What's going on in Centreville in front on Sweetwaters. There has been a huge police and rescue presence there yesterday and today. It appears Bonefish and Sweetwater are closed.

They have a huge dig going on right now @28 and new braddock- the roads are open, but they have it lit up like a football field in that corner in the woods and are digging with backhoes right now. Gas company is out there and several police and fire men parked there as well. Hope nothing explodes- there are townhouses right there!!

Likely related to this mess from 1987? 28 years later and most people in the Singleton's Grove subdivision have no idea a major 32" fuel pipeline runs right under their development!

From the FCFD Facebook page

"Hazardous Materials Response to Centreville Gasoline Leak

Units responded to a strong odor of gasoline near the 6300 block of Multiplex Drive, at approximately 12:05 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2015, in the Centreville area of Fairfax County.

Hazardous Materials units and investigators subsequently responded and determined a strong odor of gasoline coming from multiple areas, including a dry creek bed, a sewer line, and a nearby retention pond. Investigators determined gasoline present in several of those areas and are taking all necessary precautions and are conducting operations to ensure the safety of residents in the area, locating the source, while simultaneously providing oversight of the gasoline clean-up. The amount of spilled gasoline is to be determined.

Colonial Pipeline has deployed workers to also investigate and inspect the pipelines in the area and have shut down several multi-product pipelines in the area. Miller Environmental is currently providing clean-up services at the scene.

The operation is also being supported by Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and Fairfax Water. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is also on scene. The department continues to work closely with Colonial Pipeline

Three businesses in the shopping center have been closed as a precautionary measure."

Let the lawsuits begin!

With any luck, all of Centreville will blow up and cease to exist.

This appears to be turning into a real shit show.

Numerous additional dispatches to the site and I believe there is some disagreement between authorities and the contractor even as late as this evening.

Will be interesting to hear the final outcome of what happened and why.

Glad I do not live anywhere near that area or other pipelines.

Hope nobody in the area takes a beating over all of this.

There are helicopters flying around the site low right now. Have been there for about an hour. Any idea what they are doing at 10pm at night?

Colonial Pipeline has sealed the leak with a sleeve. However, that is only temporary. Next week an entire section of pipe will be dug up and replaced. Over 3,000 gallons of petroleum product leaked out and has been recovered. 7 dead fish in a stormwater retention pond, but so far leak has been contained with no major environmental impact. They will also be flushing out many of the area stormwater pipes next week to try and further remove any pockets of petroleum products. The two restaurants are closed in an abundance of caution simply for safety concerns - sux for business.

Businesses will be made whole by Colonial's insurance. Sux for the restaurant employees, they'll probably get left high and dry

There's more to this than what is being told.

Privacy fences now fully surround the three areas.

Trucks entering have police escorts.

Armed guards say they can't tell us anything.

What did they find????
