New Smithsonian Museum on the Mall is 75% Complete

WASHINGTON — The National Museum of African American History and Culture won’t open its doors until 2016, but construction work on the building is nearly finished.

“It’s about 75 percent complete,” says Derek Ross, chief of construction for the Smithsonian.

“The outer metal facade, we’re 50 percent done with that,” he explains.
Construction began in February 2012. Cranes are now positioned around the site as workers put the finishing touches on the building.

“The folks that work for the museum are very excited about seeing the facade going up. That’s a big milestone,” Ross says.

The 400,000-square-foot museum sits on a five-acre piece of land between the Washington Monument and the National Museum of American History.

It's one ugly building ruining the view of Commerce and other buildings; an urban planning design embarrassment for sure.

It fucked the view of the Mall and the Wash. Monument from the NE too.

They should have closed HUD or Dept. of Education and built it there.

I agree that the exterior of the building is totally out of place along the Mall and it is too close to the Washington Monument.

It does suck as Mall museum. I like the stone work and this new Smithsonian doesn't cut it. It's fugly and out of place.

I have no problems with an African-American museum, but they could not have picked a worst placement.

From street level on Constitution and coming down the hills of 15th or 14th, it absolutely hijacks the view of the Washington Monument. The trees and the green lawn of the Mall are gone from the spot. Way too tall to be next to the monument.

I had the same complaint about the Air Force memorial and how it clashes with the Monument on the approach from 395.

Simplicity. Let good shit stand by itself.

Every time I drive by this towering eye sore I wonder why the hell they put it in the a spot that blocks the view of the moment. Terrible placement choice.

4 years to build? Sounds like they're on CPT.

How appropriate.

"African-American Culture"

Now that's a fucking oxymoron if ever there was one.

Few blacks in America have ever been to Africa and most couldn't even spell it let alone find it on a map.

What's more is that 99% of blacks constantly whine about how horribly racist this awful country is, yet none of them are willing to give up the welfare and move to Africa. Anyone who's been to Africa knows that blacks here are WAAAAAAY better off than in any other country in the world.

I for one am looking forward to the exhibits highlighting the roles of watermelon, fried chicken, malt liqour, MadDog20/20, and Thunderbird in black culture, as well as playing dice on the front steps, crack babies, ebola, AIDS, gangland shootings, welfare queens, rape, robbery, murder, drugs, and all the other blessings that black culture has bestowed upon America!

Just another example of nog culture - loud, obnoxious, and a blight.

The location seems forced and it should have been limited to one story, even if the spread had to be larger.

This reminds me of what wind turbines are doing to scenic areas, though it's a different form of blight in a different context.

I figure it will be 8 days after the grand opening that the first murder will happen in or around this new museum.

It was placed there so the Klan Memorial would overshadow it. People have erroneously thought for years that the giant obelisk was to honor the father of our country. Those of us who have gazed upon it at night, bathed in pure white light, with two red glowering eyes looking out from a pointed hood know better.
