democrats established "Gun Free" False Hope Safe Zones that kept the Good Guys and Gals Guns at home ..Because they are Law Abiding citizens..

At , San Ysidro Ca., Luby's Café in Texas, Va Tech. Sandy Hook, S.B Ca.. every place that's been shot up..

Lubys Café Massacre https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luby%27s_shooting

The law had been campaigned for by Suzanna Hupp, who was present at the shooting where both of her parents were killed. She later testified that she would have liked to have her gun during the shooting, but said, "it was a hundred feet away in my car." (She had feared that if she was caught carrying her gun she might lose her chiropractor's license.)[12] She testified across the country in support of concealed handgun laws, and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1996.[14]

That's Now NuffAlready..

Never run out of spin.

Guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people - quite often by accident.

The most important day in your life is the day some gunlover-tard accidentally kills you

Only brain-dead gun-tards are capable of the absurd amounts of simple stupidity necessary to believe that "Gun Free Zones" were enacted out of a conviction that gun-crazy criminals would respect them. They were enacted to create extra levels of punishment for those who commit gun crimes in those designated areas.

And since you yourself do seem to be just that stupid, I'll note that the law exempts all those who are licensed or authorized to carry a weapon in such zones. If you want, you can license and authorize all sorts of "Good Guys and Gals" (gag) and their guns to be wandering around inside schools and in other such areas. People haven't really done that much because unlike you, they are not fucking stupid.

Reaching for a weapon on that one far-fetched day when you are confronted by an armed criminal is an extremely good way to get yourself killed. On all the rest of the days of your life, having a gun in the home will not protect you, but rather make you more likely to die via all of suicide, homicide, and accidental shooting. Guns do not reduce your risks. They increase them. By a lot.

See you soon.

Got me!

There are some truths in the graphic, Honduras does have the highest murder rate, but Switzerland is really low but not the lowest. And, no outright ban in Honduras nor a requirement to won in Switzerland.

It was a great graphic though, thanks for saving me the embarrassment of posting it on my FB page.
