I found an affordable house in Springfield, Crestwood ES district. Walked up to register and found out the school is pushing 80% hispanic. Im worried I made a bad decision.

Ah, you were hoping for a higher percentage of Hispanic students than 80%. 80% is pretty darn reasonable in this area, so I'd embrace it.

That number they gave you is low. At Crestwood the Latino population is more like 90%. If your child is white, likely to be the token white child in the class! Maybe you should have researched schools a little bit before buying the house. Just so you know, the middle school and high school the Crestwood feeds to has almost the same demographics.

Well, Crestwood's student body is actually 66% Hispanic.

Its principal, Nardos King, is arguably the worst in the County.

Plus for some reason she insists on hiring a horse psychologist, Flip Flippen to train the teachers.

MVHS' scores suck, as does the school.

Your child will be fine, Crestwood has great teachers.

You however, may need to start seeing your neighbors as people, and not a demographic.

Your child has a big advantage. He will learn Spanish. It's an immersion school. Don't listen to these naysayers. It's a very nice community.

MVHS was the school to be at pre 1990's!!!! Demographics have changed for the worse since the '90's!

BS post. You only noticed the huge Hispanic population in the area when you went to the school?

I moved into the Sangster ES/Irving MS/West Springfield HS pyramid. All majority white schools with great test scores. My child can walk to Sangster and go play with his WHITE classmates. He's gonna have a great childhood.

I would be more worried about the high percentage of kids that are on F&RL and the percentage of kids who are not English proficient than I would be about the racial breakdown of the student body.

If you have classrooms filled with large numbers of students with limited English proficiency or who make other demands on the teaching resources, that will mean less time that the teacher can spend addressing the needs of your child. If you have schools filled with large numbers of kids on F&RL that will mean fewer resources will be made available to your school, and likely that the school will make more demands on your time and resources.

Your children will have fast-track into MS-13 membership. Lucky them!

Well, MS-13 DOES need to have sheep around to rob. Be sure your kid has some cash so when he/she is robbed, they are not stabbed.

Haha I remember when I went to crestwood about 25 years ago, I was the token Latino there. Times have changed! I'm glad my family moved out of Springfield before the invading horde of illegals came. I got a great education there. I wouldn't dream of sending my child there now.

I began at Crestwood Elementary in 1980 and ended up at Lee High School. Graduated in 1993. The school was 60% White when I graduated. I got an awesome education.

My parents moved in 1997 to South Riding. Glad they did, right before the extreme decline in Springfield.

The better FCPS schools tend to be located in the Northern/Central/Western parts of the county (exclude Herndon)

The Eastern part of the county has horrible schools.
