Huh?????????????

Built in the 1960s, Massey, the existing headquarters, has outlived its useful life after first serving as the main government center until the 1990s. Its electrical system is overloaded, and the building suffers from recurring power outages. The heating and cooling system is so old that replacement parts often can't be found. And, the building is sheathed in asbestos, making it difficult, if not impossible, to make repairs.

It is more cost effective in the long run to build a new headquarters. Preliminary estimates for rehabbing Massey amounted to $87 million compared to an estimated $142 million for the new headquarters.

The new HQ will meet the fire and police departments' future needs. Massey can't be expanded to accommodate more staff in the future (PDF). However, the new building will meet these future space and staffing requirements.

$142-$87 = $55 million premium.

Aren't the vast majority of the fire and police departments in the field vs sitting in offices?

Yes, it's a lot of money. But what the hell - it's only taxpayer money, so the sky's the limit!

The Massey has 10 thousand sq. feet on each floor but take the lobby away with bathrooms utilities and stairs there's about 9000 sq feet and I have been told the floors are full of holes drilled as they moved walls around during the last 45 years for electric power access to the raceways built into the cement floor. All in all its way to expensive to rehab mainly because its a small high rise. And the asbestos is there too. After the police and fire leave they will probably use it for something like community services for people in jail, They should rent out some offices for lawyers or others who need a office near the courts at least till the place is total junk which it is not yet.

Wait a minute?? "asbestos" ?? Forget any ideas of renting to lawyers LOL

I like many used to stand in line at the Massey in May getting the county stickers way back when.

The new Public safety building will have much more space for Police and Fire . Yes its a lot of money, FXCO I guess has it for now. It will take care of Fairfax Co's public safety needs for at least the next 25 years and because of where they are building it, the building has to be pretty.

What would you want? An unfinished cement tower that belongs in East Germany??
LOL.. I can see where that's going...with the shooting of John Geer..and Masters before him.

We need a LOT more expensive police and fire administrators if we're going to bankrupt the county, and that means more space. So STFU and get back to work generating tax revenue for me, you peons!
