Chris Christie Wants to Track Immigrants Like FedEx Tracks Packages
Date: August 31, 2015 08:24AM

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said on Saturday that he plans to track illegal immigrants in the same way that FedEx tracks its packages if he is elected president next year.

Speaking at a campaign event in Laconia, N.H., the Republican presidential candidate said that he would ask the FedEx CEO himself, Frederick Smith, to create the system, the New York Times reports. “At any moment, FedEx can tell you where that package is. It’s on the truck. It’s at the station. It’s on the airplane. Yet we let people come to this country with visas, and the minute they come in, we lose track of them,” he said. “We need to have a system that tracks you from the moment you come in.”

Christie’s comments arrive as the Republican primary field, led by real estate mogul Donald Trump, proposes tighter immigration plans ahead of the Sept. 16 GOP debate.

“However long your visa is, then we go get you,” Christie said. “We tap you on the shoulder and say, ‘Excuse me. Thanks for coming. Time to go.’”

Christie did not say how exactly the FedEx tracking system, which scans packages’ bar codes, would be used to track undocumented immigrants. A FedEx spokesperson declined to comment."

A clever way for Christie to garner a little much-needed media attention, but the idea is unworkable. How, exactly, would a system to 'track' those here on temporary Visas work? Ankle bracelets? Implanted trackers?

Probably belongs in Off-Topic, but if you wanted to get really aggressive an implanted RFID chip would be a start. Doubt that the ACLU would allow this to happen, however. Put the chip in a very obvious location so that it would be easy to spot if someone removed it.

I am against this for one single reason. It will get expanded. Why can't we use it to track former felons? Oh that's a good idea. Why not use it to track children? Oh that's a good idea. Hey, we are tracking 30% of the population why not just track the rest? Oh that's a good idea.

Hmm. That is being nice. My preferred method of dealing with illegals is state sponsored execution. Just giving vermin what they deserve. Complicit liberals should get the exact same treatment, though a much slower and more painful state sponsored execution.

Mexico already has biometric passports as well as a youth ID card with embedded iris and fingerprint boimetrics and uses the data in that way. Earlier this month DHS announced that countries participating in the US visa waiver program will be required to use biometric passports. So not as out there as it might seem. The idea isn't to track people day-to-day but to better track who's crossing borders where and when and people over-staying their visa.

How, exactly, would bio-metrics enable the tracking of people who have over-stayed their Visas? How would the bio-metrics of these people be checked? If you don't track people day-to-day, how are you going to find them if they do not leave voluntarily when their Visas expire?

PS - Folks who cross the border illegally don't often carry passports of any kind.

Everyone should be Lojacked. It would eliminate kidnappings, fugitives, and missing children/elderly folks.

FedEx can only track packages that are in its custody and control.

FedEx can not tell me the whereabouts of a package that they dropped off at my house last week.

INS can already tell you the location of any individual that is in their custody

I notice that nowhere in this do you call for punishing the primary culprits, namely the businesses that employ these people and the businesses that profit from them being here.

The primary force that has been driving illegal immigration for the past few decades has not been bleeding heart liberals who felt sorry for the conditions in the homelands of illegals. It has not been Democratic operatives who saw electoral advantages in them being here. It has been the American farmers and other businessmen looking for ways to bump up their profits. If we started executing managers who employed three or more illegals, and started using civil forfeiture actions against money transfer companies that are used by illegals to send money home and against financial institutions that assist illegals with services from banking to loans, the problem would go away.

Maybe a variation of the process depicted in this move: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedlock_(film)

I thought Christie meant physical kicking illegal immigrants over a fence, just like they do Fed Ex packages. Give that man my vote!

You realize that passports have bar codes on them, right? We can use them to track people like fedex packages.

I thought it's already been established that the solution to this problem is a big electric wall with a moat?

1) If undocumented aliens had passports (a document) they wouldn't be 'undocumented'.

2) Those who overstay their Visas have bar-coded passports, it's true, but for the bar code to be read, the passport must be presented. If such a person were trying to avoid detection, why/when/where would they present their passport?

Not true. Many Mexican illegals carry passports and Mexican state IDs which they use for a variety of purposes. Doesn't mean that they are here legally and have authorized documents to be here. See for example the recent suit against TX by illegals challenging the state for not accepting Mexican IDs in order to obtain US birth certificates for children born in border hospitals.

Implement a series of regular required check-ins and tie that to any other forms of ID that are obtained using it (e.g., driver's licenses, work permits, SSNs, etc.). You may not catch someone going out of their way to intentionally hide, but you'll be able to track most relatively well and make hiding a lot harder. Most people legal or illegal are fairly easy to track in a variety of ways if we really wanted to. You're tracked a lot more than you may realize now. Whether you want to do all of that and the value derived is another matter.

it was on the radio AND in the legal papers in fairfaix:

it's illegal to hire illegal aliens

fx co gov supervisors specifically disrespected the law and profited from it, and as a parliament voted to have fx co an immigrant haven WITHOUT representation

they did this because they and their political friends were corrupt with foreign countries but also runnign business with one (fake) certified employee, lookign like a usa business, when you ordered the service always they'd send and illegal alien
