Best Route From The DMV To OBX
Posted by: Transplanted To The DMV 2012 ()
Date: July 09, 2015 12:11PM

Leaving for OBX(Nags Head) the last week of July From the DMV(Centreville) area. We have family meeting us from Jersey, so we will be a caravan of SUVs.

4 SUVs to be exact. We want to avoid tolls and traffic back ups.

Looking for the best route from our meeting point here in the DMV to our vacation location on the OBX.

Sorry, in using the term 'The DMV' you have locked yourself out any response from those in the know. That term is so lame.

Hold on a second. He may have been a homeless vagrant living outside one of the many Department of Motor Vehicles offices in the area.

There are none. They all will be a mess if you hit them around primary travel times/days. They all will be a mess if there are accidents or other traffic tie ups. Which there always are. They'll be as good or bad as they always are during off-peak times. There are no secret routes. At least none that are very practical without going way out of the way. May save you some of the stop and go but will cost you in time or distance. And they're not guaranteed either since they aren't secrets or immune to traffic problems either.

Bottom line, pick the most direct route. Try to time it so that you avoid hitting problem spots and bottlenecks. That's the best you'll do. You can avoid the 168 toll by detouring and using 158 with some time penalty but not too bad as long as you don't hit it prime time.

If they want to shave their time from NJ, depending on where they are, they might look at taking the bay bridge (but there's a toll) and coming that route. From there, you can go the back way through Pungo which cuts out all of the Hampton Roads traffic but eventually you'll end up in the same traffic on 158. That doesn't make a lot of sense for you from here though since you'll have to go all the way to VA Beach to get there. Otherwise, you'll be most of the way there before you'd converge to meet up.

The main bottlenecks at busy times will be the few routes over the bridges getting in which you can't avoid without a big detour all the way around to come in from the Elizabeth City/Rocky Mount side.

Not sure how the DMV cameto pass. I knew back in the days it was DelMarVa

I'm hearing DMV being used by news outlets so its only a matter of time until it becomes mainstream...

95 to 64 is the most common route. anything else will take you inot shit-kick little towns, slow speeds, traffic lights, ect...

another optoin would be 95 to 17 to newport news and then back on 64

either way. be ready for traffic...

LOL. Four groups of idiots heading to OBX in their dopey SUVs during peak-travel season, trying to figure out the magic route that they can use to bypass everyone else.

Sorry dummy, but we're not telling you the magic route -- otherwise it would become too well-known and would no longer be magic. But, just so you know, it goes from NVA to OBX in under 170 miles.

Wrong, I have route that gets me to Nags Head in less than 4 hours and avoids 95 and tolls. But, since the OP used the term 'DMV', I'm going to have to withhold sharing. Sorry, but that's the way we roll here.

You think ~4 hours is impressive? Yawn. My ~170 mile route clocks in at under 3.5 hours.

Just say Centreville, instead of alienating yourself by first using a term people FROM here hate. If you're leaving from the DMV, route it on google maps from the DMV you're starting from. The locals in the OBX will hate you.

The closest you've been to the Outer Banks is by Googling it.

My pilot typically sets a heading of about 162. We then land two and a half miles offshore where my boat picks me up...

From Centreville you can get to I-95 by taking Braddock Road to Fairfax Co. Pkwy and get off on 123 and take it down to Occoquan and exit onto I-95

In Glen Allen get on I-295 then I-64 to I-664 in Hampton Roads, then to the Chesapeake Expressway to pay a $6 toll for a mile of a road. Take 158 in and across the Currituck Sound into Kitty Hawk and head due south towards Nags Head.

I have an EZ-Pass so I'll be zooming down I-95 in my dopey SUV on Sat. July 25 while I watch the peasants in the southbound lanes sit in Potomac Mills traffic. Lolz!

True that! Because OBX is for losers, as every thread about it here on FFU so clearly shows.

Nonetheless, the route exists, and I know people who use it and how long it takes. They're still losers like all the rest of the OBX crowd, but at least they spend less time driving. :-)

No f'ing way ... ever. The mileage you claim does not even work unless you are not in Fairfax County, at which point nobody cares.

The route is via Virginia Beach... You have an SUV... four wheel drive... can you figure the rest out?

Don't take 17. So many cops.

Really the only way is 95 to 64 to 158. Same roads everyone else uses.

95 to 64 is really the only way to go. Time it well and you should be fine as long as you're not out driving mid-day Saturday or leaving Centreville at 4pm on a weekday. Alexandrians have a nice alternative with going down Indian Head Hwy to 301 to 17, but gotta pay the $6 toll to get out of Maryland.

If you can, drive at night. I started doing it years ago and it totally changed my opinion of car trips. If you leave out by 10pm, you can get as far as Boston, Cleveland, Knoxville, or Charleston by daylight with a stop halfway. Perks are zero traffic, make terrific time, and optimal gas mileage. I usually get home from work and take a nap, while the wife makes sure the kids and herself are worn out and ready to conk out by 10. Explorer was pre-loaded the night before and then driving in total silence is magical. Rouse everyone up at 2am to piss and gas up, then knock out the last three hours. The Eisenhower interstate highway system is actually pretty interesting in the dead of night (having a CB radio is great entertainment) while cruising a constant ~75mph for four straight hours. But YMMV on coordinating an overnite drive to Nags Head with a convoy 4 SUVs.

He is planning on driving the beach from VA. Beach to the Outer Banks, but he forgot about the fence at the state line. So unless he plans on driving in the ocean, it's not going to happen.

Yeah, I realize that.

There are major problems with clueless's plan way before you get to the state line. Not even considering the overall distance.

Do you guys really not understand that Kilton is full of shit and just screwing with you?

About 2 hours total with all the ancillary activities.

I'll be having some fine single malt on the deck watching the ocean waves while you are still on 95 behind a contractor's van with a blown engine.

That fence is there to stop migratory elephants from destroying the habits along the beaches. So far, it's been 100% effective.

You had to do research on the Internet to confirm that he's pulling your chain?

And the nine miles of parks where no private vehicles are allowed with Federal and State Park Cops.

The OBX is way too popular and expensive for all the hassles of getting in and out. Sandbridge is much closer and has a great beach that costs 5 dollars a day for out of town folk. El Cheapo motel off the beach or my camp works great. And there loads of fishing on the boat there too in Va Beach/Chesapeake Bay Ocean or Bay.

4 grand a week and huge traffic jams and crowded restaurants "Such a Deal" ??

Hell 4 grand would buy a boat! Sail or power. Small boat and fun boat.

Uh, no. I said from the start that he, as always, is full of shit. As anyone with any sense knows.

I'm just playing along to encourage his own self-fail.

That crow distance is inaccurate.

Think I may know the route in question. It's a beauty, will have to measure the exact mileage next time.

No, it's not inaccurate. Pick any other you want. The result will be the same.

There is no magic route. Kilton's just a dumbass.

Kilton just played you hook, line and stinker. The dumbass(es) are the posters looking for a short cut. There are none in life or to the beach.
Don't forget Shark Week.
