I am looking for anyone who knows of places to drop a canoe in and float down for awhile and then pick out. Anyone have any good spots?

Little bit of a drive, but I've heard good things about the Cahulawassee River down in Georgia.

Roosevelt Island...or any where above the Memorial Bridge that you can park a car.

(Below Memorial Bridge there's no speed limit so the wake from a big yacht might capsize your ass.)

Or maybe Pohick Bay Park and head over towards the shallows near the north shore...shouldn't be any big wakes there.

Pohick Bay is great as someone said toward the noth where the eagle preserve is, but it's fun to go the other way with all the boats and waves. Algonquin is nice when the waters abate later in the summer. I was planning a trip to one of my favorite places the marshes near Bellehaven Marina tomorrow but it'll probally rain. It;s a great place with the islands protecting you from the chop. You can idle there in splendid isolation and pause and see a beaver or a water snake so near yet far from all the hubbub. But that's not down stream canoeing a idea of canoeing foreign to me. There's lot's of it way up the Patomic but it's not for me.
Ridin' round the county drinkin' from a jar
Put blue canoe up on top of the car
Hop in darlin' don't be a stranger
Sit back and relax cause there ain't any danger
We both get loose it spells trouble to me
Rather stay out here under the trees
There's a wind on the lake, stars in the sky
What else do you need to make you feel hi
I wanna ride with you
In my blue canoe
Baby we go ridin'
Slippin' and a slidin'
In my blue canoe
You bring the ice chest and I'll get the bait
Meet me at the lake and don't be late
Cause all this hangin' around is draggin' me down
I gotta get behind the wheel and get the hell out of town
Too many people too many cars
Too many nights in too many bars
My noggin's getting soggy and my spirits are saggin'
Time to take a ride in my blue water wagon
I wanna ride with you E
In my blue canoe

Baby we go ridin'

F#m A
Slippin' and a slidin'

F#m A E
In my blue canoe

The trip from Algonquin park to River bend park is great. about 5-7 hours and lots of cool stuff.. some mild rapids (class 1-3ish) and riffles, and its close. Stay on the VA bank for more rapids.

Just be careful, we have had lots and lots of rain. The Potomac is still at High water level ( code red, wtf ever that means) It may look calm on the surface. It is not!

Then there is the Shenandoah, pretty much any of that is good. The trip from rt 50 to rt 7 is good at this water level, it took me 7 hours last weekend. no rapids.

For a great float trip that is only passable this time of year, The North Fork of the Shenandoah. It is a beautiful trip, no rapids. But only good if the water is high.

For some local class 2-4 rapids, there is a section on goose creek, between rt 7 and the Potomac river, or if you are really adventurous, you can try Cub run stream after a rain. Just watch out for the strainers. Scout if possible!

What are you looking for? whitewater? casual float? Fishing?

You are in a great area for any of the above. The Shenandoah is nice in the early summer - lots of take outs - but lots of people . I like the north fork if I float the doah. We have had a lot of rain so the upper Rappahanock or Rapidan can be awesome. North and South Anne rivers are great. Get a Dellorme (sp) map and you can find your own floats on most any river.

My first canoe trip on the Shenandoah was unbelievable. The water levels
were perfect and we went 9 miles. Only had to portage a couple of times
due to rocks and shallows. Perfect weather too. The highlight of the day
though was when we were taking a break and kept hearing girls laughing
loudly and getting closer. It was a tour group of college girls from
Sweden all decked out in micro-bikinis. My friend and I just sat there on
the banks with our mouths and eyes wide open as they floated by waving and
smiling at us. Our girlfriends were right behind them so they wouldnt let
us go after them. Darn!

Ive used this place for years. Kayak, canoe and tubing.. they drive you upstream and let you float back to either a pickup point or their location on the river.

The bikini hatch on the Doah is a sight to behold. If you have any open cuts or wounds don't get river water on them. The Doah is a badly polluted river and the outfitters do not want you toknow that.

Harper's Ferry. You even have some white water up there, but it's not too bad.

You could also try Bull Run Marina on the Fairfax/PW County line near Clifton. It's not too far away and you could even row your way back to the Marina.

There's a couple of outfitters in Fredericksburg that can hook you up with a trip down the Rappahannock, or if you have your own drop/pickup arrangement you can put in at Kelly's Ford below the rapids.

There's some Class 2 or 3 rapids pretty much all the way. Gets pretty rough around the mouth of the Rapidan from what I hear (I haven't been downriver yet). I have been around the Kelly's Ford section below Remington, and after a rain that can get wild.
