northern region hoops 2015-16

Who are the teams to beat? I heard there are some new coaches around the region - wonder who'll do well and who will struggle.

Should be a fun season of high school hoops

6A: The reigning region champ Westfield brings back their two best players so they are the team to beat on paper. In the mix will be Herndon, Fairfax, S. County, LB and Woodson. Woodbridge is loaded

5A: Wakefield

Woodbridge in the South, so at least no FFX school will have to go through them until Richmond.

Any clue how Woodson faired in a scrimmage against PVI? PVI absolutely loaded.

It just so happens that I was there. Yes, PVI is loaded. First quarter score was 9-5 PVI. 2nd quarter was 16-15 PVI. Woodson took their starters out for the third while PVI kept their studs in so it was ugly. 4th quarter PVI had their 2nd team in against WT starters who easily won the quarter.

WT battled hard while being undersized at every position. Ayoub can really shoot.

Yes he can, though not knowing what the rest of the roster will look like and not much other experience, it's hard to say if he will have the room he needs.

Red...nice to grace us with your presence:)....

With so many quality private options for the best ballers, the ball is just not what it once was. Can't be....Very curious to see how WF fills the holes left by the role players. That team actually turned on very good D when they wanted. And they boarded too. Two returning very good players will have to find a better way to complement each other now that teams have a better plan vs them...teams last year just made the old guy put the ball on the floor and shifted a low post defender when he drove. Got a lot of points on foul shots. If he is willing to dish to BF and vice versa, they will be very tough. Herndon is maturing and could really push them.

Love that point guard who graduated from Woodson. MA is a gifted shooter but like many in the category, it becomes much harder w/o a penetrater. If they do in fact have more gifted shooters, then they will be tough b/c they always seem to be unselfish. When MA was not on fire last year, the other guard who played some was not strong.

I am taking Herndon as the surprise region winner...my top 4

Herndon
Woodson
Westfield
SLakes

Yes, I'm busy selling Adidas shoes to area teams but I have a little time to chime in on local hoops.

Nice analysis of WF. Also agree about Herndon being a dangerous team. The only team I question in your final 4 is S. Lakes. They might be a year away but will be tough nonetheless.

I have confidence the WT staff will find a way to get their shooters open looks.

Patriot Conf will be deep. LB, SC, WTW, WS, and MV...one of them wont make the regional tournament

This will be a test to see if Doug Craig can indeed win without Eric Bowls. I bet he's secretly been looking forward to proving he can coach without a d1 point guard.

Hayfield has a transfer, Langston Gaither from Edison. He may be the best player in the Confernce.
Fairfax returns two starters from a pretty good team and the twins who are big and physical
Not sure what Yorktown has except a new coach. They weren't very good a year ago

Others...
South Lakes is pretty young, but talented. They could be dangerous as the season moves forward.
Madison has a strong senior class and a talented freshman. Let's see what they can do

The better teams in the region are not in this Confernce

Yes, yes, and yes. I am telling you, Langley is the deepest and most complete team in the Liberty conference.

Battlefield preseason #4 in the state and beat Woodson by about 50 in their scrimmage on Friday without their soph who will be all-region this year.

Yeah, not Fairfax County, but Battlefield is sick. I watched them in states last year and their team was so good and consisted of almost all underclassmen. That sophomore you mention is an absolute stud and I totally agree with you that he will be an all region. Surprised a private school didn't snag him.

Wow, did Woodson play any starters? If the scrimmage was pretty close to a real game in terms of personnel, they may be in trouble.

Both teams played their starters a lot but there was some time with end of the bench guys. I believe they played 6 quarters but I left after the 4th. I'm not sure what happened after that. If I remember right it was 81-35 after 4. Woodson really struggled with Battlefield's athleticism. Ayoub hit some 3's but they struggled to get him looks. He really struggled whenever Battlefield trapped him. Could be a long year for WTW.

With all due respect to Steve K2's football predictions, I will do the same when not busy selling Addias and UnderArmor gear to local teams. This week I'll stick to only teams that are playing area teams.

Centreville vs. Marshall (-14)
Chantilly vs. Stuart (+16)
Hayfield vs. Edison (+8)
LB vs. Yorktown (+3)
Osburn vs, S. County (-4)
Robinson vs.Madison (+12)
W. Springfield vs. Fairfax (+1) Game of the night

Oakton vs. Mclean (+12) Is Oakton for real?
Robinson vs. Langley (+2) Game of the night
S. County vs. Broad Run (+10) No football players for SC
S. Lakes vs. Woodson (-6) My Cavs look good early
WL vs. Lee (+16) Unwatchable?
W. Pot vs. Tuscarora (+2) Not familiar with Tuscarora
Westfield vs. LB (-2) Butler should have his way w/out WF football guys
Yorktown s. Jefferson (+20) Yorktown is solid
Stone Bridge vs. CV (+12) Don't know much about either team

South Lakes lost to Robinson by 7; Woodson beat Robinson by 15. Therefore Woodson will beat Robinson by 22. LOL, if only it were that easy.

My Cavs are balanced this year not relying on Bowles to run everything. Fairfax ran two guys at Ayoub all game and WTW still won by 17 over a well-coached, good Fairfax team on Saturday.

Yorktown parents demand results so we'll see. Should be a good season, and one of the better Liberty teams for sure.

No excuse for losing to TJ. Lots of questions after you put up only 34.

Madison won by 11. Both teams are well coached, but Madison played much better as a team last night. Not impressed by the demeanor of the Marshall team, which has too many showboats. The senior who transferred back from Georgetown Prep is not very good and puts up a big fuss, but the 6'10 junior is turning into a promising player.

Would be Coach Craig's finest coaching job yet if he's able to steer this group to a conference title. Not nearly as talented as his other recent championship teams and this Patriot Conference is just brutal.

True. Speaks to the quality of the Patriot that they've had teams (even 7 seeds) that have been able to knock off the eventual region champs.

Westfield has 2 sure fire D1 players, would be undefeated if Scanlon and Johnson came back from football earlier, and might end up winning it all. How does losing to them make Battlefield a pretender? They just had a bad game.

For a week? They've been playing together for years. Even without those players a 30 point loss to Lake Braddock is bad.

Nothing like some keyboard courage - anyways, where are all those D1 offers? He has a mystery offer/interest from Towson. He's hot or ICE cold, undersized too, wasn't that great at O'Connell either.

Good player, will get a free education based on his skill set but just saying I can't see him at a D1 school as a scholarship player.

I see that Battlefield lost to Potomac tonight

Interesting couple of days for Battlefield. Run off the court by Westfield but then gave Potomac all sorts of trouble. Game went to OT but Battlefield had them on the ropes late in regulation. They'll be a tough out in February.

Westfield plays Patriot in the first round, not Potomac. And I am not sure which Potomac they are referring to. The tourney website says Potomac (McLean-private school), but the Potomac (Dumfries, VHSL D5) school athletics site has them participating in the Bash. Someone is wrong. I would lean towards Potomac School from McLean since I would hope the website organizers know which teams were invited; plus the school websites are not always run by the schools and someone who owns the site inputs data.

St Albans is a very good team. We will find out tonight, as the winner of the WF vs St A's game, or West Springfield, will win the tournament IMO.

Potomac is very athletic, but undisciplined and, if last night is any indication, a bad shooting team. St A's had something to do with that because of their defense and athleticism. But I can see how Potomac can run over weaker/smaller teams. As a side note, the Potomac scorekeeper told me "we're 8-0, but we haven't played anybody yet". Yes, they beat Battlefield in OT, but BF is vulnerable.

Robinson 2653
Westfield 2608
Centreville 2472
West Potomac 2466
Woodson 2446

By not having a high enrollment I meant that it doesn't have as much as a few other 6A schools and that the school doesn't have nearly the amount of the students that it was built to have. It's supposed the hold 600 more students than it has now. Sorry I wasn't clear enough.

Strictly off records, which can be deceiving against varying levels of competition, here are some of the top performing teams through the first half of the season. I know programs like Herndon, South Lakes, Woodson, will have a lot to say about this down the stretch.

5A
Wakefield 11-0
Tuscarora 11-1
Potomac 10-1
Stone Bridge 6-2
Potomac Falls 8-1
Marshall 8-1

6A
Westfield 7-2

Is this a serious question? Size of school for basketball not that important. You put your best 5 on the court and if you happen to have a couple of great athletes you are in business.

Champe coach used to work under LB's coach - they are also ranked ahead of LB in the latest washington post rankings.

As for Woodbridge, will be interesting to see if they can make a run next month - chemistry isn't something that happens overnight

Champe is looking good. Now they have a true point guard in Fragala who can control the game and dish it or kill you with his jump shot. When his shot is on it's lights out. They have a forward named Deng who puts up some big scoring and rebounding numbers as well.

Champe coach... or Champe dad for the update.

C'mon, Champe sports are a joke, but they have winning records because the competition is so God-awful.

I have never in my life seen a more counterfeit football team in my life - they had the easiest schedule possible, and got waxed when they played a good team.

Same for the hoops - will get smacked around by decent teams all day long.

But, thanks Coach! Thanks, Champe Dad!

Because football is a sport where players try to advance an oblong ball by either running or passing until they reach an area of the field known as an endzone, at which point they score a touchdown.

Basketball, on the other hand, is a sport where players can dribble (bounce up and down) or pass a round ball and attempt to make it go throw a round hoop slighly bigger than the ball more times than the opposing players, or "team."

^ They took West Springfield to the wire - they seem to play down to the competition like against TCW.

Multiple guys have led them in scoring this season according to the post website so clearly they have a mix of guys who can score the basketball.

South Co seems to always be a .500 team

They will have some good years and some bad years. Look at Westfield, some years they are a .500 team and other years (08, 09, 12, 15, & 16) they look like the best team in 6A North.

just like football it really all depends on what athletes are coming threw the program at that moment in time. if you have a handful of good players you can be a .500 team. but if you have one or two superstar players that will push into contender status. bb only has 5 playing at a time. most teams don't have a superstar calibar player in public school every single year.

Too many pudding pops Dr. Cosby

With all of the delays and back-to-backs I think teams like West Pot, South County, TC, and SL will have the advantage because of them not having a "Go-To" guy - a lot of depth.

Westfield's dynamic duo is battle tested so I wouldn't be worried about them if I was a Bulldogs fan

I don't think the Woodson pick is unreasonable. Not much of a resume for Battlefield. Beat Hayfield by 2, Mount Vernon by 19 (Woodson split I believe?), two wins over Osbourn. Did take Potomac to OT.

Finals I have seen so far:
Battlefield over Woodson
Chantilly over WL
Robinson over SL
WP over Patriot
Westfield over Hayfield
SJ over LB
WS over Osbourn
Herndon upsets Langley

I guess that's all. That's one four seed and one three seed.

Concorde Conference 5 = 4-0
Patriot Conference 7 = 2-2
Cardinal Conference 8 = 2-2
Liberty Conference 6 = 0-4

How did Francis only score 6 for Westfld?

If I remember, that wasn't a runaway game for Westfield. They are fallible. If they run into the right team.

Both Francis and Scanlon have the flu, the fact that either played was miraculous. If they only win by 1 that's all it takes. Anyone who has watched this team knows they do whatever to get the W.

Not sure why its not on there. Consolation game is Saturday at 4pm. Championship at 8. Both at Robinson.

Thanks figured something like that. So a quadruple header Saturday at Robinson. Get your money's worth.

Yes. Expanded from 4 to 8 teams. Top 4 in each region qualify. When realignment happens it will be top 2 teams from each of the 4 new regions. Nice little money grab this year mainly.

It will continue to be a money grab with no district/conference tournament. More money goes to VHSL at the region level compared to the district tournaments which will end.

I thought district tournaments would continue in VHSL sports with the new proposed districts?

Maybe, but outside of 6A North is hard because they can't serve as the region qualifier bridge members are all different classes. But even if they have them here, still fewer games because what were 8 team districts are now 5.

Does Westfeilds Francis #0 have any offers? I thought he was by far best player on the court last night. His ball handling skills are superior and he’s has great speed and quickiness.

If it weren't for two private school transfers, Westfield would suck. Hence the double digit loss to Lake Braddock earlier in the season.

It's not like they recruited them or anything. They both are from that area and were following in their siblings footsteps.

I'm not saying I blame him when the alternative was riding the bench at PVI. Just that Westfield certainly was advantaged by those circumstances. Same for West Springfield with their big.

No kidding. Obviously no public school is going to recruit away a player from one of the biggest basketball programs in the country. Now, transferring to be the big fish instead? Makes sense

Who rode the bench at Pvi? Isn't scanlon the only one who transferred from pvi? I remembered him switching off as a starter and 6th man sophomore year

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually you're wrong with this theory. First, Scanlon lives in Virginia Run where he has his entire life. He actually transferred IN to PVI. He did play as a sophomore but told his parents he wanted to go to Westfield so he could hang with his childhood friends. He also wanted to play on a quality football team unlike what they have at PVI. Not sure about Francis or the circumstances but sounds like it was no major move for him to attend Westfield either. Second, Westfield lost to Lake Braddock because Scanlon, Johnson, Huling, Eckert, and Chapman-Greene were still playing football. Of course they haven't lost since the football season ended, the missing third of their team returned. In case you don't follow Westfield basketball Hank Johnson has stepped up this year. SO it's not just a two man show, not gonna lie, Scanlon and Francis are the two studs on the team but they've got a very good supporting cast.

Battlefield boys
Westfield boys
Potomac boys
Wakefield boys
Loudoun Valley boys
John Champe boys
George Mason boys

Oakton girls
Fairfax girls
Potomac girls
Edison girls

Scanlon didn't ride the bench at PVI, even as a freshman he got significant playing time.

Djonkam was a starter at O'Connell and honorable mention all-WCAC as a sophomore.

I saw that. I thought maybe they'd move both Potomac games to VCU but it's pretty full down there too. Every other site has games during the day on Friday, but that's not possible at Robinson because of school.

ROBINSON SECONDARY
Friday, March 4, 2016
5:30 PM – 6A Boys - #2-Westfield vs. #3-C.D. Hylton
7:00 PM – 6A Girls - #2-Fairfax vs. #3-Cosby
8:30 PM – 6A Boys - #1-Battlefield vs. #4-Cosby
Saturday, March 5, 2016
11:00 AM – 2A Boys - #1-George Mason vs. #4-Graham
12:30 PM – 5A Girls - #1-Edison vs. #4-L.C. Bird
2:00 PM – 5A Boys - #1-Potomac vs. #4-Norview
4:00 PM – 5A Girls - #2-Potomac vs. #3-Salem
5:30 PM – 5A Boys - #2-Wakefield vs. #3-Deep Run
7:00 PM – 6A Girls - #1-Oakton vs. #4-Woodbridge

This is the most asinine schedule of playoff games 1.5 hours between games. The team has to have a 20 min. warm-up. That leaves 1hr 10 min for each contest as well as clear the team area and stands. How about playing at two gyms instead of one. Lake Braddock, Hayfield, TCWilliams, Garfield, Mount Vernon are good choices. I sure would hate to have one of the late games. It willstart at least 1.5 - 2 hours late.

No doubt it will be a challenge. As you mentioned, they should have selected a dual super site and included Lake Braddock with Robinson to host any overflow games. They were guaranteed to host at least four games for 6A North boys and girls. In addition, nearly half of 6A South, most of 5A North, half of 4A West, and a few other odd schools like George Mason were assigned to Robinson. Unlike all the other sites, they can't play during the day Friday.

At Robinson, Westfield-Hylton boys and Oakton-Woodbridge girls should have been scheduled for Thursday. No travel concerns and would have freed time on Friday and Saturday.

Francis:22

Scanlon:14
Jones:8
Katchmark:3

How's this team going to be next year? Obviously not going to contend for States but I think they can win Conference 5 or contend. JV was bad but most games were close and the best sophomore was on varsity. Freshman ran away with the conference without their PVI transfer (transferred in mid season, was on PVI JV). I think in 3 years time they will be ready to contend again for states when the class of '19 are seniors or if they have another private school transfer with D1 potential.

It was about 4-5 years ago. Part of budget cuts, they just do football season now.

I agree. It is weird to see only one team with them. Maybe that can be added to the flu excuse for Westfield losing to Battlefield. Hoping they both win their semifinal games....state final would be a great tiebreaker for them!

Westfield freshman lost 2 conference games, same as Oakton. Westfield beat Oakton once, they did not get to play the 2nd round because of silly Friday night cancellation.

Chantilly had a freshman on varsity, and Robinson had 2 on JV, Westfield did not play any freshman up.

Westfield was good, but a little early to think about contending for states in 2019.

Pretty much every school has at least one kid transfer out to private school, so it should equal out if they all stay private.

Westfield freshman lost conference game against Chantilly without one of their best players. The private school transfer was on PVI JV. And Westfield doesn't let freshman play JV or Varsity during regular season. Some freshman could've moved up in an average school but Westfield is stacked.

Actually your probably right. Freshman performance doesn't really mean much. When Westfield's class of '16 were freshman I'm pretty sure they were the worst in the conference.

Yes, the South has dominated 6A. Congrats to Westfield on an incredible season, I know I for one thought they blew their one opportunity last year and did not envision them being back. One takeaway though, is I have never seen the South so down in basketball. Are there private schools finally opening up and taking away the talent as is the case here in Northern Virginia?

The southern region is not down... Woodside had multiple private school transfers come back, they were loaded with talent. Westfield just beat them in the semi finals and played a less talented Oscar smith team in the finals.

Home school, two 8th grades I think. He will either be 20 in April, or in the summer.

Sadly, likely not his doing. Daddy probably led the charge.

Just think how good a high school player he could be if he now went to Oak Hill for one more year?

Cockrill was an important sophomore. There were a lot of important juniors. Eckert, Petrillo and Jewell were important. Johnson and Frimpong were huge when they weren't suspended.

Ivory Frimpong JR - missed almost half the regular season due to partying, contributed when came back but not spectacular.
Brian Delaney JR - important piece as a K/P.
Taevon Chapman Greene JR - did contribute some.
Russ Steinhilber SO - played when games were over
Joey Free JR - see Frimpong comment
Rehman Johnson JR - see Frimprong comment except he actually did become a huge piece in the last 3 playoff games as QB.
Bryson Malo JR - solid player, played a lot after injuries depleted LB unit.
Kevin Petrillo JR - solid player, big contributor.

Thats really true. It certainly doesn't help that if your a really good player at a public HS here in Fairfax, you can easily enroll in a WCAC school. And why wouldn't you? The level of play is in another stratosphere.

How does Scanlon win 6A State POY and not 6A Region POY? His team didn't lose a game once the football guys were back until the regional finals. I think the voting took place once the regular season ended. Butler is a nice player, but they lost a bunch of games at the end of the regular season. Watching both play, I thought Scanlon was the clear choice. Just curious if anybody has some insight there.
