DO NOT VOTE for McElweeney - but here is the problem - he has the democratic machine behind him. the machine doesn't care if he is a detriment to the board or to our kids. people need to watch the school board videos. he does NOTHING to contribute to the discussions. what a waste...

Because the Democrats endorsed him. He did not originally get their endorsement-but one of their candidates had an assault charge against her for hitting a pro-Life protester with her car. She had to drop out, and McElveen replaced her. The Dem at-large candidates always win. That is how Moon gets reelected all the time--not the Asian community as is claimed so frequently on this board.
The only way to vote Ryan out is to vote someone else in to replace him. The Republican slate isn't particularly good either. So what is the alternative?
Let's do away with the school board. Let the County run the schools just like any other part of the County. Maybe, like clerk of the court and some other positions, have an ELECTED head of schools. That would mean no more of the $2,000 a month housing allowance Karen Garza gets (thanks to Ryan McElveen).
The fact that the schools are spending $80,000 a month on travel is enough reason to vote out every single school board member.
I voted already (absentee in person). You can vote for up to three of the At Large school board members. I chose only names not currently on the board.
I hope there's a significant turnover on the school board.

I've watched every single FCPS school board video since the beginning of the year. My assessment: this clown needs to be voted out - he contributes NOTHING to the conversation.

This from a lib trying to act like a 'moderate'. Your lib logic is undeniable. 'The current guy sucks but I don't know anything about the challenger so I'll vote for the current guy!'

Did he ever tell us why the non-incumbents weren't 'particularly good either?' What's wrong with them? Come on Bill., tell us.
Let me flip it on you; Who is the MODERATE Republican at large school board candidate with some actual experience dealing with the school administration? I am not going to vote for Ryan, but I am not going to vote for some political novice or some hard core conservative just to keep Ryan off the board. I asked this a week ago and so far no answers.

Moderate Democrats used to be called RINO's. The way-over-the-line extremists kicked them all out of the GOP in some sort of cleansing and purification ritual or other.

Get real, PLEASE! What was McElveen's experience before he was elected to the School Board? The best description that I can come up with from his biography is a politician in training and possibly chief cup cake baker! It would be ok for the PTA fund raising but certainly not a School Board Member.

The reality is both parties have excised their moderates. That was pretty clear in the Democratic debate. Jim Webb seemed like he was from another planet. It's pretty clear why he didn't run for re-election. Meanwhile you have Bernie Sanders up there driving the debate forward under a Red Banner.
