Special Ed kid attending ESY
Posted by: Parent of 3 ()

Does anyone oversee the ESy program to make sure kids are getting their needs met as opposed to teaching everyone the same thing the same way?
My son is LD and his attend ESY this year. It's seem like ESY it's a joke. Son says he "I love it, we only about an hour of math and English and then is social time. Does anything happen in ESY ?

don't know what esy is, just sounds like the main goal for the school is to not let him disrupt normal kids

ESY = Extended School Year

It is for students receiving Special Education services that have major learning, intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities. In a nutshell, its purpose is to keep students engaged with basic academic review and social skills, so that they don't forget everything they've learned from the school year.

It is not babysitting, although some parents treat it that way.

Likewise...

It is not one-one one academic tutoring, although some parents treat it that way.

If the child is in an Elementary ESY program, the school day is only 3 hours long as it is. Many of the special needs students actually have 'social' goals in their IEP's - so that time is not necessarily wasted just because it's not Math or English.

Indeed... consider that the student is probably in a class of 8-10 others, all who have very very different IEP goals. The staff has to find a way to manage that. The point is to maintain and/or not regress... not to necessarily complete the goals

I've worked ESY for two years and if your child's IEP goals are what they should be i.e. only 3-4 academic goals then it doesn't take long to complete them. The problem is when classrooms have students with severe behaviors that derail staff from getting through other students' goals. I'm sure your son is perfectly fine.

Be thankful you have anything. I just saw my kid's elementary school yearbook and cannot believe that the school has 10 "Special Needs" classes of 7-10 kids and 3 teachers each. Between that and what the illegals suck, I can see why there's a budget "problem" in FCPS. You're welcome.

No reason to be thankful. It's Federal law. Deal with it. And by the way, "normal" kids don't always stay that way: some issues are diagnosed much later, sometimes bad things happen. Being smug is never a good idea.

Thanks! He has ADHD, and he passed all his sols, but his teachers wanted him to attend ESY Summer School. I guess he can have fun, I wasn't aware that it was just for him to work on his goals.

If he passed his SOL'S ESY is probably not appropriate for him. ESY is generally reserved for students working several years below grade level.

Not necessarily. See this analysis of multiple federal cases:

The kid passed his SOLs and is going to ESY because he has ADHD?!? ESY is supposed to be for extremely needy kids who regress a great deal over the summer or who are the lowest of the low. Sure, it's SPED, so you can find some case to justify a kid attending because he is a redhead born on a Tuesday. But don't gripe about FCPS spending huge amounts of money and then send a kid who passed all his SOL tests to ESY.

Every single year ESY has grown by a huge amount. Attendance has doubled and then doubled again. FCPS can't find enough people to work it. Normally it's a teacher and an aid for about 8 or 9 kids. This year it's the teacher only for 8 or 9 kids, with maybe a shared aid coming in for 30 minutes of the session.

Next year ask the teacher for a pile of worksheets to work on over the summer and spend 30 minutes a day doing them with your kid. The Fairfax County taxpayer will thank you.

You don't want to hear reality, but the truth is your little tard should have been thrown off a cliff at birth. Now, because of your selfishness, we all have to pay for your rotten crotchfruit.

ESY is definitely something that can be good for some students because it gives them another chance at the level of curriculum they just left. If you are seeing some struggle where your student is still not quite making it during ESY, then you may want to peak elsewhere outside of the schools to get help. I have friends that have used a local learning center and were able to see great results.

One specific had a 4th grader that was identified by the schools as testing behind and on a 1st grade level. ESY and the extra help in the classroom during the regular school year just wasn't enough. They got a full evaluation, individualized plan and enrolled him for a good bit of time beginning last November. I know they spent a lot of money, would have been hard for me to do it, but they absolutely loved the result. He's a different kid now and his only struggles in the classroom have nothing to do with him being behind. This year he is literally an A/B student.

I can find the name of the place if needed, but I know they were over near Artie's restaurant in Fairfax City.

Best of luck to you!
