Top US Public Schools

Here is Newsweek's ranking of the top 1500 public schools in the US. Quite a bit of VA schools. Big question here - why no TJ? It was #1 two years in a row in US News and World, but not even top 1500 in Newsweek?

Porky... I don't have a beef with Fairfax, or Woodson (71) for that matter... just them Westfield bitches.

Btw, they tweaked the rankings. Except for Woodson, Oakton was ahead of all those schools the past couple of years (holding steady at 103-105 from 2005 to 2008)... and nothing has really changed... except Newsweek's metrics.

TJ is #1 on the US News rankings. It is disqualified from the Newsweek/Washington Post rankings because--while it is public--it accepts over half of its students based on an admissions test.

I find it hard to believe Talented and Gifted, Science/Engineering Magnet, and Paxon School for Advanced Studies are all mostly general admission. Corbett seems to be the first 'real' high school on the list.

And ... Madison was only #197 on this list.

Wakefield seems to be two schools in one -- they seem able to work with kids who are willing (or who have willing parents) but the other kids are just kinda shuffled along from what I've heard.

OK, looks like Mathews altered his method. Here is his list of schools disqualified because they "have few or no average students":

Is it true that Oakton, Marshall and Falls Church all ranked higher than Madison on this list? Guess the Vienna crowd can still beat up on South Lakes.

wow...I went to South Lakes...Surprised to even see it on the list...I would've guessed only 10% of students there actually went on to do something useful with their lives (obviously I'm in the 90% that did not).
Maybe the kids there are actually trying now...is there hope yet for the future of America? A future President from South Lakes? Maybe at least a presidential aide? Or are they all still smoking weed at the tunnel?

Congratulating the school board? How about congratulating the students who worked hard on their studies, applying themselves to education and teachers teaching them, etc helping these schools get ranked up. The school board on the other hand should go join a circus or something.

Yes - Oakton (155), Marshall (157), Falls Church (196) all higher than Madison (197).

Everyone knows all this list does is list how many AP tests are taken in a school, not the percentage of students passing the AP tests. In fact the Gifted and Talented school that is number one..due to requiring I think that all students take at least one AP, has a miserable pass rate on those tests. (The GT part of their name has nothing to do with IQ or passing standardized tests etc).

You mean out of 100,000 high schools in the U.S., South Lakes is only 500! That means they are only the top half of a percent! I can't believe the schoolboard wants to send my GT kid there! I heard from Marge over at the parlor that everyone at that school grows up to be a gangbanger.

That means South Lakes ranks in top 1% of the nations high schools.

If that percent is right, the rest of the nations schools must be very, very bad.

Actually, there are 27,000 public high schools in the USA. So South Lakes comes in at right at the top 2%. South Lakes gets ragged on a lot, but look at some of the Va Beach, Richmond, Roanoke, Fredericksburg, and Manassas big schools.

And yes, if that's bad, its STILL in the top 6%.

I think they just make documentaries about the bottom 6%. I know I've seen a few. Yikes.

And the rankings dont mean all that much, really--if you look at the methodology, you can surmise its more about momentum and going in the right direction. Taking AP tests and passing them, as opposed to just taking the courses.

But imagine this board discussing the umm....NEW ORLEANS PUBLIC SCHOOLS, for instance. The Jack Dale equivalent down there would be crucified!

LOL damn good point! I'll admit, as I wrote that, I never once considered the DC Schools. Either a blind spot on my part, or unconscious human squemishness, huh?

Now I'm curious about their scores!
