To all my left lane slow friends.
It doesn't matter if you're going the speed limit. You may feel like you're doing the right thing by slowing a speeder down, or you may feel it's your RIGHT to drive in any lane you 'darn well please.'
You're not. It's not.
And you ARE breaking the law.
Here's how it is DESIGNED to work:
You're in what you think is just like any other lane except that it's 'fast'. Someone approaches you from behind at 64mph (and you look down to see you're going 57mph and you switch to your smug 'justified' face because the sign says 55). While rather close in proximity, the driver begs you to move over.
Oh, how you should.
But you don't.
The driver tries to be patient and now cars start lining up behind both of you. There's a quick flash of the brights, (Which means the driver would like to pass) and if you look up from your phone you either move over, or your ego decides that you'll be stubborn (and in some cases actually slow down ON PURPOSE). In most cases you don't even notice the signal (flash to pass) but you just start complaining about the guy riding your bumper.
Now there's four or five vehicles lining up behind you while you have a LOT of distance ahead of you and enough room to move over. Now the sixth vehicle back finally jets across two lanes of traffic to go around not only you and the cars behind you, but but also around the slower cars in the two lanes to your right, only to find that there's no GOOD reason for you to be IN THE WAY.
Note that he used the 'SLOW' lane to do this in and dangerously passes on the right.
Move over. You don't have to be stubborn. It's not your lane. You don't have to be self-righteous. Please be part of the solution. Don't cause traffic jams and contribute to road rage.

Im old and retired from the federal government. I enjoy pissing people off. Some days I grab my cassette tapes full of 70s music and just do a lap around the beltway with the old cruise control set at 58 mph. Lots of folks try to communicate with me and wave. One time a guy waived a gun at me, that was so cool!

Ditto. How do you explain the thought process of someone going 75 in the left lane who states: "They are trying to pass me, but I'm going 20 miles over the speed limit already, so I'm not moving over"

We need more speed camera's that can efficiently issue tickets mostly for speeders during the peak rush hours. Basically, the speeders, agressive drivers and the tailgaters are the same people. This is the only way to get the message across.
Get these same people over and over for speeding or aggressive driving till it drives their insurance rates so high that they are in a panic state in these peak hours.
OP: Hopefully this will squash your crazy theory that you have tried to convey to the rest of us normal driving folks without anxiety levels such as yours.

If there's a slow driver in the left land, I make sure to get in front of them and coast down to about 10 mph until they move to the right. Then I speed back up. If they move back to the left lane, I repeat the process.

Reminds me of an 85 year old grandfather in our neighborhood. He still drives. Last year he drove down to Florida and back. All on I95. I asked him how it went. He said: "I just put the cruise control on 55, kept two hands on the wheel and never looked anywhere but straight ahead. All I know is that I made it."

I don't think they're trolls. That's exactly the mindset of retired government employees. Make them retire and take away their little bit of power and they have to replace it with something. People that are driving slow in the left lane definitely need to get the fuck out of the way. With they said, OP's main point about legality is completely wrong. Makes this initially port semi-retarded. It's not illegal to drive in the left lane in Virginia. The law states that you must move out of the way for a visual or audible signal from the car behind you if it can be done safely. Speed is not relevant for this law.
