New Sports Bar in Fairfax

Anybody have the skinny on this place?

http://www.chopssportsgrill.com/

According to Northern Va magazine, the owner from the Bungalow in Shirlington (which as closed) is opening it. Although the magazine called it "Chop's Crafthouse" FWIW. Looks like it will definitely be a sports bar though. Haven't driven past it but their sites say opens September.

The old Carlos O'Kellys location. Nothing ever does well there. It will be out of business in a year.

Seriously...what's up with that?

While Carlos O'Kellys was by no means gourmet or anything special, I certainly enjoyed it more than any other Mexican restaurant in the area. Good food, good service, at good prices. How the heck did they not make it there?

They were about as Mexican as Olive Garden is Italian.

Use to enjoy the occasional happy hour up there, and $.50 taco night.

Right. Ok. As I said, it was nothing special...we don't exactly have choice Mexican food here in the 703. What was your point?

Borgata. I am Mister Seven. Don't be a donk, rick.

Borgata, Borgata, Borgata. I owe them money, donks. It's a show. I'm psysed.

My favorite sports bar is Bungalows in Chantilly. For me a bar needs to have a great TV setup and also offer good sports specials. Bungalows does that the best in the area.

Primetime isn't bad but the setup is a little wonky.

I don't like the center bar. I'd rather have a long wall bar with everybody facing the same direction. Primetime could also use a few more TVs. A good sports bars should allow every person to be able to see all the NFL games at one time from all seats.

So what happened? You had a plan to bring it to Fairfax, I can even find engineering blueprints for the place online, made in April, but...didn't come around.

This city could use something there. I miss Carlos O'Kelly's.

Primetime sucks unless it's late at night & you need a loose skank. If you want to know where ugly people go to get laid, Primetime.

I met my wife there back in 1998. Been married ever since. She was shooting pool with some girlfriends, and my crew was playing "Golden Tee" on a Friday night after work.

Except Carlos O'Kelly's, which was there for what, 15 years?

Better said: Nothing has survived there since Woody's moved from across the street.

Lighten up, bad-ass. You don't HAVE "a crew" and you never did.

Hahahaha.

You lighten up.

People describing their friends as a "crew" has been used in a tongue-in-cheek fashion around here since the late 80's.

I suspect that is the way this fellow was using it.

No need to over-react.

I agree, no need to over-react, but...this is FFXU, so overreaction is pretty much the way things go around here.

Me and my crew met your wife there back in 1997. She was the stupid chick that got up on the tailgate of a Toyota 4 Runner, and was fucking guys for over 2 hours. She wasn't that attractive, but she had great legs, and loved the "Money Shot".

Chops Crafthouse opened today.

What they really need is a soft serve ice cream stand across the street.

Menu looks good but no prices. That usually means $150-$200 evening for 2 people. Is that the case here?

Went there the other night....Great food but very expensive. Ala carte menu. Side items such as fries or vegetables cost extra, even though the menu on line states that the sandwiches come with fries. Atmosphere is very open and quiet, but you have alot to look at with all of the televisions on every wall. looks like the owner is still deciding on how the place will be run. Time will tell!!!

Its way too expensive for casual, and people looking for upscale do not want televisions. Already doomed.

That wouldn't work because a woody is a kind of boner.

Carlos O'Kelly's opened in 1985-it was very popular at first because there weren't many Tex-mex restaurants in the area. The food wasn't the best, but it had a very faithful following for years. I worked there from 85 to 90 and made great friends and had a blast. Then I got to bring my kids there 20 years later! I was very sad when they closed around 5 years ago (?) but business had definitely declined. I'm impressed it was open as long as it was-around 25 years! But now with the new developments in Fairfax City and Mosaic/Merrifield, I'm afraid it's a doomed location. Very sad!

Carlos O Kelly's did consistently decent business until it closed. I know that we loved it as a relatively inexpensive go-to place for family or friends to hang out. And it closed because the rent was raised so high, which seems to have worked our poorly for the owner of the land. It's pure speculation, but high rent means a it would require a premium, expensive place to make it viable. I just don't think that location lends itself to such a restaurant. It needs to be something less expensive.

Anyone know how Chophouse is doing?

$.50 taco night was great, used to go there every Wednesday. I was buddies with the taco guy, one night we had him mix some shrooms in our tacos. Another night I was three schooners in and ordered a fourth, worried that I was one away from getting too hammered I walked out and drove home schooner in hand.

Half price burger night on Mondays. Great patio, we'd sit out there and play cards and sneak hits off the joint when the waitresses were inside.

I had heard before Carlos O'Kelly's moved out that the landlords were raising the. Rent dramatically. Seems like that has backfired. Instead of a constant stream of moderate income, it was and is now vacant much of the time, ewrning no rent.
