Vienna is one of the top 50 places to live

Vienna is no stranger to MONEY’s list: this quaint D.C. suburb ranked no. 3 in 2013, the last time we ranked small cities. It has a vibrant downtown, with mom-and-pop shops, locally owned restaurants, and historic buildings like the Freeman House, a country store built in 1859. Plus there’s plenty of outdoor recreation, including biking and walking paths along the 45-mile W&OD Railroad track, and low unemployment due to the town’s proximity to Tysons Corner (the two overlap), where Booz Allen Hamilton, Capital One, and Hilton Worldwide are headquartered.

Vienna has always had a certain feeling to it. A bit different then Fairfax Co. 35 years ago I worked part time in Vienna and the people talked about it.
It probably because its a town with its own police dept, a Mayor I guess. A town public works dept. Of course they use many Fairfax County services..schools mostly, but some of the schools were even town of Vienna like the old elementary school with County teachers. Clannish in a way years back, but lots of Little League games, kids activities, parades down main street, Halloween, The Vienna Inn, The Rexal drug store. and many others.

Careful with that kinda talk. Th' developers, the mattress store owners, and th' town council don't like people talkin' bad 'bout Vienna. People who talk too much wind up rolled up inna mattress cover on a dumpster on Mill Street....

My son was in "the spectrum," and he did poorly in school until we moved to Vienna. Now he doesn't use his inhaler half as much as he used to, he's almost off Ritalin, and doesn't act out when he sees the color green...the vibration of the color green really hurt his eyes. Now he's a total joy to be with and he's doing well in his AP classes.

Vienna saved my son...

With four mattress stores, Vienna might be Washington’s most genuine bedroom community. But Vienna is far from a sleepy suburb. A fierce community spirit supports a small but quaint historic center and a growing number of home and design sources.

That's what I came up with as well. By comparison to actual nearby areas, Vienna does not seem to be any sort of mattress store Mecca at all. It seems that the town's desirability stems more from its premium location, the quality of its living space, and the effects of its activist local government.

"Activist local government"?

They really like raising tax revenue, too. (Why did they add a meals tax but not a mattress tax?)

Plainly, you have never met an actual developer. The Vienna zoning commission is long and well noted for being sticklers for the laws and regulations. They don't apologize for it at all, nor should they. They have taken up the cause of preserving the small-town feel of Vienna while still seeking progress, and done a good job of balancing those two demands. Developers hate them for it. They see only short-term profits going up in smoke. Too bad for them. Good for the rest of us.

Preserving the small-town feel of Vienna has been the prime concern of Vienna government for generations. This is one of the advantages of having an actual local government. You can have and protect a town identity in ways that mere Census-designated places simply cannot. Like it or not, that's exactly the sort of thing that helps get you on "Best 50 Places to Live" lists.

The Town of Vienna is four square miles -- twice the size of the City of Falls Church for example. Homes built in the years before the Great Bush Recession and now again during the Great Obama Recovery are larger than what was built in the 1950s and 1960s, both in Vienna and everywhere else. The typical new home of 50-60 years ago came with small bedrooms, small closets, small windows, small kitchens, small bathrooms, and no central A/C. People today want and can afford more and better. And since Vienna's original subdivisions provided so many quarter-acre lots and larger, new homes with higher square-footage can be built than would be possible in some place where population density was much higher and lots of less than 10,000 sqft were the norm.

The schools are run by the county and can be redistributed at any time. There is no "actual local government control" exercised by Vienna.

A few, but that can be found in many areas in NoVa.

Anyone in the vicinity of Merrifield, Chantilly, Dun Loring, Reston, Herndon, Falls Church, Arlington, Fairfax, etc. etc. etc. can say the same thing.

Neither of which is actually located within the actual town or even walkable by a great many of its residents.

Well if that's their objective, then they've obviously badly lost that battle and done a piss poor job. Vienna having a 'small-town feel' is about as realistic as eating sauerkraut at Disney's Epcot Center is like living in Germany. It's yet another over-crowded suburban wasteland.

Brought to you by the "Vienna zoning Commission" (which doesn't actually exist. Vienna zoning decisions are first considered by a Zoning administrator and then appealed to the Board of Zoning Appeals if the applicant so desires).

So in one picture, we have a ludicrously designed eye sore next to a shanty both of which are in the shadow of a water tower. "welcome to Vienna!"

You all are so cute when you fall flat on your already grossly ugly and distorted faces. Better start saving up your nickels and dimes (assuming any of you actually has something as large as a dime) for a trip to the annual Vienna Oktoberfest, the small-town harvest festival and celebration that will be held along Church Street in Hip and Historic Vienna on October 3, 2015, from 11am to 7pm. Beer, bratwurst, shopping, music -- all stuff you'll never see happening on the streets of where you live. Saps.

Get some new material, deadbeat. The house on the right in your photo was torn down years ago. It was replaced by a home on the same scale as the one you call "the eyesore" -- meaning of course that you could not in a million years afford the place. It's FMV is estimated at a million and a quarter, by the way.

Yes there are. NoVa is bigger than Fairfax no matter how you define it.

Did I say Fairfax county? No, I said NoVa. NoVa is bigger than Fairfax no matter how you define it.

Oh, and I don't live in a CDP like you.

Last year does not qualify as "years ago." Get a calendar, Major Buffoon.

Rest assured, if I had an inclination to live under a water tower, the cost of the home would not be the impediment.

Sure, you can have a cheap chili-dog and beer at Vienna Inn while trying not to fall through the floor, then go mattress shopping and try not to get hit by cyclists in their spandex. But then if you do get knocked over by a cyclist, you have to try not to get raped by an illegal immigrant. Then, if you don't get raped, you can go to Tyson's Corner and try not to get mugged by some blacks that took the Metro in from PG County. At the same time, try not to get bamboozled by some middle eastern at a stand in the mall, or knocked over by texting teens with their heads in their phones. After THAT, you can sit in the shittiest traffic ever.

What did I miss?

Yes, asshole. Like the mattress stores. Of which there are four in Vienna, although two of them are kind of upscale and just blend into the background of bistros and boutiques. If you had the keys to your bedroom door, you might have gotten out enough by now to realize that although in so many other ways, Vienna is actually no place special when it comes to mattress stores. They are to be found all over the place.

LOL! I'm the one who put the price tag on the "eyesore", and the same seven figures would apply to many homes in the vicinity. It seems like a weekly thing that an old 1950's home in the area goes down, and an upscale new model takes its place. It's enough to leave the out-of-date dullards in the dust.

I'm not sure that you can. The long-term health effects of all this seething Vienna-envy and butthurt are likely to be far more costly than you are able to admit.

What IS quite apparent here is that you've got Big Lots bunches of butt-hurt that have been piled up on you by posters both here and at City-Data. Not enough detail to tab those here, but the ads for your fear of the C-D poster "Major Barbara" are brighter than the Las Vegas strip. You seem to suggest here that this person has been banned from C-D but see the below. The user-name "Denton56" has been banned. The user-name "Major Barbara" has not. Of course, the most likely thing is that the actual person behind "Denton56" simply created a new account and continues to post at C-D. Similarly it may be that the actual person behind "Major Barbara" uses other handles as well to deliver his or her torments upon you. That's just the way the world works. In the end, the inferior parties get beaten up by their betters. LOL!

There are 50% more mattress stores per square mile in the City of Falls Church than there are in the Town of Vienna. But even if you lived in some god-forsaken CDP nowhere near either of those places, you would have no problem finding a mattress store readily at hand. They are like banks and drug stores. They are everywhere.

How was I supposed to know it was torn down? Indicate some sort of proof that I had knowledge it was torn down. It's not like I venture to the shit side of Vienna to discover which of the many shanties in Vienna are still standing. I'm willing to bet There are still plenty by the way.
