I started shooting about a year ago and have been to NRA, Blue Ridge and Elite Shooting Sports (ESS).

NRA is safe, convenient and well-managed with attentive RSOs. Since it is a 10-15 minute drive I can easily go in the evening or on the weekend.

Blue Ridge felt a bit shady...the RSOs were barely present and the many of the people there seem like wanna-be gang bangers. Not the best environment IMO.

ESS in Manassas is a bit of a hike (35-40 minutes), but they have 25, 50 and 100 yard ranges and it is a great place if you are going with a group of friends. This is one of the new 'guntry' club style ranges with a lounge area, food and TVs.

Pricing at all three is about the same...ESS is my favorite, but NRA is great if all you want to do is put 100 or so rounds on a target.

#1 USMC ranges at Quantico. Dont know if civilians can use that any more, they had one range there that they let us shoot IHMSA shooting but that was more then 30 years back. I think they might still have some NRA hi power match's there.

#2 Fairfax County Police Range. Out Rt 50 by the police driving track . Ok You asked.

#3 The NRA range

Sharpshooter's is a decent place. Some of the staff have been there a long time. Good folks.

"The Dungeon" AKA Blue Ridge is ok. Years ago it was a smoke stack, don't know about today.

Clarks Bros a old favorite for over 40 years now. With a rangemaster its a lot better then back in the day when it was a bit like the Old West, bullet holes in the roof ceiling, nothing lived behind the range then for at least 3 miles.

I went to Fairfax Rod and Gun Club 40 years ago, a great range and now and then more $$ then I can afford, plus Fast Terry would certainly black ball me for membership.

The Range in Stafford Co. 8 dollars for a quick 1/2 hour 16 the hour cheap and a decent place. Out of the way for many in NOVA

Never have been to that new place in Gainesville. or the one in Loudon mOr the ESS.

I miss Shooters Paradise in Woodbridge, long while back now, had a bit of a strange range like on two levels, but they had loads of Dillon reloading equipment (my fav) dies, bullets, powder and the rest at good prices till they became a "Boutique" holsters only then the place burned down. Never came back.

Yes I had been in the Old Annandale Range and looked over the old Star reloading machine 40 + years back but never shot there as it was too expensive for my pocket.

Speaking of reloading machines, "The Range" has a bunch of the big Dillon's, he must reload for the place, You can bring your own ammo or reloads too. And he does have some rule that if you buy his ammo you have to shoot it all up there.

Dad and son, standing there sideways trying to clear a jam in a semi-auto with the gun pointed right at me. I stepped out of the way and quietly asked them to point the gun downrange, and they looked at me like "What's your problem?"

How do they monitor what ammo you are shooting? Can't you just buy a box then shoot ammo you brought with you?

They are wise to the "Smuggle Boxes" Putting ammo in their boxes with their stickers on it . You either have a receipt or not. Now with .22Lr ammo you could have bought the box 5 years ago.. and I have never seen them really get on someone's ass as they know that .

I can't blame Steve Clark
at all for his policy as the insurance to cover the range is very expensive.

If you reload buy components at Clarks and keep your receipts. They realize that they may be out of some things like pistol powder , but they have the other components, Its pretty simple . They have also posted statements that if they are out of any ammo you want to shoot and you have some you got some where else fell free to shoot. Buying their ammo is a small extra cost for a fun days shoot and an good ride out to the once was "country" just don't head that way weekdays about 2 pm on. Go early on weekdays from FX due to traffic.

NRA range pretty much sucks, nasty range officers who are all over you about everything and cramped shooting positions. Employees yucking it up with nearby shooter while you are trying to shoot. Had enough of being hassled (others have said the same thing). Will never go back. I'm letting the NRA membership lapse and will be shooting where the staff wants you to enjoy yourself. The best one was where they made me take a target down (bottle type) because it had "ears" and looked like a person.

It's nearby so that is where I go. Sometimes the equipment is a bit sketchy but staff aren't idiots.

That happened last time I went to Blue Ridge Arsenal, except it was Grandpa, dad, and grandson. One was shooting and the two other genus' were trying to clear a jam behind him and shot the floor 3-4 feet from me. They were immediately 86'd.

A'hole range officers keep things safe. They're doing their job. See previous posts about Blue Ridge Arsenal.

problem. If they're hassling you maybe it's because you consistently
fuck up and ignore the rules. So they threw you out eh??

No I picked my stuff and left , called the manager and they agreed there had been complaints about an individual there. Plenty of other ranges to go to. A couple of the range officers there should develop a few people skills. Im all for safety. You must be one of the regular fat assholes that go there and run their mouths the whole time they are on the line.

I'll second this experience. I was shooting there once and two idiots behind me were waving around LOADED guns as they were talking. I don't care if your safety is on. Don't point a loaded gun at me on a range.

Everybody I've talked with about the NRA says the same thing. The NRA range has a lot "creepy" people. When I go to a range I'm there to shoot. It's NOT a social event to walk around and chat with other shooters.

Leave people alone at the range and get some friends to hang out.

They have actually relaxed the ammo rule since some loads even they can't get. Like 22 long rifle.

Sounds like bullshit. I've been there many, many times and it tends to be a very well operated range. They don't have much tolerance for people doing stupid shit. It may happen now and then since people are idiots but that's the great exception vs the rule.

The worst. Just the absolute worst range experience, ever.

I recently made my first trip to this local NRA range with a family member. We're both lifelong, trained firearm operators. I've never experienced such a dismal range visit as the one we endured at this location. From the holier-than-thou desk clerks who talk down to anyone and everyone they can, to the --radically-- over-bearing range official, we've vowed never to entertain the thought of returning and will warn others of wasting their time and money.

- Over the course of 60 minutes I was interrupted 15+ times by the official who talked down to me as if I was mere child operating a wildly foreign object. To the contrary, I'm a full grown adult with decades of firmly entrenched firearm safety and government service. Never once, in 30+ years of range time, have I been told I must "dry fire practice" before firing more of my own live ammo, yet at the NRA range it seems to be standard practice for the official to blanket every booth with unjust criticism born from a clear power-trip complex.

- Everything, and I do mean everything, our every move, was taken as a chance for the official to stop us and attempt to put the wrath of the NRA gods into us about grip, more grip, grip technique again, only sending targets 20 feet down-rage (wtf), grip theory, more grip, how the official knows more about 9mm's than we do, how to eject a chambered round (if you didn't CONSTANTLY interrupt us, we could have properly emptied our clip). Seriously, we couldn't get through 15 shots without an awkward violation of personal space. Had we been newcomers with no safety knowledge not hitting our targets, sure - talk us up. But we were placing close groupings, never rapid firing, following every rule in the book. There was zero, and I mean zero, cause for the meddling this official made.

- Having to spend ten bucks on a multiple choice safety "test" (the accompanying rules sheet has the answers on it) just to be able to get to the point where you can spend the hourly rate is a cash grab. This is not shared with new customers over the phone when inquiring about rates.

- Only being allowed to fire at the eye-level 2 inch wide section of your target. Are you kidding me? What's the point of a 24x36 target? You end up spending half the range time stapling, sending, and returning the targets up and down range just to comply with this rule.

- The overall crowd, which granted is not up to the NRA, was inexperienced youngsters with high powered rifles. A lot of "bro speak" and swearing. Why was this not handled by the official, but every step of ours was under a microscope? Ridiculous.

- Rifles and pistols are fired in the same range. Major downside, noise-wise.

I should have never strayed from my usual ranges like Blue Ridge, Bull Run, and the like.

If you're a gun enthusiast with a clear head who wants to spend some hard earned cash on a **relaxing hour of range-time solitude** (the way it should be), stay far away from the NRA HQ.

Been there many times and I've never seen that. The only time that I've seen them interrupt anyone shooting is (a) when they're doing something stupid, (2) when there's some general range condition, or (3) when there's a group there for lessons. Which there are a lot of at various times. Maybe they thought they were with some instruction group.

It's a test which just reinforces the basic range and safety rules. I kind of like the practice myself since you don't have knuckleheads just rolling in completely clueless. The need for a range pass is clearly noted on the web site.

Not true other than as far as basic common sense goes. You don't want people mounting targets so high or low or to the sides so that people are shooting into the target tracks, ceiling, walls, or floor as a result of shooting at too great of an angle. Which I have seen there and at various other ranges. You'd think that it was near impossible to do but they're constantly having to replace the overhead target runners because idiots shoot the damn things. The point of aim needs to put bullets in the trap. That's the basic rule. People shoot full-size silhouette targets all the time.

The overall crowd tends to be about as diverse as any you'll find anywhere, including more women than I've seen at any other range. Besides that this is suspect on its face. How the fuck do you hear "bro speak" when everyone has hearing protection on? You're doing good to convey basic-speak.

That is true. Good and bad to that depending on what you want to shoot. I'd rather have most rifles next to me than some guy with a .357 or .44 blasting away.

If they think that Blue Ridge is a good range then that pretty much qualifies the whole review. In fact, it almost sounds like it may have been written by a competitor like BR.
