northern region hoops 2015-16

Who are the teams to beat? I heard there are some new coaches around the region - wonder who'll do well and who will struggle.

Should be a fun season of high school hoops

6A: The reigning region champ Westfield brings back their two best players so they are the team to beat on paper. In the mix will be Herndon, Fairfax, S. County, LB and Woodson. Woodbridge is loaded

5A: Wakefield

Woodbridge in the South, so at least no FFX school will have to go through them until Richmond.

Any clue how Woodson faired in a scrimmage against PVI? PVI absolutely loaded.

It just so happens that I was there. Yes, PVI is loaded. First quarter score was 9-5 PVI. 2nd quarter was 16-15 PVI. Woodson took their starters out for the third while PVI kept their studs in so it was ugly. 4th quarter PVI had their 2nd team in against WT starters who easily won the quarter.

WT battled hard while being undersized at every position. Ayoub can really shoot.

Yes he can, though not knowing what the rest of the roster will look like and not much other experience, it's hard to say if he will have the room he needs.

Red...nice to grace us with your presence:)....

With so many quality private options for the best ballers, the ball is just not what it once was. Can't be....Very curious to see how WF fills the holes left by the role players. That team actually turned on very good D when they wanted. And they boarded too. Two returning very good players will have to find a better way to complement each other now that teams have a better plan vs them...teams last year just made the old guy put the ball on the floor and shifted a low post defender when he drove. Got a lot of points on foul shots. If he is willing to dish to BF and vice versa, they will be very tough. Herndon is maturing and could really push them.

Love that point guard who graduated from Woodson. MA is a gifted shooter but like many in the category, it becomes much harder w/o a penetrater. If they do in fact have more gifted shooters, then they will be tough b/c they always seem to be unselfish. When MA was not on fire last year, the other guard who played some was not strong.

I am taking Herndon as the surprise region winner...my top 4

Herndon
Woodson
Westfield
SLakes

Yes, I'm busy selling Adidas shoes to area teams but I have a little time to chime in on local hoops.

Nice analysis of WF. Also agree about Herndon being a dangerous team. The only team I question in your final 4 is S. Lakes. They might be a year away but will be tough nonetheless.

I have confidence the WT staff will find a way to get their shooters open looks.

Patriot Conf will be deep. LB, SC, WTW, WS, and MV...one of them wont make the regional tournament

This will be a test to see if Doug Craig can indeed win without Eric Bowls. I bet he's secretly been looking forward to proving he can coach without a d1 point guard.

Hayfield has a transfer, Langston Gaither from Edison. He may be the best player in the Confernce.
Fairfax returns two starters from a pretty good team and the twins who are big and physical
Not sure what Yorktown has except a new coach. They weren't very good a year ago

Others...
South Lakes is pretty young, but talented. They could be dangerous as the season moves forward.
Madison has a strong senior class and a talented freshman. Let's see what they can do

The better teams in the region are not in this Confernce

Yes, yes, and yes. I am telling you, Langley is the deepest and most complete team in the Liberty conference.

Battlefield preseason #4 in the state and beat Woodson by about 50 in their scrimmage on Friday without their soph who will be all-region this year.

Yeah, not Fairfax County, but Battlefield is sick. I watched them in states last year and their team was so good and consisted of almost all underclassmen. That sophomore you mention is an absolute stud and I totally agree with you that he will be an all region. Surprised a private school didn't snag him.

Wow, did Woodson play any starters? If the scrimmage was pretty close to a real game in terms of personnel, they may be in trouble.

Both teams played their starters a lot but there was some time with end of the bench guys. I believe they played 6 quarters but I left after the 4th. I'm not sure what happened after that. If I remember right it was 81-35 after 4. Woodson really struggled with Battlefield's athleticism. Ayoub hit some 3's but they struggled to get him looks. He really struggled whenever Battlefield trapped him. Could be a long year for WTW.

With all due respect to Steve K2's football predictions, I will do the same when not busy selling Addias and UnderArmor gear to local teams. This week I'll stick to only teams that are playing area teams.

Centreville vs. Marshall (-14)
Chantilly vs. Stuart (+16)
Hayfield vs. Edison (+8)
LB vs. Yorktown (+3)
Osburn vs, S. County (-4)
Robinson vs.Madison (+12)
W. Springfield vs. Fairfax (+1) Game of the night

Oakton vs. Mclean (+12) Is Oakton for real?
Robinson vs. Langley (+2) Game of the night
S. County vs. Broad Run (+10) No football players for SC
S. Lakes vs. Woodson (-6) My Cavs look good early
WL vs. Lee (+16) Unwatchable?
W. Pot vs. Tuscarora (+2) Not familiar with Tuscarora
Westfield vs. LB (-2) Butler should have his way w/out WF football guys
Yorktown s. Jefferson (+20) Yorktown is solid
Stone Bridge vs. CV (+12) Don't know much about either team

South Lakes lost to Robinson by 7; Woodson beat Robinson by 15. Therefore Woodson will beat Robinson by 22. LOL, if only it were that easy.

My Cavs are balanced this year not relying on Bowles to run everything. Fairfax ran two guys at Ayoub all game and WTW still won by 17 over a well-coached, good Fairfax team on Saturday.

Yikes. And Lake Braddock only beat Yorktown by 3.

Yorktown parents demand results so we'll see. Should be a good season, and one of the better Liberty teams for sure.

No excuse for losing to TJ. Lots of questions after you put up only 34.

It's still TJ. Why do they even have sports? Should play for their home school.

Logistics of this would be impossible.
All things considered TJ sports have always held their own.

He should probably teach them to shoot better, then.

Madison won by 11. Both teams are well coached, but Madison played much better as a team last night. Not impressed by the demeanor of the Marshall team, which has too many showboats. The senior who transferred back from Georgetown Prep is not very good and puts up a big fuss, but the 6'10 junior is turning into a promising player.

Doesn't mean much considering Westfield is still missing Scanlon and other football players.

No. They've had two starters out hurt the past two games and will be fine when they return.

Would be Coach Craig's finest coaching job yet if he's able to steer this group to a conference title. Not nearly as talented as his other recent championship teams and this Patriot Conference is just brutal.

Red: Thanks, didn't know that.

NR: Even more so considering the last three years they lost in the conference tournament before making their regional runs.

True. Speaks to the quality of the Patriot that they've had teams (even 7 seeds) that have been able to knock off the eventual region champs.

Scanlon had a nice game the other night - 27?

James Buttler had over 45 points against tc williams as well.

WS seems a tad overrated imo

Westfield has 2 sure fire D1 players, would be undefeated if Scanlon and Johnson came back from football earlier, and might end up winning it all. How does losing to them make Battlefield a pretender? They just had a bad game.

Battlefields early loss definitley doesn't make them a pretender. Westfields a team that has run the gauntlet before, battlefield just needs more experience before they meet again.

For a week? They've been playing together for years. Even without those players a 30 point loss to Lake Braddock is bad.

Agreed, Francis isn't a d1 player - if he does go d1 he won't get off the bench - put that in stone

Fun Fact: Against Battlefield, Francis scored as many points (34) as Johnson (17) and Scanlon (17)combined. I know it's just one game but definetly a D1 talent.

Nothing like some keyboard courage - anyways, where are all those D1 offers? He has a mystery offer/interest from Towson. He's hot or ICE cold, undersized too, wasn't that great at O'Connell either.

Good player, will get a free education based on his skill set but just saying I can't see him at a D1 school as a scholarship player.

I see that Battlefield lost to Potomac tonight

Interesting couple of days for Battlefield. Run off the court by Westfield but then gave Potomac all sorts of trouble. Game went to OT but Battlefield had them on the ropes late in regulation. They'll be a tough out in February.

Westfield plays Patriot in the first round, not Potomac. And I am not sure which Potomac they are referring to. The tourney website says Potomac (McLean-private school), but the Potomac (Dumfries, VHSL D5) school athletics site has them participating in the Bash. Someone is wrong. I would lean towards Potomac School from McLean since I would hope the website organizers know which teams were invited; plus the school websites are not always run by the schools and someone who owns the site inputs data.
