Question for any motorcycle riders
Posted by: Bark bark ()
Date: August 01, 2015 07:38PM

So I got my road test date coming up. Problem is, the DMV site doesn't have a list of locations that offer it, just locations that dont. It's kind of a pain in the ass to cross reference a list of locations with that list, so does anyone have an idea of a location that offers the road test? I live near the Fair Oaks location (which doesn't offer it) and am looking for a location close to that. Thanks

Did it in Leesburg.

Don't know if it's standard DMV procedure, but when I went on a Saturday I had to wait until they closed to take the test. It looked like they were waiting for 2 people to be available. Kinda bothered me to waste so much time...

If you take the approved motorcycle course, DMV waives the road test.

i already wrote them about it. they either dont answer or send a "fuck you" letter

the idios list DMV that DO NOT offer course, which is many, but not which DO - whcih is few - and it's fucking impossible to tell which do by seeing which done (unless you use unix - and feel like it's your job to do so for their dumb asses)

**** ANSWER ****

they don't have any close by you have to go to bumb fuck manassas or loudoun. their might be one in alex (too far, too traffic). but

NOTE: some DMV that say they do have it: say in other places they "no longer do - please see so and so school or NVCC"

also they are trying to force you to pay for local schools (which guess who offers: they do) to "avoid" the very low cost DMV site "skills tests". it's FRAUD.

FURTHERMORE, they aren't cops what the hell makes them qualified? they aren't - compared to say me.

--------------------------
however. THERE ARE allot of idiots who can't ride a bike who want to ride a BIG bike - so caution is deserved

some guy at work got a crotch rocket - said it was his first bike. i told him - hey they are really dangerous - ride only around the neigborhood a while until your very comfortabe.

NOT TWO DAYS later he was at work with a broken (arm or leg) in cast telling me he totaled his new crotch rocket

they really are dangerous. if you had one when your a kid and tend to take dangers and live and do your own repairs: you probably dont need lessons

if your a joker who sees bikes on tv and wants to do it: well do it but do it the right way: START WITH both A TRAIL BICYCLE and 12-speed. get to know them. or kiss your butt goodbye.

and don't by foreign bikes quick. look at the USA bikes. their's a reason why they aren't made like foreign bikes. be SURE to ask why. be sure to inquire how much PARTS cost too.

Quit your bitchin and take a motorcycle safety course. Totally worth the investment. Even though I rode a motorcycle in college, this course was great and taught a rider tons of useful and needed information.

The DMV website lists many providers: http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/#m_course.html

The Northern Virginia Community College course is great. Also -- you can stop by any motorcycle or Harley Davidson store and pick up info about motorcycle safety training courses. And yes this let's you skip the field driving test at Virginia DMV -- you just need to take the written DMV test to get the motorcycle endorsement on your regular driver's license.

I have been riding for over 20 years as a kid and inherited a bike from my Day and decided to just show up take the DMV road test. The tester put a few cones down and said to come to a complete stop with the front wheels right at the cone. I was a few inches away so he failed me immediately. I don't think they want to pass anyone without take the full safety class.

Trust me, I would love to be able to pay for one of those classes. Problem is, I work on a low end FCPS salary so my bike loans are already taking up all my funds -_- thanks for all the info guys

I took the safety course last summer at the ripe old age of 57. I hadn't ridden for 35 years and passed the coarse. I highly recommend it. It teaches you things that can save your life out there on the rode.

you think i'm crazy i've been reading before you thought about it

YES - MANY HAVE HAD SIMILIAR COMPLAINS

to resolve it they have to pay to take a course

which justifies exactly what i said and why

Try NVCC, they're reasonably priced, but tend to fill up quickly. Loudoun and Alexandria both offered Basic MSF the last time I checked.

BarkBark, Highly recommend the MSF course in Locust Grove, VA at Germanna Community College. http://www.germanna.edu/workforce/motorcycle-transportation/

It's a bit of a hike, but there's a few benefits:
- 2 day (Sat/Sun) course instead of a 3 day (Fri night, Sat/Sun) like most Nova classes
- a bit cheaper (this fluctuates based on local classes, but it is slightly cheaper than most at Nova CC, etc), although this may be off-set by the commute down there
- Not sold out - this is a huge problem with Nova classes, they're always filled

If you're tight on money, I still recommend the MSF course whether you're an experienced rider or brand new. It'll introduce you to basic clutch control, double-braking, sudden stops while coming out of a lean/turn, and a few other things that'll save your bacon or are good for a refresher. And MSF certification is required to drive on US Military Bases and will give you a bit of a discount off insurance, so it will eventually pay for itself.

I can't speak for the other courses in Nova, but at Germanna they will provide you with bikes and helmets, you just need shoes that cover the ankles, jeans, and riding gloves, at a minimum. Classes are 7-3, you'll want to bring a lunch, and the drive from 495 is about an hour. But I highly recommend this course, and I've had roommates and friends all pass through it and rate it just as highly.

Been riding for nearly 25 years, sounds like the licensing procedure has gotten progressively more difficult.

Anyways, when I ride, I have the mindset that some mind-numb fool who isn't paying attention, will take me out. Fortunately, only once in all my years, has anyone really come close. It was an elderly lady who could barely see over the dash, driving her Buick, and taking two lanes from an on ramp, over into mine. Nice.

When I got my license, I shoed up to the DMV (behind fairfax Chilis) and took the road test. Took all of 5 minutes. No scheduling, no appointments, no BS. Now it seems you need a letter from the Pope to make a time for this to happen. Good luck.

Ride safe. Your results may vary.

+1 on the above advice. GCC is a trip but worth the time and relatively small investment. The basic courses I'm familiar with all have bikes and helmets, just wear clothes as outlined above. The advanced courses are generally on your own bike.

Both are well worth it!
