After all, this is America, land of the scam and the home of the crooks.

If you have a home that relies on a sump pump you should keep an extra one on hand. Every five years replace the pump with the backup one and buy another new one for backup. Get a deep cycle battery back up power supply and replace the battery every 4 or 5 years. Keep a generator on hand and keep it serviced properly too.

OP, welcome to home ownership. And welcome to Northern Virginia. Yeah...dude-bro, it rains and floods here. Really WEIRD isn't it? Now it's time for you to learn how to MANAGE owning a home and managing the home and property itself. Unless of course you can afford a horde of brown, savage, illegal mud-people to do it for you.

You need to sit down and review EVERY aspect and system of your home's physical structure and the property. List of this stuff down. Then consider how frequently things need to be inspected, replaced or routinely maintained. Some items will require more attention, more frequently...others less frequently with less attention. Or some combination in between. Once you have everything written down, you can program all of these service intervals into your phone so you get reminders from your calendar. Nothing to remember and nothing gets missed.

A sump pump is a perfect example. In addition to keeping a backup pump, generator and a deep cycle battery backup as mentioned above...I also run water down my sump every 4 months and inspect its operation. Is the float switch and valve working properly? Is the pump turning off and turning on as it is supposed to? Is the pump out line clear and allowing the water being pumped out to flow freely? Is the pump properly lubricated?

It's a lot of work managing a home. Especially if you live by yourself or its just you and a significant other. I'm doing 4-5 small to medium projects a week to my home. But, I'll promise you this...in 40 years of owning a variety of homes, I've never once been standing in the parking lot of a home improvement store in the rain where they're sold out of sump pumps and I'm having to decide if $800 is worth it to buy one from some random citizen off the back of their truck. Meanwhile, there's 6 inches of water in my basement at home and there's mushrooms growing down there...all because I, the owner of my home, chose not to properly maintain the sump pump and otherwise not be prepared.

Peasants and their sump pumps. My multi million dollar Vienna estate has excellent drainage and does not need one.

OP is a lib. That much is clear. Entitled and ignorant as fuck.

If your house has a sump pump and you don't add an additional battery powered backup pump in the pit, you're a dumbass libturd.

Because of stupid lib assholes like you, EVERYBODY'S home owners insurance goes up.

Fuck libs!

No, libs expect it delivered and installed for free, paid for by someone else.

It's that cradle to grave thing, if the libs even let you get to the cradle. You might end up in a vacuum cleaner bag.

I ran my condensate line to the sump pump so it gets periodic testing. Not sure that's code but is handy.

What I wish I knew about before we finished our basement is a product from Basepump (www.basepump.com) that's water-powered: it uses pressure from a cold water line to drive a backup pump. If power's out, it's raining that hard, AND the water's out, I figure the basement is the least of my worries.

Alas, I learned about this after it was too late--tearing up half the basement for this is impractical. So I'm stuck with a battery backup.

If anyone has one of these water-powered beasties, I'd be interested to know what you think; it sure *sounds* good...

This is called an "eductor" pump. U.S. Navy uses essentially same design for damage control dewatering. Suspect it should work fine with sufficient water pressure/flow. I'd do some homework on that first before I bought one.

Another troll post. No one is selling sump pumps in a parking lot for $800. How would they even find clientele if they were? They have big signs saying Sump Pumps for sale and people are driving by ... oh a sump pump? why not? They show up and see it's $800.. and these geniuses just reach into their wallets full of thousands of dollars in cash and fork over $800? Yeah.. not happening.

The $80 sump pump in HD is more than enough for almost everyone. THey should also last longer than 5 years, but replace stuff as much as you want. It's smarter to just get a water sensor and put it nearby in the off chance it fails and water starts to overflow. The back battery or generator option is definitely a best practice but also largely unnecessary. I don't know about you but I haven't been without power for more than 30 minutes since I can remember now. What are the odds the power will go for days on end and so much water will enter your sump that the water will overflow? Seems pretty slim too.

So I go to home depot and I buy all the sump pumps they have (10 of them). I charge them on my credit card (1200 bucks). I sit in the parking lot with my sump pumps for sale sign and I sell 4 of them for a total of roughly 3000 bucks. The next day I return the unsold sump pumps for a refund. Sweet deal and no risk.

^^^^Typical libturd. No money, no plan and no life. During intense, sustained rains some sump pumps run continuously. You would have pretty bad flooding if the pump was out forfor just 30 minutes. Enough to ruin flooring, drywall, insulation and anything else in contact with the water.

I carry a couple grand on me at all times as I'm sure most people do. That's not very much money you know. I don't believe the $800 sump pump BS but I do believe that you're a fucking dumbass.

Let's everyone remember to stock up on chain saws while we're at it. They have been shown to have a nice profit margin in the aftermath of a hurricane.

We know. We alllllllllllllll know. You're just so damn butt-hurt...aren't you?

Why don't you go back down to your room...errrr, I mean your parents' basement? Don't worry, Mommy will be down soon to smother your genitals with marshmallow fluff while Daddy plays hide-the-nine-iron in your ass and then watches you lick your own shit off the end of it. Then you can all watch "This Old House" together...

There's a word for this, my friend: 'Arbitrage'

The simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset in order to profit from a difference in the price. It is a trade that profits by exploiting price differences of identical or similar assets, on different markets.

Ain't capitalism grand! lol.
