If the example of Marie Lemmon is followed, FCPS will spend $100,000 for his defense. Karen Garza would be happy if all classes ceased and school consisted of nothing but football. That's what she tried to do in Lubbock, TX.

FCPS is willing to forego purchasing science books and have kids in trailers (with no bathrooms) to keep funding for football.

By the way, Oxford and Cambridge don't have football at all…not exactly bad schools either.

Oxford and Cambridge? Good one. I suppose at one point they had football, and then dropped it in order to not go to s***.

Now, you want to talk high schools?

FCPS has "gone to s***" because of football?

So that means that all the better public school systems across the country are that way because they either 1) never had football or 2) have dropped football in order to not go to *s***".

Now, back to the original idea that there are colleges in the US that have gone to s*** to KEEP their football...which ones, pray tell?

Oxford and Cambridge are in England, they never had football. They do have some sports, but the focus at both schools is education, not pep rallies and so on.

First, Mrs. Ed called and asked us to ask you to stop beating her dead husband on this "get rid of football" campaign that you're on.

Second, "Pep rallies" at FCPS (at least at the school I coach at) consist of 1 pep rally per fall for ALL the fall sports. And it's after school. Not exactly what you would call a drain on the academic calendar.

Third, take football away from a lot of the kids that are playing and their give a shit factor for all things school related goes through the floor. With no carrot to dangle, you're going to need a much bigger stick.

Fourth, UAB, the school cited in your link, has already changed it's collective mind and is bringing football back.

Proper schools, as opposed to "football factories" advise students not to end sentences with prepositions.

What % of the kids play football? How many are you reaching with this carrot? What do you do with the kids who respond to a different carrot?

Let's put it like this: MVHS never got rid of football, they hired the Flippen Group, and their test scores still suck. Show me, please, the benefit of football at MVHS.

Do a FOIA request, find out how many taxpayers are tired of paying for sports. Here's a hint, many County residents come from countries where they do not play football, basketball, and baseball. Just think about that.

Anyway, AJ Alexander is a criminal. He should be stripped of his scholarship and kicked out of school. What a wonderful example set by a football player.

You either got cut by your high school team, or the football players picked on you.

Have you tried counseling? Because that would be more beneficial to you than trying to convince ANYONE here that football should be cut from the school budget.

First, I went to school in a place where they did not play football (hint: not in the USA).

Second, the mere fact that you would suggest that football players would pick on someone says a lot (that is not good) about football players.

Third, people here don't make the decisions-FCPS does, and it is telling that cutting sports is the #1 item on the list.

If I'm honest, I learned more from football than I did from the classroom at my FCPS high school. Still graduated with a 3.9 GPA, but until the schools start educating students instead of trying to get the majority of them to pass a standardized test you're probably better off keeping football funded (among many other sports...no, cheerleading is not a sport...)

You must be a political novice. Sports is number one on the list to scare most of us tax payers into paying more - it is a red herring (you probably don't know what that means so look here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_herring for a good explanation.

More cuts at Gatehouse
Cut travel for Gatehouse
Eliminate instructional coaches
Eliminate AAP centers--do it in house
Eliminate FLES
Grandfather current immersion kids--eliminate the rest of the program
Grandfather current IB--make the switch to AP
Keep better tabs of the "itinerant" teachers--the ones that go from school to school--be sure they are seeing the kids as frequently as they are supposed to do so.

Some of the special needs programs can be cut back--not cut out

Look carefully at the book contracts. Make sure the teachers are really using the books and feel they need them. (Example: some textbooks are used very little in the lower grades)

Don't cut sports--but see where you can cut back. New uniforms are not important.

Why do we have to keep going over and over this. For sports FCPS pays for the following and NO more.

1) Coaches' salaries - called a stipend
2) Field/Gym maintenance including electricity
3) Transportation
4) Game Officials

Everything else i.e. uniforms, equipment, field gear, preseason tournaments etc. etc. etc. is paid for via fund raising and the proceeds from the gate - mostly football and basketball.

OK so how much do 1-4 cost? Is there some reason football etc. could not be completely self-supporting? From what I've read, upkeep on those turf fields is far from cheap!

There would be a mass exodus from the county if sports were cut. FCPS would be the only county in the U.S. without sports.

If they wouldn't change start times for school they could save $100 million. That is where they should first look. Get rid of that terrible idea.

Football can self-support at the majority of schools, and boy's basketball at a few. All other sports are net money losers. Title IX would come into play since it demands there must be an equal number of girl athletes - their sports are all big money losers.

This is bullshit. Football CLAIMS to be self supporting (though the figures keep going missing, typical FCPS), but everyone admits that the other sports are not.

So if you cut everything except football, that leaves the girls out, so you have problem there, especially if football is the "carrot" to make kids do well in school.

If you keep some other sports, FCPS just keeps going into the hole. That can't continue.

The answer seems to be a transition to sports clubs while continuing to cut travel and hiring consultants.

Virginia's very own George Allen, makes a big deal of coming from a "football family" and he's a racist, if not actually a member of the Ku Klux Klan. He displayed BOTH a Confederate flag and a noose. If there had been a sheet, there would have been no doubt.

Fairfax's very own Laurence Einuis, band coach (band exists because of football), convicted pedophile.

Jerry Sandusky, disgusting Penn State pedophile.

Joe Paterno, not a pedophile, but he covered up for Sandusky.

And yes, I know, Teddy Roosevelt liked football, but he was from a RICH family and never cared about what anything cost.
