I wonder if Alexandria City Schools are angry about this. I mean, the Wilson bridge isn't even in FCPS territory. Who does the school system think they are, holding a checkpoint in the City of Alexandria?

But the bridge is in Alexandria. WTF was fairfax doing there? What's next, CHiPs patrols? The Mounties? Get these interlopers out of Alexandria.

The bridge is in Maryland. Virginia, being cheap, ceded its colonial charter rights to the river (normally, boundaries divided rivers in half) so as to avoid the cost of building and maintaining bridges. The state line is actually the low water mark on the Virginia shoreline. You could have saved your self some typing and just said I495 goes across the bridge. Police do not do DWI checkpoints on I495.
Now maybe the schools do check grades on the interstate.

Actually it is a colonial hangover that has nothing to do with bridges. When Charles I gave Maryland to the Calvert family, he gave them control of the entire river. The reason for this was to allow the Calvert family to have sole control over and profit from the river resources. At the time the grant was made, Virginia settlements probably hadn't even reached the Potomac, so it caused no difficulties. After independence Virginia and Maryland altered the arrangement somewhat, but the Potomac is still the property of Maryland and DC.
