Saw a bald eagle flying over 236

Strange thing is he was flying around in circles, stopping to perch on a tree every so often. There were a few other birds flying around with him (or her). Guessing he was stalking some prey. But what the hell, are eagle sightings normal around here? Btw his wingspan was huge, at least 3'.

Very cool. I’ve seen them in Southern Maryland a few times. There was one nesting on the Wilson Bridge a number of years ago, if I remember correctly.

Have you been thru Annandale lately? it used to resemble a real American town, now it doesn't, hence the tears from the American Bald Eagle.

There are more than 500 nesting pairs of bald eagles in Virginia, and even three this past year in the District. The area around Mason Neck Park (east of Woodbridge) is probably the best area for spotting them. The wingspan of an adult male is about six feet. The larger female can be closer to eight feet.

There is a Bald Eagle sighting reporting site. - http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/directory/VA.html

Somebody reported one on October 30th over Rt 50 and Cherry St in Vienna(Mattress Land). Wonder if this is the same one.

Chris Rodriguez wrote the following: 30 Oct 2015 around 5:15pm: I was at the intersection of Rte 50 and Cherry St., in Falls Church waiting for the signal to change. I looked up and notice a couple of small birds harassing a larger bird. The big bird swooped down, maybe 20-30 ft above ground. That's when I realized it wasn't a raven and I saw the white tail feathers. I quickly glances to its head and saw that it was white. An eagle! I was thrilled to see one this close, yet wondered what it was doing in the area with all the noise, bldgs., congestion, etc. It swooped into some trees by an apt. complex where I lost sight of it due to the signal changing.

Holy fuck - A 9 foot nest that weighs two tons!!!!!

Bald eagles build their nests in large trees near rivers or coasts. A typical nest is around 5 feet in diameter. Eagles often use the same nest year after year. Over the years, some nests become enormous, as much as 9 feet in diameter, weighing two tons.

More realistically crying because it couldn't find anything to steal.

"For my own part. I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen the representative of our country. He is a bird of bad moral character. He does not get his living honestly ... besides he is a rank coward: The little king bird not bigger than a sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district."

I grew up in Fairfax (born 1967), and never once saw a Bald Eagle in the interior of Fairfax County until a few years ago. Especially starting a few years ago, their population must have improved.

Most recent sightings of Bald Eagles in the interior of Fairfax/Prince William (not on the Potomac or Occoquan):

All spring 2015 at Fox Mill Road near Oakton/Reston. Numerous sightings, flying and perched.
June 2015, hovering near Railroad Avenue, Fairfax.
July 2015, hovering over the courthouse area of Manassas.
August 2015, at a pond in Reston, unsuccessfully tried to catch a fish. Then a crow came and chased the eagle off.

The bald eagle is becoming a more common sight in this area.

If you are impressed by big birds, keep your eye out for the turkey vulture. They have wing spans of 5-6 feet. They also like to circle and perch in trees. They do a good job of cleaning up carcasses.

The eagle caught my eye because a) it was a lot larger then any hawk I've seen, and b) the tail and head has distinct white feathers, that contrast well with the body feathers. Hawks have more of a blend of off-white and tan feathers.

That quote is interesting because now that I think of it that's what the other birds were doing, pestering the crap out of the eagle. He looked agitated. I guess he kept flying around erratically because the other birds were trying to get him to go somewhere else.

Hey Greybeard,

Ornithologist could give you a better answer, but basically, you study the characteristics that make the bird unique: size, color, shape of head, wings and tail, etc. To the trained eye, a hawk looks much different from an eagle even when it's flying high above.

Eagles rarely flap their wings. If a large bird is circling over a field, it is almost certainly a hawk. If it's near a sizable body of water, it might be an eagle. Chatter birds chase hawks.

I saw a bald eagle flying near the intersection of Washington and Broad Streets in Fall Church yesterday afternoon around 4:30 and right after that a red tailed hawk flying in the same direction.

That's not too far from the Potomac "as the eagle flies" -- it is a very developed area but lots of new construction is going on in FC -- perhaps rats trying to find new hiding places are attracting the attention of these magnificent birds of prey?

They are pretty much all over the region nowadays. We see them while we are out hunting/fishing on the Potomac all the time. They eat mostly eat fish and scavenge for food. A nice tasty rotting road kill deer carcass is perfect. Not really the majestic symbol of our country that everyone was "taught" about when young.

Golden eagles are much more predatory hunters. Watch out for your pet chihuahua....

I agree with Fudgie, bald eagles are undignified scavengers. They were as common as crows when I lived in Alaska where they were isolated and spared from the ravages of DDT poisoning. They were always getting into dumpsters or hanging out at the landfill.

I'm glad they are no longer endangered.

Saw one too on 236, right as you get into Annandale. We were at a red light and I was riding shotgun holding my 2 month old tiny puppy.
The eagle was staring at my puppy and flew straight to our car, stopped about 2 feet away, lifted up and flew over the car. It was huge.

Did it want my puppy? Can they not recognize glass from a distance?
