What the hell is Jostens? A company that sells stuff in schools to kids?
They sell rings, cap & gowns, yearbooks, and all that other graduation crap. They also have programming that assists schools with school culture, positive environment, etc.
Who decides on Jostens exclusive right to sell to a captive audience?
Ultimately the principal at each school decides which vendor to use. Schools sign annual contracts for each of those products. But depending on how the principal makes decisions, teachers or other people at the school have influence (the yearbook advisor for which yearbook company to use.) Mt Vernon has used Jostens for rings for a long time. They switched caps and gowns to Jostens from Balfour about two years ago. They have used Herff Jones for their yearbooks for five years (before they were with Walsworth). Most of the decisions are based on pricing, products, and the customer service from the sales reps. Most of the pricing is very similar in order for the companies to stay competitive, so a lot of the time it comes down to how the rep works in the schools.
Does Jostens have any competitors?
Dozens, but their big three competitors are Herff Jones, Walsworth, and Balfour. All three are used throughout FCPS. Jostens only has a monopoly on one school in the county: West Potomac.
Do these junkets to Florida influence decisions to award Jostens business?
Absolutely. Nothing's for free, but it's not like the four teachers who won jostens educator of the year award had to sign contracts in order to get their award. Renaissance is a jostens program that is technically "free," but its services are tiered, meaning the more jostens stuff you offer at your school, the more access your get to the renaissance material. The only school at the top tier in the couny is west potomac.
Any contractor who do s business with the fees knows the rules: oftentimes you can't even buy them a sandwich. And yet we have companies that prey on kids getting away with this.
Jostens job is of course to make money. They're a business. But the original accusation was that FCPS was using taxpayer dollars to pay for these lavish trips for teachers, which is not true.
Furthermore jostens is not getting paid from the school or district with fees (taxpayer dollars allocated to the school). Jostens' (or any vendor like them) contracts with the school only to be allowed to sell their products. The only money that goes to them is when a student buys a product from them.
yearbook programs, for example, do not receive any money from the activites offices to produce a yearbook. the only money a yearbook program receives to pay their bill to jostens or walsworth or whoever comes directly from ad sales and yearbook sales. If a school orders too many yearbooks but doesnt sell them all, the vendor is usually left holding the bag, but it balances out because schools like Chantilly sell 1500 yearbooks every year.
School and senior pictures work exactly the same, except FCPS has an exclusive contract with Lifetouch. FCPS doesn't pay lifetouch, but lifetouch gets to come in, take pictures of the kids, and sell them photo packages.
you want these companies out of your schools? Stop buying their class pictures and rings and yearbooks.
