Any audio experts here?

Hello......I have a problem connecting my surround sound to my DirecTV. Do I connect the audio input on the surround sound directly to the DirecTV box or do I run it thru my television?

The DirecTV box has a single plug for audio out and the surround sound has two audio in plugs (left and right).

Any ideas?

I don't believe there is only one plug for audio-out on the Direct TV box. If there is it would have to be toslink(fiber). I guess it could be HDMI which has audio and video embedded.

Please post the model of your direct tv box and I could help.

Generally, you should connect the audio out from your DirecTV box directly to the receiver for your surround sound system. Many TVs will not pass through the surround sound signal they receive through HDMI, but your mileage may vary. See the article here http://www.cnet.com/news/20-tvs-tested-which-sets-can-pass-surround-sound-to-a-sound-bar/ (although this is from 2013).

What cables you need are entirely dependent on which DirecTV box, surround sound system, and possibly TV model you have.

According to the answer here https://support.directv.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1567/~/can-i-get-surround-sound-with-directv%3F, only the Genie HD DVR, HD DVR, HD receiver or Standard DVR (R22 model only) support Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

If you provide the model numbers for your TV, DirecTV box, and receiver for your surround sound system, I'm pretty sure I or someone else will be able to tell you exactly how to do what you're wanting to do.

I probably should note the surround sound is pretty old. No HDMI inputs

You've got a Genie Lite H44 receiver.

I swiped a picture of the back from the Solid Signal website. If you look at the group of three connectors in the middle, from left to right they are A/V Out, Coax Digital Audio Out, and HDMI.

The A/V out connector is DirecTV's composite output connection, which can supply either composite video and left and right audio, using a cable like this one http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=10PINCOMPOS&ss=534051 or component video with a cable like this one http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=H2510PIN. I suspect you're using the former.

If that's the case, you don't have to worry about the surround signal, because all you're getting from the A/V out on the Genie Lite is standard 2-channel stereo.

You say your surround system is pretty old. I suspect that you also have a regular old standard definition TV, since you're not using the HDMI output from the Genie Lite.

How you proceed depends on whether or not your TV has audio out jacks or not.

If yes, then you need a stereo RCA PATCH cable, which has two male connectors on each end, one red and one white. You connect the two audio outputs from the TV to the two audio inputs on your surround system.

If no, then you need a stereo RCA EXTENSION cable, which has two female connectors on one end and two male connectors on the other and uses the same red/white color code. You unplug the audio connections from your TV and connect the female ends of the extension cable to those, then connect the other, male ends to your surround system.

If you have other connectors besides the red and white RCA L/R jacks on your surround sound system, you may be able to get better sound depending on what connectors are available, but you might have to buy a coaxial digital sound converter (there are a few different types) and different cables.

If you want more help, post your TV's model number (or a picture of the back) and a picture of the inputs for your surround system.

Doesn't sound like you actually have a surround sound system, only a stereo. The L & R are analog inputs, the direct tv box should have them also. Connect those for a 2 channel system.

OK scratch all that. I have found in my "junk box" a newer home theater set up (Sony BDV-T57) that I bought a few years ago but never used. It has an HDMI input so all I need to do is connect an HDMI cable from the DirecTV box to the home theater and this will solve everything.....correct?

Thanks for the help!

Actually the TV is an old 55" Mitsubishi Gold Series 1080p. Was built before HDMI was invesnted. Uses an S video cable. The picture is still superb which is why I'm still hanging on to it. waiting for it to croak before I replace it.

Your tv will have s-video or component. You are going to need the DTV 10 pin cable to either convert to s-video or component, I think the pic quality is a wash between the two.

hdmi to the Sony however may not send a signal when the 10 pin is in use, not sure.

hmmm, this might better be answered by the A/V tech guy.

No. Connect a digital coax cable (probably RCA to RCA) from the output of the Genie Lite to the digital coax input of the BDV-T57. The HDMI connection on the BDV-T57 is an output for the Blu-Ray player that's part of the system. See page 25 of the BDV-T57 Operating Instructions https://docs.sony.com/release/BDVEx70-Tx7.pdf

Use the RCA composite cable (1 wire, yellow jack, should come with BDV-T57) or think about getting an RCA component video cable to connect the BDV-T57 to a video input on your TV so you can watch Blu-Ray and DVD disks.

I was surprised that what he did worked. The BDV-T57 Operating Instructions manual says that the HDMI port on the back of the is HDMI Out, which makes sense when you think about what kind of device it is.

No hurt feelings. Problem is solved, even though I didn't solve it.

HDMI outputs can have an ARC -- audio return channel. It isn't implemented consistently. Usually most people have use an external path, like TOS (or whatever).

HDMI is supposed to have an ethernet "channel" in the cable as well. I have never seen that implemented either.

I am far from an expert on A/V. All I know is everything is working like it's supposed to. I have DirecTV coming thru the surround sound, the Blu-Ray is working, and all controls and buttons work. I may not know why, but life is good.

As I noticed you are good at audio gear. I would need your advice. Can you recommend a good stereo receiver? I want to buy one but I'm not sure which one to choose as I don't know a lot of things about the audio systems and what features should I pay attention to. I read something about the best 2 channel stereo receiver. However, things aren't clearer. Actually I'm not keen on music, but my wife enjoys the high-quality sound in the house. She says that it's like in a concert hall. So, any suggestion will be appreciated.

Hey, dudes. I am not a professional in audio devices and for me is very hard to choose something when I want to buy a stereo, microphones, headsets, and many others. I went to a specialized market all the time and they advised me what to buy, however, all the devices were working for 3-6 months and then broke. I am tired of giving money for temporary devices and I found a good site Audio Direct where is described all the devices in part and which is the best to buy. I bought from their list headset and microphone and works for a year without any problems.
