I love to kayak and so far I have been to Burke Lake, the Occoquan River, Lake Accotink, etc. Does anyone know of any other places to kayak? Thanks.

I see a bunch of people kayaking in Reston on Lake Audubon. Club? Training Class? not sure. I think you need a permit to launch your kayak.

Check here for access. http://www.reston.org/parks_rec/p_lakes.html

The Shenanadoah and Potomac rivers up near Harpers Ferry, WV are good places for kayaking & canoeing.

Lots of kayakers on Potomac at great falls...dangerous.

I have been to Burke Lake and Pohick Bay, both of which you can kayay or rent at but I expressly HATE. (Cars at BL and too shallow at PB)

Try Bull Run (can put in at marina) or Fountain head.

"Lots of kayakers on Potomac at great falls...dangerous."
You can do it, and you don't need a PFD.

The Anacostia is good place to yak as well.

Also try Rock Creek. The contaminents will do you good.

GreatFalls for experts... Georgetwon for beginners. There's a place right under and to the left of Key bridge which you access via K street. I think it's called Georgetown Canoe and Kayak club

This really depends on what kind of kayak you have.
For sea kayak, I would stay near DC or the chesapaeke areas.
For river kayak/white water> there are so many places around here.
there really is some great kayaking around here.

-Bull run stream, from gum springs road to rt 28 and beyond, it takes you through some amazing civil war sites.
-Shennandoah river- the whole thing...great place few good rapids lots of great camping
-north fork of the shennandoah- great kayaking. a couple rapids, great fishing
- the confluence of the potomac and the shennandoah has great rapids, lots of fun, but I would take someone who knows whats up.
-the trip from point of rocks to shennandoah is fun , and surpisingly fast for a wide river.
- Cub run stream near centreville - belive it or not in the spring it has class 5 rapids.
-goose creek stream/river , its real nice, fast water, few rapids, but it empties out in the potomac above the algonkian park.

I would stay away from the anacostia waterways, its fine until you fall in, the water smells like shit.

get a book called "Virginia white water guide" it has a old guy in a canoe on the front.

alot there is a great website from the USGS , that tells you the water levels in real time

The (open to the public) place under Key Bridge is Jack's Boat House. They rent kayaks and canoes.

This post shows how far Fairfax Underground has degenerated in ten years.

Yep. It was nice to see a bunch of non-troll answers before this turd showed up.

Also, I suddenly have the urge to take up kayaking.

Seneca Breaks is fun. You can put in at Violette's Lock on the C&O canal in MD and paddle down the rapids and take out at Blockhouse Point and paddle a mile back up the canal to your car. The old George Washington canal is on the Virginia side and you can run that too, just paddle across above the rapids to the other side to access it.

You and the rest of Fairfax county. Kayaking is the new fad now. I know three people who bought kayaks in the past month.

I've heard Rt. 50/29 in Fairfax City is a good place to learn:

You can even swing by Red Lobster when you are done.

I would love to kayak, but don't you need two people with another car to meet at the ending point so you can make it back to where you started? That just seems like a giant hassle.

Any waters around fairfax/bull run that are calm enough to go back with your kayak? Burke lake only allows fishing in a kayak I believe.

No, you can paddle around in the Potomac and come back. Little Hunting Creek has some places you can put in.

What's left of Lake Accotink. Be sure to make plenty of MS13 jokes.

local golf courses invite boaters of all kinds with crafts with less than 5 hp motors to boat at will. You can drive to the water hazards and unload/untrailer. Make sure to park out of the fairways...

And be sure to wear a helmet. Getting hit by a golf ball can be painful.

They are not actually going to go kayaking. They just want to drive around with a kayak on the roof of their car so they look cool. That is the "fad" in Fairfax.

Most of the plaza fountains highly encourage kayakers to use their fountains to demonstrate to people their skills.
