Fairfax County Archery Deer Management
Date: September 09, 2015 01:24PM

Walking my dog this morning on a wooded Burke park trail, I saw new signs posted on trees: Fairfax County Archery Deer Management Program in Progress. Stay on the trails!

WTF? I walk this trail (as do many others) every day and haven't seen any deer in years. Seems to me like a bad combo: human traveled wooded trails interwoven with bow and arrow deer hunters stalking prey? Some people walk thru the woods. Many let their dogs off leash. Maybe I might go into the woods to take a pic of an owl? What if they miss? Shouldn't they restrict this far away from the trails?

Deer are like large rats. They are evil and kill your soul. The key is to get rid of these evil vermin near roads/homes so they don't destroy your car. Wear orange and keep your head low.

I need the archers to come to Vienna and kill the 8 and 10 pointers that are eating my flowers. I've got pics somewhere I'll post later. The ten is a BIG deer.

Some years ago when I was building the atrium at Meadowlark Gardens the swat guys came out for a couple of weeks and culled the deer with .17 Rem. They took a bunch of meat during the summer months. They would show up at like 4am and sit int the gazebos and zap them as they munched the flowers, hall them off before John Q Public was up and about.

Don't worry about safety they are professionals...

I don't have a bow & arrow. But I feed the deer, coyotes in my yard and the cougar who lives across the street.

They have to be out of sight and sound of established trails, paved or unpaved, in a deer stand, shooting down at a deer that is closer than 20 yards and standing still.

Not too many opportunities.

Yo Cletus, nobody said they were afraid of deer. They just don't want to plow into them on the way home.

I have found that bow hunters are generally more thoughtful about their killing. They generally want things very close -- close enough that blaze orange isn't necessary. This isn't a rifle with a scope where you can take a shot at 50+ yards and the bullet travels a 1/2 mile when it misses.

I will say that hunting deer around this area probably isn't very sporting. The deer are so used to human contact you can almost pet them.

The object isn't for sporting purposes. It's to cull the heard.

The fees hunters pay to hunt actually pay to effectively manage wildlife.

Wild life managers know what the herds are and know how much population control they need including selective hunting for doe and buck alike.

The county doesn't let just anyone hunt that calls in, they are prescreened and are good at what they do.

Hunting from tree stands is not dangerous for anything else but the deer because of the range required to properly hunt. A hunter can clearly see what is around better than someone on the ground.

Some people might not like the thought of this type of population control but would it be better to see sickly deer and more accidents?

Remember, we have no natural predators for deer in this urban area now.

Why is it the county does not have to follow the state hunting laws. There is no limit on how many the county archer individually can kill. State laws there is a limit and then the archer has to go buy a big game license extra after the initial license. Seems this is typical Fairfax County Government arrogance. Oh yeah it has been stated they are above following rules internally also guess the same thing applies here.

The archery program isn't about hunting for sport. It's about culling the herd
and nothing else. If you'd read above posts you'd realize that. You sound
like a typical Fairfax dumbshit who is too lazy to read the hunting laws
and obtain your knowledge of wildlife from watching Disney cartoons.
You'd better watch out for those bow hunters though. I hear one bolt from a
crossbow can kill thousands of people. Beware.

COMMONSENSE = Here is some info I got off the Disney Channel.Archers must comply with all requirements for licenses, permits, and Hunter Safety Education as mandated by Va Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries. All archers must also pass a proficiency test to demonstrate superior marksmanship in order to qualify for the program. Now I could have misspoken if the county has permission from DMAP,DCAP or the EAB.

COMMONSENSE - no where did I say I was opposed to the managed hunt. The deer are destructive to us gardeners and I live in a household of hunters, cook what they bag and donate to the Hunters for the Hungry if necessary. So no need to be so condescending in your reply.

Just because you do not see any deer when you take your daily urine-soaked elevator ride from your economy apartment to the 7-11 across the street to buy some 4-Loco doesn't mean there is not a deer problem in the more livable wooded areas of Fairfax.

Hunt away archers and thin the herd to sustainable levels. These skills may be needed to thin other out-of-control herds in the near future.

Yes. In a house on 11 acres with a lot of beautiful trees, flora and fauna.

Out here if an animal is feral or rabid and interfering with the natual order of life we can put it down.

Sorry, but where you live they feed and coddle them and encourage them to breed more of the same.

I guess we all make choices where to live, how to behave and with whom to associate.

Good luck.

Pretty sure what you are calling 'prowling' is called exercise.
Also, the type of fabric one wears has no correlation with gender choice of partner.
You might want to seek professional help for the anger issues, Expressing such hatred toward a persons fashion that you want them dead is a bit troubling.

You can wear spandex if you want Marcus. We won't judge.

The stupidest this about this post is that he/she SAW the SIGN, and then complains that it should be restricted far away from the trails.

It IS restricted. Stay on the trail and you won't get shot. Or if you're that concerned, stay out of the park during the clearly marked time frame.

If a regular Burke Lake resident ever gets hit with an arrow, this program will shut down quicker than you can say giant sun visor. You have nothing to fear.

So I support the deer management program. But the program is way too long. I enjoy wandering Fairfax County parks off the trails during the winter months when there are no ticks to be concerned about. But the entire non-tick season is now deer management season.

Bow hunters don't really concern me safety-wise so I still wander off trail even in the archery management areas. There is no legal requirement to stay on trail - the signs are just a warning. I have come across quite a few deer stands the last couple of years but have yet to disturb an actual hunter.

I will say yesterday I came across a deer stand in one very narrow neck of woods that was probably about 150 yards from a tot lot and maybe 100 yards from a basketball court. I know they were shielded by a small stand of woods but didn't seem like a good idea to me.

The deer already will definitely venture close enough to kill with a throwing knife and with a little patience the hunters could just hold out an apple and slit their throats.

Suburban deer are almost tame. They literally walk on to my back patio when I'm sitting out there. It's not uncommon for deer to be casually eating in one part of the yard When we are raking leaves or working in another part.

Please post a video of you doing this. I'd like to see it on YouTube.

I'm glad you walk the trail. I do as well. I'm not worried about hunters, but am worried about snakes and carry at all times. This is Virginia after all.

Why hasn't anyone called out all the dog walkers who let their dogs off leash? Wouldn't surprise me if you are one of them - "oh, my dog won't hurt you, he is friendly" I have heard more than one time as some idiot's dog is running full force on the trail and either bowling people over or scaring a kid. I'm more worried about that safety hazard than a hunter.

Hunting is usually at sunrise and sunset - when most people are not on the trails - since the parks close at dusk. Tree stands near a playground? So? Are children playing during the times the hunters are out? Doubt it.

I'm always amazed AND amused by the never ending ignorance & stupidity of Libtards. I especially love the childish lashouts and name calling. Totally hilarious and entertaining to the fullest.

PLEASE CONTINUE!!! LMAO {smh}
