Why are the parents from Mantua such Snobs? They are all much more above average than the rest of us in the Woodson Pyramid - just curious why they all seem to think that is true.

Mantua is an ugly, overgrown, outdated and overpriced shithole infested with liberal hypocrites who don't maintain the homes. Might have been a nice place in the 1960s, but now it sucks.

The ignorant and talentless are ever envious of those who have sped past them on the highway of life. Go back to Culmore, losers. It's all you've ever earned.

Is the soil in Mantua still contaminated with petro chemicals and gasoline from the spills and leaks from the tank farm?

I remember hearing that homes in that area were almost worthless due to the toxic situation.

From 1996

A closer look revealed that the fuel in Mantua had come from the portion of the farm operated by Star, a partnership between the Saudi government and Texaco...

Nobody will say exactly how long it will take to rid the neighborhood of all the underground oil. County health officials and fire marshals rely on a rule of thumb: In the first 20 years of the cleanup effort, only 10 percent of the hydrocarbons now in the soil will be removed or broken down.

Star doesn't dispute that estimate.

"The sad truth is that the environmental community and industry are finding that it's virtually impossible to restore contaminated areas, once they've been contaminated, to a pre-contamination condition," says Epstein. "That's been a real surprise to a lot of people, a real disappointment."

My friends in the Pedeo ONC department at Fairfax say they see a lot of kids from Mantua. I wouldnt live at any but the highest elevations there below the petrolium tank farm.

Yeah, you can never be too careful when dealing with "petrolium".

Used to skate at the Fairfax Ice Arena and now drive past the tank farm sometimes before or after a visit to First Watch or SFW, By the way, you should consider copying and pasting the big words until you become familiar with them.

I was at Mantua Elementary recently. The lower level smells like mold. I couldn't work there with my allergies. The teachers buy dehumidifiers to run in their classrooms. If you leave papers out overnight they are damp the next morning. It is a bad place to go to school or to work if you have allergies. If my kid went there I would not be pleased.

Living in that area will fuck you up.

Look at what's happened to Connolly.

I believe you have a case of the vapors.

No, they don't.

No, they aren't. They are the same in the morning as they were when you left them the previous evening.

Why would anyone care about what displeases a self-absorbed ranting liar?

Yes. It's still seeping into some basements, and is just below the surface in some lawns.

The real issue is the jump in childhood cancer and autism in Mantua. No one knows whether the multiple chemical spills in Mantua are to blame, but something is doing it.

"According to some Mantuans, the oil that invaded their neighborhood brought something more nefarious than a stench and a big hassle—it brought disease. Although there is no hard evidence to support their claims, there is a growing file of anecdotage: At least 16 current and former residents link their bouts with cancer to Star's leaky holding tank. Thirteen women in the community blame the poison for birth defects in their newborn babies. Cardiologist Dr. James Lamberti treated so many Mantuans for shortness of breath that he offered a free health screening to hundreds of community residents. Around 30 percent of the patients he screened showed symptoms of asthma, a rate several times the national average.

It's all a big coincidence, according to a study performed by a research panel operating under the auspices of the Virginia Department of Health (Lamberti was excluded from participating in the study; he declined several interview requests for this story). The state-chartered study, which was released this past January, found no link between the spill and the rash of ailments among Mantuans. "There is no current or likely future public health threat from human exposure to the petroleum hydrocarbons from the plume," the researchers concluded. They went on to recommend, bizarrely, "against conducting any new health study to monitor" the impact of the spill. The recommendation hardly surprised Mantua residents, since Star paid for the study." http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/11474/crude-awakening

No, it isn't.

To the extent that it can be shown to exist at all, it's statistically insignificant.

Fed up with burger-flipping, eh? Why not apply for one of those GS-15 jobs now. They sound like a good gig!

After the oil spill, many people sold their homes for very little. Many young families heard of the homes selling for 100K in Mantua, while similar Fairfax homes, but not in Mantua, were selling for 400K.

So many young families moved in at the same time. They all got to know each other and got very close. It is still a tight-knit community. It certainly was not bought out by any house-flippers because none of the homes are that nice inside.

They dominate the PTA K through 12, and they complain that all the Mantua moms have to do all the work. No wonder it is hard to find any diverse representation at a PTA meeting. At the end of a long workday, most people do not have the energy to attend a meeting for a select group of people.

Now they are finally addressing it, but back to the main point. They are housewives who were nothing special, but they got lucky with a real estate investment.
