I've seen the posts where people claim to have contacted the FBI, Fairfax cops, lawyers etc. They threaten investigations into Cary, suing Cary etc. I've then seen the responses to them basically stating stupid poster, you can't win that law suit and clearly everyone knows the cops could give a shit unless someone actually gets hurt, and they would be correct. But here's the tip...lawsuits need not be about winning. They are about tying up or outright completely depleting your opponents resources. From what I've seen Cary's are relatively limited and I sincerely doubt the trolls on here are going to come to their hero's rescue if the shit does hit the fan for him. He'll be out on his own faster than anyone who was on his list...and yes it is HIS list, he is responsible for this specific posting. In any event...back to the lawsuits. When you file a lawsuit in VA, the defendant MUST respond, or the plaintiff (i.e. you, if you are the filer) wins a default judgement. I believe Cary has had some experience with this:

In looking at the data for Fairfax, its very clear that very few of the accounts belonging to women were either legit or even being used.

AM is a scam on a massive scale. You dont need any more proof than to signup with a burner email - don't enter any information at all and within an hour you'll get two automated emails (confirmed in their source code release) from supposed women who are "expressing an interest" or "have sent you a message" with a teaser that then prompts you to sign up.

You will get a third email within a day - again, fake.

I'm guessing this is a typical scenario....

He gets bored or fantasizes about meeting someone who wants him. Internet porn get boring, but the thought of actually meeting someone is kind of thrilling. He's heard the ads, he thinks he can take a peak.

First step, just say who you want to meet. Second step, a few simple questions that arent very revealing. Whats the harm, right? It's like trolling craigslist looking at the old escort ads, not that he would actually call one.

Within an hour, two messages are received - no matter how little information you put in. "Melinda expressed interest in you....", "Chasity expressed interest in you....". Wow, he thinks; and suddenly that irrational thought kicks in - someone is interested in me.....

But to see what they said, you have to pay $49. Again, what's the harm? He's only going to read this, its not like he actually has time to get away with all these kids and the job taking up most of my time.

So, like running down to the corner store in another town in the old days to buy a porn magazine, he pays the $49 because its easy. And there's the scam - he's been roped in by a fictitious account that was programmed to send a couple random messages to new accounts to entice someone to pay.

Most guys probably jerk off, fantasizing about the woman they could have met and then go to bed. I would be willing to bet most men go no further than that.

Now those who get sucked in and spend hundreds (or more) of dollars. I have no idea whats going on in their head, but for the vast majority of guys, thats likely what happened.

Most of these guys are signed up on multiple dating sites, porn sites and escort sites and/or cheating on business trips. Also, most will claim "it was just once online and nothing happened" yet as soon as this simmers down will be back cheating and looking to cheat again.

To be fair, being on a subscription list does not definitively say that anything happened or what the specific motives for signing up were. But it's certainly a good conversation starter.

I find it interesting how many people chose to signup using their work computer. Here is a list of IP addresses and how they resolve to either .mil or .gov hosts. You get to connect that back to the originator. My favorite are the GSA and House of Representative users.

So here is a different take (perhaps) from someone on the list. I signed up a while back, I sent messages, I never met anyone.

My wife knows about this. Our relationship hit a low and we went to therapy and I told her all this. We are still going to therapy and hope to work it out, but who knows. So putting my name on this site (or any other) isn't going to hurt my wife any more than I already have.

But here is the rub... We have 2 kids, kids that thankfully are too young to be online in a meaningful way now, but will be in a few years. Should they or their friends find out that I screwed up by finding this site in a Google search a few years from now? I may have screwed up but should their friend's parents ostracize them because of my screw up?

I get that this info is out there, and taking it off of here does nothing to prevent the greater spread, but while there is much gleeful lighting of torches and sharpening of pitchforks, it would be nice if the mob considered that there are implications beyond just the people on the list and their SOs.

I know that this post comes off as, "won't you please think about the children" plea, and that I know that I should have thought about that before I signed up (although TBH thinking about my kids is why my wife and I are in therapy now) but it sure would be nice if potentially runining people's lives and relatinships with their entire families was not quite so easy or people took quite so much joy in it.

AM will not survive this. They will most definitely be sued out of existence. Whether FFU survives will be more interesting. At some point, our glorious admin has to get tired of all the legal action this site has been involved in over the past 12 months. It will be a sad day in Fairfax when Cary decides to cut this loose. The hackers who brought down Ashely Madison say they acted because the site defrauded would-be adulterous men by faking millions of female profiles. An exhaustive analysis performed by Gizmodo has confirmed this. They write:

Three data fields changed everything.

The first field, called mail_last_time, contained a timestamp indicating the last time a member checked the messages in their Ashley Madison inbox. If a person never checked their inbox, the field was blank. But even if they’d checked their messages only once, the field contained a date and time. About two-thirds of the men, or 20.2 million of them, had checked the messages in their accounts at least once.

But only 1,492 women had ever checked their messages. It was a serious anomaly. The pattern was reflected in another data field, too. This one, called chat_last_time contained the timestamp for the last time a member had struck up a conversation using the Ashley Madison chat system.

Roughly 11 million men had engaged in chat, but only 2400 women had. Overall, the picture is grim indeed. Out of 5.5 million female accounts, roughly zero percent had ever shown any kind of activity at all, after the day they were created.

The men’s accounts tell a story of lively engagement with the site, with over 20 million men hopefully looking at their inboxes, and over 10 million of them initiating chats.

The women’s accounts show so little activity that they might as well not be there.

People keep posting this, but it doesn't seem to be true. Posters pleading for additional zip codes, additional information on a name posted, some lame taunting/trolling, etc are keeping this thread going. It won't go away and when school starts in a week or so, it will get worse.

As to the people worried that their children or grandchildren in later years will see their behavior online and the kids and grandkids would be embarrassed, same is true for the court records. A child with a unique last name whose grandfather was caught selling drugs would also feel the same. Why are we suppose to enable cheaters to keep on cheating?

These cheaters cheated or attempted to cheat on the am site. The actual ones I have spoken to were on many dating sites. I wish these cheaters would own their behavior. It seems like they are only sorry they got caught, not sorry they cheated.

Selling drugs is illegal. Signing up for Ashley Madison is not illegal. And it's been well established that hardly anyone on AM ever cheated, and even if they did, cheating is not illegal either.

Cheating is clearly immoral in the eyes of many, but that is different from illegal. There are plenty of legal activities that are considered immoral by some (abortions, homosexuality, watching porn, owning a gun, spanking your child, living together before marriage, etc)

These are private matters that should be handled in private, because nobody is breaking any laws.

Pretty sure there is an appreciable and significant difference between committing a crime and what has happened here. Being on Ashley Madison (especially using a real name or credit card) was clearly a pretty stupid thing, but if we are going to start public shaming for stupidity without end, we are going to end up in some VERY bad places.

There is no shortage of stupid in this world... but we have very specific ways in which stupidity becomes criminality. Joining AM is not one of them.

If you are sitting around gleefully pointing fingers and searching for your neighbors... have you ever spoken or texted on a cell phone while driving? Then you probably actually broke a law. Have you every crossed a street against the light? Then you actually broke a law. Have you ever gunned it through a yellow, rolled a stop sign or driven faster than the speed limit? Then you broke the law, and potentially endangered other "innocent" lives.

To the NoVA wives who found their husbands on this list -

In my AMing days, I met several different types of husbands.

The bored: These men had plentiful sex at home. Their wives were attentive. They often were in long term marriages and just looking for novelty. They were dedicated to their family and their lives and serious about not looking for anyone else. They would be good candidates for open marriages because they didn't want to leave. If your husband was like this, yes people would judge him as being an "asshole" but he isn't going to leave you. I met some men who had women in different cities. They often didn't want an emotional affair and they compartmentalized easily at home. The most experienced would go "dark" during evening times so they could be fully present at night for their families. They weren't usually interested in emotional connections and were more interested in causal encounters.

The lonely: These men were most at risk for leaving their wives. I met several who had not been touched (literally touched platonically) by another human being in years and years. Look people, intimacy is a human NEED. Not just physical intimacy, but emotional intimacy as well. If your marriage doesn't have this, you bet that your spouse is out looking for it. It is cruel to condemn a spouse to a life without physical or emotional intimacy. These men were most often looking for emotional affairs. They wanted a great deal of communication, meeting often, and a "real" relationship. Many of these men I met and became platonic friends with eventually left their wives when they found intimacy again. Once you have it, it is so hard to live a life without it. Be very honest with yourself about your relationship. Do you nag a lot? Put your husband down? Refuse sex for years and years?

The dutiful: These men were a combination of the above but would not leave their wives or families until the children were out of school. They were miserable and unhappy, but dedicated to caretaking. Expect them to leave when the kids go to college. They oftentimes were looking for longterm love affairs or a series of casual encounters. One man I met and became friends with wanted a long-term affair but couldn't trust the women not to go crazy (he was well off and had a lot to lose) so he got a woman 20 years old to be his sugar baby and he kept a semi-casual longterm affair with another woman. He's waiting for his kids to grow up and then he's gone.

The point of all of this is that you need to understand your relationship dynamic. WHY was your husband interested? To get to the honest truth you have to open your ears and listen. Put your fear and insecurity aside and listen without judgment. Be very self-critical about how you behave in your marriage and understand their motivations.

For me? I was in the first category. In a 20 year marriage with kids and just wanting something different. I love my husband and never wanted to leave. The more successful a long term relationship, the more stability and the less passion you have. It is no crime to want to fall in love or feel the first blush of attraction again. We can never give that to our spouses in the same way after decades of being together. Never. But a new relationship can also never give our husband's the same comfort and security that we can. It's not a competition. Not really...(for most).

A story from the community ...

A couple was going through troubles ... both spouses "cheated" on the other ... they had a major confrontation a few years ago ... went to therapy ... and have been working on/building a better relationship ...

In two days, the wife received over 40 phone calls -- from friends, acquaintances she hadn't seen in years, strangers. There were harassment calls -- with cursing the evil adulterer. Their children have received calls and emails -- such as from mothers from that sports team they were on 10 years earlier.

Guys, be careful with this stuff. This is stolen property that is being shared. It does not matter what of kind of information it is. Any named person can have an invasion of privacy claim against people posting their name here. And it doesn't matter if you're hiding behind a screename-- as we are all aware by now, nothing you do on the internet is hidden and your identity will be discoverable ultimately. I wouldn't be surprised if the person who initially posted this information will ultimately be identified one way or another and there will be ramifications.
