What happened to Fairfax County?

I grew up in just outside the beltway when that just opened and it was the edge of civilization. I would deliver the Washington Post, Evening Star and the Alexandria Gazette papers early in the morning dodging the drunks at 4AM on Telegraph road and collect the dues late at night confused by the old women in their nities and the perverts in their underware. I remember watching DC smoke in 68 from my vantage point atop the "Big Pine". I remember a bike ride from RT 1 up Rolling Road to Burke Lake on a tar and chip road and only encountering one or 2 cars along the way. The only black folks I ever saw were trash men on trash day or the school janitor, that's what we called them then.
we only locked the car doors when we drove through Alexandria. I washed dishes at the Eisenhower Holiday INN and Cooked At the RT 1 location.
Many of the threads on this site I can relate to. The Remy cripts, Bars, Hillbilly haven, Ft Hunt high burning, Springfield Mall, the tower collapse, the pictures, cap center concerts and the dead or missing girl stories that were so rare.
My parents passed away there and I haven't been back in some time.
I connected with an old girlfriend a while back who is retired and still lives in the area along with a bunch of losers that are always trying to get another high school reunion organized. Facebook is their only friend in their lonely existance. I Stayed with this girl a few times and temporarily joined the robots walking our dogs pretending to pic up their crap before and after an insane commute to a worthless job. Newington 95 has always been a nightmare.
Enter the illegals.....celebrate diversity! Children First! Hope and Change!
wow! Ant WTF with those stupid toll lanes for a mile or two? I want to throw a handful of nails into them every time I pass. The homes are priced 10 times what you can afford.
Fairfax County is a depressing sight and I'm glad that I'm long gone. It was once a great place to grow up but now it is to DC like Oakland is to San Francisco. Addios Ameigos!

When I moved here in 1987 the "migrant workers" were white people from West Virginia. They were the women that worked as maids cleaning hotels and houses, they were the men that worked construction. They would leave WV Monday morning and work all week here in NOVA. They stayed at the Hotels ( I guess you could call them that) on Rt. 29 near what is now the FFX County Govt Center and along Rt. 1 and commute back home to WV on Friday afternoon. Then "they" started to let the illegal scum into the country. These fuckers would work for lower wages and live 10 to a 2 bedroom apartment in Shenandoah Crossing. The WV folks could not compete and went on welfare in WV. The 10 fuckers living in a single apartment at Shenandoah Crossing qualified for government benefits in addition to the low salary they accepted. Here we are almost 30 years later and our entire country is fucked. Yes, Fairfax County used to be a great place to live. It will never be that way again.

You should hire one to get your head out of your ass.

Mexican immigration has been going DOWN since 2007.
Unauthorized illegal immigrants only make up 5.1% of US Labor force.
Unauthorized immigrants only make 3.5% of the US population.

Good, get rid of the 5.1% and we will have 100% Americans employed and no need for food stamps, welfare, EBT, WIC and all the other hidden costs.

37% of the federal prison population are illegals.

According to FY 2014 USSC data, of 74,911 sentencing cases, citizens accounted for 43,479 (or 58.0 percent), illegal immigrants accounted for 27,505 (or 36.7 percent), legal immigrants made up 3,017 (or 4.0 percent), and the remainder (about 1 percent) were cases in which the offender was either extradited or had an unknown status.

Broken down by some of the primary offenses, illegal immigrants represented 16.8 percent of drug trafficking cases, 20.0 percent of kidnapping/hostage taking, 74.1 percent of drug possession, 12.3 percent of money laundering, and 12.0 percent of murder convictions.

On CNN in July 2015:

73,665
The number of inmates in state and federal prisons who are not U.S. citizens, according to the latest prison population report from the Bureau of Judicial Statistics. That's about 5% of the total prison population.

73,665 x $31,286 average per year per prisoner = $2,304,683,190 to house illegals in prison

That sure is a whole bunch of potentially free college tuition or food/clothes for the poor.

But, no, keep on drinking the progressive liberal kool-aid. It's obviously better for the US to house illegals than it is to take care of our own.

I moved here in the mid-80's, in Lorton off Pohick road close to Rt.1. And it was still a paradise then. I would drive from Lorton to Burke to see my girlfriend, using Hooes rd. and Silverbrook road, and hardly saw another car the whole way.

The other day I was looking at an FCPS elementary school's website. The school has 8 ESOL teachers. 8. A middle career (about 12 years experience) teacher costs the county about $145,000 a year. That's over a million dollars a year in one school just to educate kids who I'm 99% sure weren't born here. All those ESOL teachers are hired on top of the regular classroom teachers.

Racism is the first charge of the intellectually lazy. Fairfax County has thrown open its doors to people from all over the world, and many of them are very needy. In doing so it is running up some huge bills, is becoming quite crowded, and is changing at a breakneck rate.

What is so racist about asking if that is a good idea?

The standard of living in Fairfax County is close to unrivaled. There are a few locations in the U.S. that could be included in a lively debate, but not many. If an individual experiences distress because of a wish to live in a place with a homogeneous population, or is disturbed by being in a location with a highly-educated, high-achieving population, there really isn't any remedy, other than relocation. OP sounds like he took that route.
