Empire aka Jaxx possible replacements

With Empire/Jaxx closed, what venues in Northern Virginia or in DC could take over the void?

Fuck always going to Baltimore Soundstage or Ottobar for shows.

I know! Let's put a movie theatre in there! It would be the perfect space!

Add in some rocking chairs and call it the Rocking Chair Theatre!

Oh wait, that's what WAS there originally. Maybe the Burger Chef could come back, too.

Let's call it Chesapeake Bay Seafood House!

get all the seafood...you can eat!

Or, we could open up a jeans store and call it something like Zippers or Pants Corral.

RIP Jaxx! Will probably never have a need to go to that shopping center- or even that particular area of Springfield- ever again.
Other than Balls Bluff, the State Theater, and the 9:30 Club on occasion; the metal scene in DC and Nova is kapoot. Richmond or Baltimore, take your pick.

Whoever takes over the location next needs to talk to two people:

1) Jay Nedry, to find out how he was able to make a go of it as Jaxx for 17 years.
2) Jason Malhoyt, who took it over and turned it into Empire, as an example of what *not* to do.

Empire was obnoxiously flashy for a metal venue. Jaxx had the perfect formula they just needed a better crew working there

Let's move Hudson Trail Outfitters in there! That store does quite well in old movie theater spaces.

There...fixed it for you...

I've said this in a number of other threads but it bears repeating...Regardless of genre, if you have a unique sound or look...your music and your band are going nowhere in the current commercial/pop music environment and market.

Record companies are less likely to take risks anymore on up and coming musical artist and bands. If you don't look or sound like someone who has already made it big...you will not get a record deal. If a record exec isn't certain you'll sell records and downloads...you're not getting signed. The days of "Here's a 3 album deal...if you don't get it going after that, you're done." are over.

I like how Weird Al Yankovic (while I'm not a fan of his music) has figured out, "Screw the album format! Screw record companies! I will release my songs as singles every time I write one and make them available for download the day after they are mastered!" It's sad that that action will kill the album format but, he's figured out a way to stay alive as a musician. Say what you want...the guy is successful. Hugely successful.

Although I'm a big fan of hard rock and metal music made between 1967 and 1991 (with some exceptions), hard rock and metal are seen as sub-genres at best and fads at the worst. There are still a few bands recording now that are tapping into that retro vibe and channeling the sounds of yore but, metal as we understand it is NEVER coming back. Fortunately, it's well preserved in a variety of different media. If you like this music, get on Pandora (if you can stand some short ads, it's free) and start up a metal station there. You will be amazed at what you get turned onto that you didn't know was out there...

I'm old so, I don't pay attention to music made in this century but, I got a real treat last year...the band Tame Impala came up on my playlist and I'm sold. If you like early Pink Floyd, I encourage you to check them out...preferably with headphones cranked.

I stopped going there because the venue sucked balls. Terrible location, crappy stage, no storage area, horrible load in/out, crappy lights, and a sound system that was significantly past it's time. That was the worst part, it ALWAYS sounded bad. I'm not blaming the audio engineer, it was the system, the room, and the floor space.

If anyone is going to open a new venue, it needs to be just that, NEW. A building designed to be a live music venue will draw better bands a pull a better crowd. 9:30 isn't struggling, it has it's deficiencies due to space but it sounds good and is built out to be a legitimate venue.

When Jaxx became Empire they just put a new coat of black paint on a failed business model.

Blackie's House of Beef - why not bring that back and pop it in there? It doesn't have to be in downtown Springfield.

Superb notion...I tell you what...I couldn't dance that country line dance bullshit a lick. Not one fucking lick. And I still pulled more sweet ass from hanging out there than anywhere in a 50 mile radius.

The best part about it was...you'd knock the bottom out of one chick this week? And then go back the next week, see the girl you fucked the previous week, wave and then hang out that night with her best friend and take her best friend home and give HER the stones. Then go back the week after that and nail some new piece of ass. Never any drama, never any bullshit. Just show up, get your drink on and take home some pussy.

2 jimmy hats was ALWAYS the way to go of course...

Sucks to see this. Lots of good memories at Jaxx.

Broke my nose in the pit at Superjoint Ritual probably 10 years ago. Seeing Phil in a small venue like that was great.

Partial List..
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush
Black Label Society
Dokken
Combichrist
Assemblage 23
Testament
Kreator
Napalm Death
Nitzer Ebb
Ministry

I remember seeing Lamb of God there when there were just starting out and called Burn the Priest. Also, In Flames in their mid-90s hay day. The best shows I think I saw there were Dimmu Borgir on their Puritanical tour, and more recently Death.

Overall the venue was too shitty. They could have invested and made it a lot nicer to attract a more contestant and diverse crowd.

Best venue in the area now by far is a the Fillmore.

Not anymore. Baltimore is booking all the metal shows now. Before Jaxx/Empire, it was divided up evenly.

In the late 90's they played there annually...

I remember going to Jaxx a lot in my youth. Saw Biohazard, Anthrax, Sepultura, etc. Anyways Jay was an absolute loser geek I hated that guy. Fucking prick. Treated the artists like shit, underpaid them, and all sorts of sketch shit. Which is why I didn't feel bad when Bad Luck 13 played there and destroyed the venue back in 2001. They played a show with Dying Fetus and fucking wrecked the place. Split the stage in threes, their roadie threw a cinderblock through the window, trash can against all the bottles on the bar, fire on the floor, whole place was wrecked. You shoulda seen the look on that faggot's face that night lol

So what venues in NOVA could possible replace Jaxx/Empire?

Driving up to Baltimore constantly can be a real hassle, especially during the weekday.
