WQQT got my FIOS TV Notice

And Cox was up and down late this afternoon when I needed it. I guess I'll call Cocks and ask them if they want to cut their price to keep me on for a while, otherwise adios.

we have had FiOS TV at one place since early spring when it was allowed in the county.

Cox did not even attempt to keep us as customers.

doing a line item comparison, we actually SAVE $2.00/mo.

BUT - we have:

}More channels - with stuff we ACTUALLY WANT TO WATCH!
}Long Distance - unlt. (Didn't have Long Dist. on the home phone before)
}Unltd. Local calling - had Message rate svc. before
}Lightning FAST speeds - Compared to the actual speed, or lack of, that Cox "gave us" we would never go back.

Cox kept saying it was the computer, not the connection - HA! Same computer, much faster. Only difference, FiOS digital signal.

My DSL elsewhere in the county was even faster than the "so called" Cox high speed -

When I was living in Fairfax I had Cox, and I understand and side with just about every single gripe anyone ever had with them.

Then I moved to Sterling and had to switch to Adelphia.

I never, ever though I would find myself wishing I had Cox Cable, but Adelphia is so horrid it wound up doing that to me.

They're supposedly being acquired by Comcast in this area, but that acquisition has been taking place for over a year now.

Damn my condo's inability to see the southwest sky. I'd be all over DirecTV...

Yeah it looks like I can get 5/2 (about twice as fast as what Cox tests at from my house), HD channels, etc for probably about $5 more a month after equipment fees than what I am paying Cox now. I hope install isn't too much of a bitch.

Got the FIOS yesterday! Took the installer about 2-3 hours total, as we got internet, TV and phone combined. I got the 5/2 service. I tested it last night using a few bandwidth testers online, and it appears that I have 4+ megs sustained down and 1.8 megs up! Nice! Beats that shitty DSL that kept crapping out on me.

come on gravis, you know linespeed is measured in bits, not bytes.

I would be EXTREMELY happy if I was talking megabytes.

Gravis, I think you were trying to make fun of me. However, there are 8 BITS in one BYTE. Get your terms right if you're going to make fun of me.

If you weren't making a poor attmept to make fun of me, please disregard the last 3 sentances.

While I do not doubt the speeds the "test" gave you are accurate, I do doubt the speeds are consistent.

When our cox modem would freeze up or "slow down" and we called cox, they always pointed to, "our computer."

With Fios, same computer - it is SO much faster! With the slowest Fios web speed bought @ 5Mbps, the realized speed is so much quicker in loading pages, etc. EVERYTHING IS FASTER than what was there before.

I have DSL from Verizon on another acct. and IT was (actually IS still) faster than the cox cable modem we had.

Also, re: Fios TV - the Sleuth channel is AWESOME! :-)

tech support will always point at your computer.

the only way for technical support to operate at an internet company, without bankrupting the company, is to blame your PC for everything, in order to reduce time spent troubleshooting. And with all the adware installing morons out there, it's not the worst strategy.

Well, I suppose that is easy - just not "good" customer service ;-)

There was / is no way a cable modem system can keep up with fiber optics to the home, which is what Fios is.

Even if it were the same cost, fios is the better choice.

For us, more tv stations, more bandwidth, and cheaper telephone services were the deal sealer - the 2 bucks a month in savings is just the icing on the cake (as if $2.00 really breaks / makes the bank).

Regards -

My brother has Cox cablemodem service. His old PC had a 3Com Etherlink III PCI card. (Yea, I think they made about 10 of them--as far as I can tell it was nothing more than a PCI version of the Etherlink III ISA card).

Anyhow, Cox changed his cablemodem (apparently they were upgrading and he had to get a new modem) and that's when the problems started. They kept telling him it was the PC but it had never had problems before until the modem was changed..

The problem was just terrible, slow performance.

I decided to try upgrading the network card drivers. My first clue came when I couldn't find any drivers for it on 3Com's site. As I recall I finally did find them, but they were no newer than the ones Windows came with.

Giving up on that, I decided to try using my laptop with the cablemodem. Lo and behold, all of the problems went away and it worked fine.

I told my brother I'd get him another network card, but he just ended up buying a $10 D-Link at Best Buy and it worked fine till he replaced that computer.

To this day I have no idea why changing the cablemodem would cause the network card to crap out like it did. Perhaps it had a duplex mismatch?

i meant that Cm was talking megabytes. i have a friend who has FIOS and says he gets a solid 5 megabytes. when he said 5MB i said, "you mean 5 megabits, right?" and he said, "no, 5 megaBYTES". i would like to see what Cm has to say. if he is only getting 5Mbs then he is getting screwed.

They don't even offer a service tier close to 5 Megabytes, so he's wrong.

I don't think I have every seen Cox do anything correct the first time. Expect that the third trip out they'll figure it out.
