Mostly only by hipsters who really want to be living in DC/NYC but can't afford to.

To the rest of us it's just more dense-packed suburban.

Just like stupid Fairfax a county not a city. Alexandria and Fairfax City keep much more of taxes the Fairfax or Stupid Arlington.

Fairfax has many new stupid semi high rise wood frame luxury apartments now, Very good for lazy marijuana smokers to torch off late at night. Arlington is trying to catch up . You pay out your ass for the luxury.

Arlington on the whole isn't urban but, head on over to Culmore sometime...especially at 2am.

Culmore is of course in Fairfax County at all hours of the day. Actual Arlington meanwhile varies considerably, from old-growth high-density to smart-growth high-density to medium- and tree-lined low-density residential, some of that enjoying wonderful river views. As in so many other places, it is true in general that the region becomes less urban as one moves outward from the city center. Arlington being just across the river from DC, it has a higher urban factor than say Clarke County located some 65 miles away.

Everywhere is "over-priced" if you can't afford it. Low-lifes must learn to live within their means. While residing somewhere not nearly as nice as Arlington.

Tell me about it. I'm stuck here in a house that I sunk too much money into and can't afford to move anywhere better.

It is if you consider DC as a whole urban.

Because Arlington is comprised of the remnants of the Northwest and Southwest quadrants, it has many of the same characteristics of DC.

There are large swaths of office buildings in Crystal City, Rosslyn, Pentagon City, and Ballston that are akin to the Downtown, NoMa, Foggy Bottom, etc. areas of DC.

The residential areas are similar as well. In many areas of DC that many of us do not visit, the housing stock is similar. DC and Arlington have many tree rich neighborhoods with single family homes that are situated on a quarter of an acre or less. Of course, you will find larger lots in both jurisdictions, but it is not the norm. You have a variety of apartment and condos of varying quality in each jurisdiction also. Finally, there are row houses in each jurisdiction as well.

You made out better than many. Much of Vienna is much nicer than most of Arlington. Even if you did miscalculate badly, at least you are suffering for it in a quality location.

I'm not in Vienna. Except when I go to the trifling train museum to yell at the kids and their stupid goober parents who take the wrong route through town.

It's like DC NW urban which has a mix of dense office, dense mixed-use, dense residential, and less dense residential with mostly detached homes as you go out.

It has a higher population density than Los Angeles and Seattle, I'd say that qualifies it as "urban". It's not as dense as the big east coast cities, but neither are most US cities.

Yes, but we keep them concentrated in a few neighborhoods. Guess where 90% of the crime comes from? The other 10% comes from the thugs taking metro in to Pentagon City. Anytime I go to that mall I walk out thinking I need to get a concealed weapon permit.

I grew up in Arlington, from 1964.

Arlington has changed quite a bit over the years. In the early 1970's when Metro was being built, this clearly changed the depressed and abandoned areas around Court House and Clarendon. Building Route 66 in the late 70's, early 80's also clearly changed the character of parts of the area. I recall as a kid seeing all the abandoned property that was the Rt 66 right of why that had been purchased and many houses torn down. It seems this sat empty and abandoned for 15 years as I recall. Arlington has its Urban areas where the highrises are closer to the river/DC. Clarendon, Crystal City, Roslyn are clearly more urban.

My mother still lives in the house I grew up in and she not far from Glebe & Old Dominion and this area is clearly not Urban except for the growth and expansion of Marymount University.

Arlington County Board has clearly been trying to grow and expand Arlington over the years, but there is quite a few areas that will never be converted to more Urban sections.

Arlington is about a third of the way through its suburban to urban transformation.

North Arlington, Old upper middle class, Some wealthy Asians.

Central Arlington, douchie kids, young and wealthy dune coons and some hipsters.

South Arlington, Fags, Nigs, Spics.
